Looking to continue your playing career into college...

Our typical recruit is someone who does well in the classroom, is a good person and wants the opportunity to play basketball as a college freshman without having to play behind juniors and seniors.  After two years at Avery Point, student-athletes have the choice to relocate to Storrs or to transfer to an NCAA school and play immediately.  Our campus offers many general education classes that almost every college student must take.  Credits earned at Avery Point are transferrable to other universities.

Pointers Defeat Westchester CC 65-52
The University of Connecticut at Avery Point Women's Basketball team went on the road to NJCAA Region 15 territory on Monday night and came back with a 65-52 win over host Westchester Community College. With the win, the Pointers move to 19-4 and the loss drops WCC to 12-10.

UCAP started out with an early lead, only to see WCC fight back and take 8-point lead with around ten minutes to play in the first-half. The Pointers were able to rally and produced a two-point (33-31) half-time lead.

The Pointers exploded out of the gates in the second-half as they outscored WCC 18-1 in the first nine minutes of the half. With a 51-32 lead, Avery Point coasted to the victory.

Leading the way for UCAP was guard Karen Manning scoring a team-high 13 points. Manning also dished out a game-high seven assists. Sophomore Kristen Woodring collected a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Woodring played well defensively blocking a game-high five shots.

Dean College Snaps UCAP Win Streak at Seven
Dean College got double-digit scoring from three players as they stopped the Pointers winning streak at seven on Saturday afternoon in Franklin, MA. Avery Point had their second 7-game winning streak of the season snapped as they fell 44-57 to the Bulldogs. With the loss, UCAP falls to 18-4 and Dean improves to 11-6.

The Pointers got a game-high 21 points from Karen Manning, but no other UCAP player reached double-figures in the loss. Avery Point started strong grabbing a quick seven point (9-2) lead only to have Dean hit a three-point field goal with 7:48 left in the first-half to take the lead for good.

UCAP battled back in the second-half to within one at 31-32, but after missing two free throws the Pointers went scoreless for over seven minutes. During that span, Dean reeled off 12 points and extended the lead. UCAP got the deficit down to nine, but could not get over the hump down the stretch.

Poor shooting has hampered the Pointers in their last two contests. UCAP shot 13 of 42 (31%) from 2-point range and 3 of 18 (17%) from 3-point range. The Pointers also struggled at the foul line making only 9 of 21 (43%) attempts. Coming into the game, Avery Point was shooting 41% from the floor and almost 64% from the foul line.

Manning also had a team-high four steals and collected six rebounds in the loss. Brianna Reilly produced a quality line scoring nine points, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds, blocking four shots, dishing out three assists and collecting three steals.

Kristen Woodring finished with seven points and seven rebounds and also had four blocked shots.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pointers were Kaitlyn Kozlowski (4), Sarah Paternostro (2), and Brittany Demers (1).

The Pointers hit the road again Monday evening as they travel to Valhalla, NY to take on Westchester Community College (12-9) in a NJCAA Division III inter-regional contest. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

The University of Connecticut at Avery Point Women's Basketball team defeated Massasoit CC, 86-58 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pointers improve to 17-3 as Massasoit drops to 10-4. The victory ties the program record for wins in a season set by last year's squad that finished 17-9. Along with the number of victories a couple other program records were rewritten in the victory.

Both teams started out the contest with some hot shooting from the outside which lead to a back and forth game for the first five minutes. UCAP then turned up the defensive pressure in the half-court and pulled away for a 45-27 advantage at the half.

The Pointers then used a 12-0 run to start the second-half to put the game out of reach for Massasoit. Four Pointers scored in double-figures in the victory. Natalie Smith lead the way with 17-points. For the third time this season, Smith has hit five 3-point field goals in a game. That number also ties the program record for 3-point field goals made in a single game. Smith also has 37 made 3-point field goals on the season which is a new school record.

Sarah Paternostro scored 16 points while hitting four 3-point shots in the win.

Point guard Karen Manning finished with a double-double scoring 14 points and adding a game-high 10 assists. Manning now has 90 assists on the year setting a new Pointer single-season mark. Manning also had five steals and now has 85 steals on the season setting a new school single-season record. Karen has also established a new single-season points record as she now has 324 points.

Kaitlyn Kozlowski added 12 points, while also grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Kristen Woodring scored eight points and collected five rebounds while blocking two shots.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New London, Conn. — There was little to get excited about for the UConn-Avery Point women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon and that was the only complaint the Pointers had.

Of course, when you win by 50, 103-53, as the Pointers did at home over Gateway Community College, there’s very little to complain or be disappointed about anyway.

It’s not like it wasn’t expected. The Pointers beat the Lions, 88-23, in their first meeting of the season in New Haven. That’s when Gateway had their entire roster available. The Lions came to Groton with just five of those players.

“I feel for them,” said UConn-Avery Point freshman Brianna Reilly, who had never played a team with just five players. “But our game is to push the ball and we’re not going to take any team lightly. Just because a team has five players, we still have to prepare ourselves for every game and, in order to do that, we have to play at our pace all of the time.”

It was a pace that the five Lions could hardly keep up with.

Reilly and 6-foot-2 center Kristen Woodring each scored six points in the first four minutes of the game to vault the Pointers to an 18-5 lead. Natalie Smith added her only two baskets of the game off fast-break opportunities to make it 22-5, and that’s when things got a little sloppy on the UConn-Avery Point side.

“We could have done better,” Reilly said. “Our defense wasn’t what it should have been.”

First-year coach Nate Stailey agreed as he saw the Lions (2-9) close the gap to 12 over the next five minutes.

“It’s really tough to keep that intensity because we’re starting to play teams for a second time, some of whom we have already beaten by 30 points,” Stailey said. “So, it’s hard to come into that kind of game and say we just can’t walk through.”

The little lapse in concentration didn’t last all that long. The Pointers scored 13 of the next 17 points to take a 41-20 lead. Stailey began to shuttle players in liberally, which helped reduce the lead to 16 at the half.

Gateway had another issue to deal with at halftime as center Rasheeda Green had to be evaluated after being extremely winded in the first half. She was allowed to continue, but picked up her fourth foul with 13 minutes to play. Somehow she managed not to pick up a fifth and the Lions weren’t forced to play short-handed.

The hosts took advantage of the fatigue to score the first 13 points of the second half and put away the game. The Pointers (15-3) went on to clear the century mark for the third time in the three-year history of the program.

“Looking at how the schedule was laid out, I thought we could be in this position,” Stailey said. “We actually had a pretty big win last weekend over Albany College, which is an NCAA Division-III school, so it’s nice to be sitting in a good spot.”

Five players finished in double figures for the Pointers, led by Woodring with 20, Reilly and point guard Karen Manning added 18 with Crista Peterson (17) and Sarah Paternastro (12) joining the double-digit parade.

Ladrea Moss was the offense for the Lions as the guard scored 19 first-half points and added 13 more in the second to finish with a game-high 32.

UCAP Defeats Quinsigamond CC 78-42

The Pointers started the second-half of the NJCAA Division III Region 21 conference play with a win over Qunisigamond CC in a Tuesday evening contest. With the win, UCAP improves to 14-3 and QCC drops to 3-12 on the season.

After a slow start, the Pointers built a 21-point halftime advantage (43-22) thanks in part to the outside shooting of Natalie Smith. Smith scored nine points in the first half coming off of three 3-point field goals. She then hit two more in the second half and finished with a game-high 18 points on the night.

Also hitting double-figures for the Pointers were Brianna Reilly (14), Karen Manning (12), and Kristen Woodring (12). Reilly pulled in a team-high nine rebounds and Manning dished out three assists.

All nine Pointers scored as Sarah Paternostro added six points and six rebounds. Kaitlyn Kozlowski and Crista Peterson each had five points, with Kozlowski contributing a team-high four assists and Peterson with six rebounds.

To finish up the scoring, Brittany Demers scored four points and Alyssa Blakley had two. Demers also added four rebounds, while Blakley grabbed five boards in the win.

The Pointers are currently riding a three-game winning streak and look to extend it as they host Gateway CC on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1:00 pm in Groton. In the first match-up with Gateway, UCAP won 88-23.

The win earned them a vote in the NJCAA national rankings.

UCONN Women's Basketball; It's Familiar, Yet Different Meet Those Who Make It That Way

The UCONN basketball uniforms are familiar, but something’s different. The women play a lot of the same style of run and gun basketball, but something’s different. They’ve beaten their opponents by 30 – 40 points or more, and have players ranked in several categories; but something’s different.

If you squint just right, the coach looks like a 20-something Gino, but something’s different. The crowds are just as passionate about their team; but their games are not sellouts…yet.

This is UCONN women’s basketball, but you happen to be on southeastern Long Island Sound near the mouth of the Thames River, not Gampel Pavilion or the XL center on the banks of the Connecticut River.

The University of Connecticut’s branch campus at Avery Point in Groton is the only satellite campus of UCONN that has a women’s basketball team. And while the program is only in its third year of existence, it briefly achieved a No. 10 national ranking in NJCAA Division III last year. The team also has several players in top categories nationwide.

“UCONN-Lite”

There are those that call this “UCONN-Lite”, but the games carry every bit the same intensity as their Division I counterpart upstate. The girls have out-pressed, out-shot, out-blocked and out-hustled every opponent they’ve faced. They have outscored other team by margins of 30, 40 and even 70+ points.

Being a Division III level school does not carry the same glamour, as Division I. Gyms are likely to have less than a couple of dozen spectators for home games. If you don’t count the players’ parents, who cheer on their daughters, attendance is even less, for now.

There are no bands, no Jonathan mascot, no crazed blue and white painted faces and bodies in the stands. But there is a growing intensity in the program.

Local papers carry many stories on that ‘other’ UCONN women’s team located over an hour’s drive away in their sports sections. But for now, it can be tough to just get a box score of the latest clobbering the UCONN Avery Point (UCAP) women bestowed upon their latest opponent listed in the local papers in their own backyard.

It almost seems like there is a sort of Rodney Dangerfield-like complex that they ‘get no respect’ from the media. But that’s not evident from the opponents they’ve played this year.

According to first year head coach Nate Stailey, "Our success this season will hinge on how fast our freshmen can adjust to the college game. If we can come together as a team and play at our pace, we should make a deep run into the playoffs." Stailey provided the following skinny on his young team:

Karen Manning – freshman from Bolton HS, Bolton, CT. Speedy point guard, who creates scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates.

Natalie Smith – freshman from Manchester HS, Manchester, CT: Deadly three-point shooter, who extends the defense.

Kaitlyn Kozlowski – freshman from Shelton HS, Shelton, CT: Excellent defender and passer, who gets out and runs on the break creating easy scoring opportunities.

Sarah Paternostro – freshman from Glastonbury HS, South Glastonbury, CT: Has the ability to hurt teams from the outside with the three and can also attack the basket. Also serves as back-up point guard.

Brittany Demers – freshman from Windsor HS, East Windsor, CT: Does all the little things that you can only see on the stat sheets, plays almost every position.

Brianna Reilly – freshman from Chariho Regional HS, Hopkinton, RI: Has post player size but draws the defense out to the wing with her guard skills. Has potential to be a dual threat with the ability to post up and shoot the three.

Alyssa Blakley – freshman from Bristol Eastern HS, Bristol, CT: Good post player; plays bigger than she is with excellent moves around the block.

Crista Peterson – sophomore from Morgan HS, Clinton, CT: Experienced post player with excellent offensive skills around the basket.

Kristen Woodring – sophomore from Mount Hope HS, Bristol, RI: Excels in the paint on both offensive and defensive ends. Woodring uses her 6’1” height to alter opponents’ shots and score from the block.

Nate Stailey enters his first season as head coach at Avery Point. Coach Stailey takes over a program in just its third season and looks to keep the program going in the right direction after a successful 2007-08 season in which Avery Point finished the year with a school record 17 victories and a NJCAA Division III ranking of 10th.

Roxbury Trips Up Avery Point, 73-54
Avery Point suffered its first loss of the season as host Roxbury C.C. pushed past the Pointers in the second half of Monday night's contest 73-54. Roxbury's Jasmine McNeal led all scorers with 22 points as she connected on a game-high three 3-point field goals.

UCAP was led by Freshmen Brianna Reilly and Karen Manning with 11 points apiece and sophomore Kristen Woodring's double-double (10 points, 13 rebounds), but it wasn't enough as the Pointers ran out of gas in the second half.

The Pointers found themselves trailing by 14 points numerous times in the first half, but were able to battle back and close the Roxbury halftime advantage to just two points (37-35). But UCAP was not able to keep pace with Roxbury, as a 9-0 run to start the second half pushed the deficit to 11 and the Pointers never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Both teams struggled offensively from the field, but Roxbury used offensive rebounding to get second chance opportunities, more importantly from the foul line as they made 15 more free throws then the Pointers.

Other scoring for Avery Point came from Sarah Paternostro with seven, Natalie Smith with six, Crista Peterson with five, and Kaitlyn Kozlowski and Alyssa Blakley added two points.

The Pointers (3-1) look to get back on track when they head to face Massasoit C.C. in Brockton, Mass. on Saturday, November 29 at 1:00 p.m.

Forced by the slow tempo of QCC, the Pointers had a difficult time running against the defense. UCAP was able to build a 16-point halftime lead as they got eleven points from the free throw line. In the second half Avery Point was able to speed up the pace of the game and pulled away for a 75-49 victory.

Paternostro's season-high 21 points led all scorers, as once again all UCAP players recorded at least four points.

The Pointers put together their first road win of the season with an 88-23 victory over host Gateway C.C. in New Haven, Conn. on Monday night. Freshman Sarah Paternostro recorded a game-high 21 points, with 14 coming in the second half.

Avery Point built a 22-point (37-15) lead to go into the half after a turnover plagued 20 minutes. Both teams played a sloppy first half as the Pointers had 13 turnovers and Gateway committed 28.

Guard Karen Manning was able to control the offense though, scoring 12 points in the first half and ended with 18 for the game. Manning also had eight steals, three assists, and four rebounds.

The Pointers responded in the second half, outscoring Gateway 51-8 on their way to an 88-23 win. Paternostro was key for UCAP in the second half as she scored 14 of her 21 points. She also had six steals, dished out a team-high five assists, and grabbed five rebounds.

Also scoring for the Pointers was Natalie Smith and Brittany Demers with seven points apiece, Kaitlyn Kozlowski with six, Brianna Reilly with four, and Alyssa Blakley with three. Both Smith and Demers had four assists, while Kozlowski added three steals. Reilly had a good floor night as she grabbed five rebounds, dished out five assists, and had four steals. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2007-08 WOMEN'S TEAM for another phenomenal season.

The Lady Pointers finished the season with a school record 17 wins.  UCAP defeated an NJCAA Division II school and also an NCAA Division III school during the season.  At the conclusion on the season, Avery Point also earned national recognition by becoming the tenth ranked team in the entire country.  Another highlight was a regional tournament appearance and an NHTI tap-off tournament championship.

2008-09 Team Preview

The Lady Pointers are gearing up for their third season and plan to build on the excitement of the first two.  The team returns two players from last year's 17-9 team that lost in the conference semi-finals.  Included in this group is Kristen Woodring, the team's leader in blocks and rebounds.

This year's team should be fast, strong and very consistent.  Scoring points should not be a problem because transition basketball will once again be a strength.  Newcomer Karen Manning (Bolton HS) has the speed and ability to be a tremendous point guard.  Sarah Paternostro (Glastonbury HS) will also help man the point guard position while also seeing time on the wing.  The rest of the wing players will be incoming players Brittany Demers (East Windsor HS), Kaitlyn Kozlowski (Shelton HS), and Natalie Smith (Manchester HS).  The freshmen are all strong defenders who can shoot, pass, and finish.

The forwards on the team with experience are Woodring, and Crista Peterson.  Both scored in double figures at least once as freshmen.  Incoming freshmen Brianna Reilly (Chariho HS) and Alyssa Blakley (Bristol Eastern HS) will also see significant minutes.  Both have good size and the ability to shoot from the outside.

The 2008-2009 schedule is very difficult.  The team has 26 games scheduled, with a mix of opponents from all over the New England region.  Most of the non-league games are against teams that finished at or very near the top of their respective leagues.  The fans who join us will see fast-paced and exciting basketball.
