Frozen Ropes Tournament - Lansing

On February 29 the Tigers traveled to Lansing to play in the Frozen Ropes Dome tournament. Although small in field deminsions there was room for a nice size infield. Lots of interesting bounces off the dome walls for hits or pllays you just don't get in the outdoors.

After playing a new team from Northville and a couple of scrapy teams from Indiana the boys made there way into the finals. We saw this team play and they proved to be very talented. The Region Redbirds U11 didn't sneak up on us, but the boys have to admit they were not ready for the this group. The Region Redbirds came out on top 10-5. They had excellent pitching, great fielding and timely hitting. These buys can hold there own with anybody in U11 or U12. In fact it was only after the tournament we were able to do some research on this team and found out they are ranked 23rd in the country for U11's.

Our boys can be proud of the great effort all weekend. Our pitching was outstanding with contibutions from Craig, Josh, Lucas, Austin, Jalen, Grant and Miles. We really showed our depth on the mound which will serve us well this season. The hitting is hard to get a clear pitcher on with many of the hits bouncing off the dome making for some odd plays. We had several hits off the dome only to be thrown out at first or doubled off.

Fielding was the short coming with several errors in the championship game that allowed to score what proved to be the difference.

It was great to get some game situations in this early in the season. The Tigers are going back into the gym to work and get ready for the next tournament in March.

Genesee Fieldhouse Spring Swing - March 21st

Another Dome tournament and another winter storm. The last tournament in Lansing had the team traveling in some pretty nasty conditions. Thankfully nobody was injured and the vehicles involed in their accidents can be repaired or replaced. This time everbody was safe and no repair shops were involved. But there was plenty of white knuckle driving.

The fields were bigger with fences a little shorter (175-195 ft.) and games were limited to one hour in length. The tourny was well run and games went off on time. It was a nice experience and we would recommend it to everyone. Of course it's great to say that because we came home the champions.

The Tigers took care of business in the first two bracket games. The last bracket game was with the local team from Swartz Creek with the winner moving on to the finals. Coach wanted nothing less than five runs in the first inning and the boys went out and did that with outs to spare. They never looked back and moved on to meet another quality U11 team.

The Macomb Mudhens have been tearing up teams in their age group for years and often move up to get some good games. The Mudhens are ranked 15th in the country by the same group that has the Region Redbirds at 23rd. We knew it was going to be a battle. The boys went out with 3 runs in the first inning. Only to have the Mudhens put up 4 in the second. We came right back with another 3 in the 2nd and two more in the 4th. We came away with an 8-5 win. The championship game should have been played out to the full six innings but the management kept to their schedule and the time limit called the game in the bottom of the fourth.

The mistakes of the earlier tournament didn't come back and the team relied on great pitching, solid defense and aggressive baserunning to notch the first tournament win of the year.

Having palyed two quality teams in the U11 group and having 25% of our rostor at U11 shows the depth of teams coming out of this area for that age group. Now we can look forward to playing outdoors and facing some of the top teams in our age bracket.
