G & W files for abandonment of the Tweetsie Line (Good News!)
Oct. 26, 2009, 4:00 PM - Good News! This just in from Rails-to-Trails in Washington:  On or about October 23, 2009, East Tennessee Railway Company filed an Environmental Report in anticipation of the abandonment of 10 miles of track in Tennessee, from Johnson City in Washington County to the City of Elizabethton in Carter County. Please note that the railroad has not yet filed this corridor for abandonment but indicates that it will do so on or after November 12, 2009. The report can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/ylb2csp. A map of the rail corridor location can be found in this report. It is extremely important that the commissioners of the city of Johnson City be contacted (see:http://www.johnsoncitytn.org/index.php?page=335) and that we communicate to them the need to acquire this rail property for a multi-use trail. We're closer than ever!  - Dan
