Swimmers Guide
http://www.swimmersguide.com
More information about more swimming pools in more places than on any other resource!
Swimmers Guide contains the only international, descriptive directory of publicly-accessible, full-size, year-round swimming pools available. There is no resource available in any format with as many pool listings or as much information about each pool as you'll find on this Web site.
Swimming Holes across the U.S.A.
Coos Canyon
Route 17, Rumford, Maine. Deeper than Freudian analysis and probably more therapeutic, Coos boasts gorgeous pale-green water and spectacular cliff jumping.
Falls of Lana
Route 53, Green Mountain National Forest near Middlebury, Vermont. A series of cascades on Sucker Brook. Above the main fall, the stream encounters a tall fin of rock that forces it down a long chute to a deep, 30-foot-wide pool.
Boquet River
Route 73, Adirondack State Park, Keene Valley, New York. Two excellent holes are located on either side of 73, eight miles south of Keene Valley. On the upstream side of the road is a user-friendly spot, easy to get into and out of. Immediately downstream is a steeper, deeper hole where the river enters a short flume.
Wakulla Springs
Route 267, Edward Ball State Park, Wakulla, Florida. Most people think Florida has two swimming holes, the gulf and the ocean. False. Hundreds of freshwater springs dot the northern half of the state. Among the best is Wakulla Springs, about 15 miles south of Tallahassee. Heavily supervised, thoughlifeguards with whistles and like that.
Blue Hole
U. S. 33, Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Dry River is anything but. Halfway between Harrisonburg and the West Virginia border is a complex of springs that help produce a deep hole under a couple of rocks that are begging you, just begging you, to take the eight-to-ten-foot leap.
Meadow Run
Route 381, Ohiopyle State Park, Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. The premier natural water slide east of the Mississippi. A rugged pair of cut-offs is definitely recommended.
Anvil Rock
Route 63, Alderson, West Virginia. Anvil Rock is named for a big ol' chunk of limestone on the banks of the Greenbrier River. If you want to blend in with the locals, bring a rack of Old Milwaukee and some cogent thoughts on deer hunting.
Ellison Creek
Route 87, Payson, Arizona. Also known as Cold Springs, this is a popular hole on a tributary to the Verde River. Among the half-dozen pools, the premier spot is at the base of a forty-foot fall. Check out the sunning rock at the bottom of the main pool.
Calf Creek Falls
Route 12, Calf Creek Recreation Area, Escalante, Utah. Swimming holes in the Utah desert? Sure. Outside Escalante is a 125-foot fall feeding a dead ringer for the lagoon on Gilligan's Island. Broad and fan shaped, the pool's best feature is a brilliant sand beach.
Washing Machine
Route 41, Sierra National Forest, Oakhurst, California. Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevadas, Washing Machine gets its name from a series of three smallish potholes connected by submerged passageways. The top pot is so deeply excavated that it almost has a roof.
Tish Tang
Route 96, Willow Creek, California. Here is a wide, flat, and featureless part of the Trinity Riverexcept for Prayer Rock, a 25-foot outcrop that native tribes used for ceremonies. Now it's an easily accessible diving board used by Humboldt County residents and visitors. The cobble-and-sand beach has been so compacted that you could drive a Corvette up to the shore and dive off the hood.
Rock Pool
Las Virgenes Road, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Los Angeles. Easy to get to and hard to forget, Malibu Creek spreads out just below a volcanic canyon into this fine piece of water more than 60 feet wide.
Douglas Creek
Route 28, Wenatchee, Washington. The Douglas Creek cuts through a canyon of mostly volcanic rock on its way to the Columbia River. Deep, round bowls lie stacked one after the other beside broad, smooth sunning ledges. Crowds can get rowdy, but the BLM (that's Bureau of Land Management, or, as the locals call it, Booze, Lust, and Marijuana) keeps things under control.
The Peanut in Lee's Summit
For this week's Brick workout, bring your biking shoes and running shoes, and for the social bring your dancing shoes!
From Shelter 14 at Longview Lake, take Raytown Road north to East 109th Street and turn right (east), go to View High Drive and turn right (south), go to S.W. 3rd Street and turn left (east), go to N.E. Main Street and turn left (north).
