Titans Baseball - Simply The Best!

Titans Bull Snortin
“"Victory or defeat is not determined at the moment of crisis, but rather in the long and unspectacular period of preparation"

*Hey, it's been more than 10yrs now, and we're still here...While others have come and gone, The Titans have survived and progressed as a team and elite baseball program. Let me say it one more time: "WE'RE STILL HERE!" ;)

The objective of this 2008 TITANS program remains exactly the same, that is to develop baseball skills and experience in talented athletes now ranging into college baseball. The method is still all about "hard work" and "focus," through informed and advanced training methods, while stressing academic education, leadership, team skills, and fellowship. We strive to give our players a strong foundation needed to play baseball at the high school level and beyond, and to develop a work ethic that transcends baseball and carries over into their adult lives. We give our time voluntarily in the hopes of providing additional opportunities and a quality program for serious baseball players.

As for our credentials; We're simply a very good team, won our share of tournaments and championships over the many years and gave anyone heck when we stepped on the field, home or away. As we continue to move forward in the game, Titans HS players are still out there and progressing forward. The recipe for success remains the same: Lots of hardwork and effort. We've always played anybody that can bring it, our age or older...Now our initial team are freshmen and sophomores in college and working their way into various line-ups. We are proud of their accomplishments no matter where they play.

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us..." Which is more specifically to say that situations do not control us. We control situations.

*Oh, and from time to time, you will notice our team name ending with the letter "Z." This is an endearing reminder to us, always of where we come from...At our core, we will always be the real "BOYZ," from Teaneck...

College Baseball - Titans Still on the Move!

Our Titans from our very first teams from years ago now are college players, some 2nd year and some 1st year players making their way. I believe all of them will be starters eventually and contribute greatly to their college clubs. Remember to check the college websites listed below to follow players and their developments. Titans are out there everywhere. ;)

*It also must be noted that the Don Bosco Prep HS Baseball team that was formerly coached last season by our Coach Leon Matthews, was recently selected as a Pre-Season #1 Team Nationally.  (Click link to read). That's quite an accomplishment and directly because of Coach Matthews' influence and development of that program. When you know things like; when he got there 4yrs ago and that team was a miserable 8-14, unable to make it into their own County or State Tournaments, then you know better of the gargantuan progress that Coach Matthews began and established there. In just 3+ years he turned that program completely around, winning 20+ games every season, back-to-back County Championships, about 20 players cited & recruited as D1 athletes, a couple of MLB Draftees under his watch, 2x #1 Team in  North Jersey, #2 in the State, Top 50 Nationally...And all that with the same exact players Bosco is now a 2008 Pre-Season #1 in the country...All of this done inside of 4yrs. Bosco has a great chance to be State Champions this season and we wish them well. But whatever they do, the Titans influence is permanently attached and ingrained, from players to coaches. And whether it's ever said or mentioned, be it known that Coach Matthews brought it all together and made it all happen. This #1 ranking is perhaps the only time in Don Bosco Prep history that one of their teams (any team) was so recognized, and definitely it's the first time for their baseball program. Great job Coach! ;)  Not many anywhere can make such a claim of excellence in such a short and interesting period of time, definitely not in the state of New Jersey.

All of that know-how, accomplishment and excellence is what went into and continues to be ingrained in Titans players, no matter where they play youth baseball, HS, college or the Pros.

-Go Titans!

We're Still Here...Titans Continue To Win!

1st Gold Medal

Just wanted to leave a holiday note that all the Titans are doing well. Many are working out and looking forward to their upcoming first seasons with their respective colleges and universities. I have seen some of them here and there and all of them have grown a bit. All are in good spirits and doing pretty well in school.

They tell me that the competition is good and they look forward to earning their spots out on the field. Many will be leaving in early February for the south to play and workout in the warmer climates. Many of them have also signed-up to play summer ball in some very good leagues on the east coast.

We're proud of all these boys as they have gone on to do exactly what we prepared them to do, to compete on the higher levels and excell. While some of the more original Titans (Brandon, Jaren and Jesse) continue the initial legacy of excellence, newer Titans continue to also achieve and succeed from their experiences with our team and program.

Again, we are proud of them all and invite you to keep track of them at their schools and on their teams. Many Titans are in their sophomore year, some are freshmen raring to go and others have just secured scholarships at more fine colleges to play baseball.

Finally, we didn't play ball this year simply because their were larger roads for our Titans to run and several of them continued on the trail with the elite DiamondJacks 18U team and represented the Northeast Region as champions invited to compete in the National Connie Mack World Series.  Nice way to leave their HS baseball careers, and all left HS ball as Champions in highschool and summer ball with loads of great successes.

So, the Titans are still very much in effect and still have younger divisions quickly moving forward. And the same tremendous guidance, expertise and leadership that took our older boyz so far in this game, is still a part of the experience in our Coach Matthews still out there doing what he does best - coach baseball. He's a proven winner and the result of all that is in the kind of ballplayers he continues to develop throughout the years. The loads of success speaks for itself on various levels of play. It is no secret that indeed Coach was our secret weapon.

It's been some ride in all this. There have been obstacles and successes, but we have never failed. We did exactly what we set out to do, become recognized & respected players and winners in baseball and in life. And we're continuing to do that in a big way. Just look around the HS and College baseball scene, Titans are everywhere. ;)

Of "Home-Grown" & "Homeruns" - Titans Continue To Win!

Titans LEAVE NO DOUBT
Bet you're wondering where we been lately...Our boyz have been out there playing the game and still working hard. Our aims are toward the next levels now and we're doing darn good out there all over the place.

The whole purpose of Titans Baseball, right from the beginning, was always to develop good ball players for the next level and to bring about good young men. We are doing that in a big way, as the seeds first placed by this team 10yrs ago bears fruit in all the younger division of Titans play. Many of our players play HS ball and are contributing starters. *But this post is to let you know and to keep you aware of the harvest this program puts forth, in the way of our kids continuing to succeed in the game as they move on. The next steps for some of the original Titans is blossoming right now.

Besides being heavily recruited by Division-1 colleges about the country, Jaren Matthews, Brandon Boykin and Jesse Santo have been invited to tryout and showcase for several pro teams in Major League Baseball. These selections make these Titans serious considerations for next year's draft. This summer, they have tried-out for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and the NY Yankees organizations. Along with being selected for several Top Prospect events, National Showcases & Tournaments, and have shown well in Pro Showcases put on by the MLB Scouting Bureau, East Coast Pro Showcase and the Area Code Games in California. *And I'd be remiss if I didn't say how very important it is for our Titans to participate in the "Super 17" and "Diamond Jacks" elite baseball programs, as it is the ultimate player development/showcase enviroment in this part of the country. Us Titans owe a debt of gratitude to the Jack Cust Baseball Academy, and we are grateful that they recognized our efforts and our ballplayers...Much repect. *Our final run with them led our boyz to 2 more Championships in winning the ACEBL Title and the Northeast Regional Title...Which led us all the way out to New Mexico as one of only 10 teams to make it in the USA, to compete in the top amatuer 18U National Tournament in the country, the "Connie Mack World Series." Our boyz started 1B, 2B and SS, and Brandon represented the team in the Homerun Hitting Contest out there and finished in 3rd Place. Not bad. ;)

I will try to keep you updated as to where our Titans land out in the greater baseball environments (And guyz let me know if I miss anybody here). We should be very proud of all our boyz, as they did the work out there for years and years and became some of the very best players around, not just because I say so, but clearly because of who picks them as some of the ripest fruit from the Garden State:

Rest In Peace - Coach Phil Apreda

Titans Torch of Honor
Today was a sad day for all of us Titans, Teaneck and friends of our beloved coach, Phil Apreda. In many ways, it was the toughest game we have ever had to be apart of.

Coach Phil was a true champion in so many ways, and he touched the lives hundreds of kids through baseball. Coach was the Manager of one of the younger Titans Baseball divisions...A team that he groomed to play competitively all across the United States, and they won. Recognized as one of the best teams in the country, Coach Phil brought together fine ballplayers to compete and win.

Coach Phil leaves behind three sons and a daughter, his lovely wife Theresa, his mom & dad, and other family and millions of friends. He was that sort of guy, always ready to help, guide and lead on the playing field and in life. He left us at just 44yrs. Old to a long bout with cancer. He fought well for a long time before leaving us early Tuesday morning, February 2/6.

We will miss our Coach Phil, one of the truly good guys I've known here or anywhere else. It was truly a testament of what he meant to people to see so many kids that he touched in the ways of baseball and sports come back to show respect and to say goodbye...Hundreds of kids that he taught the game. Tons of Titans and TSLL players from very young 9/10yr olds just starting out in the game to his players playing HS ball now and some even going on to play ball in college, maybe even the Pros someday. I know he's proud of every one of them as he always told them, "Play hard, or stay home!" And he meant that, every word of it but always with love and motivation for them to play hard and never quit in baseball or in life. He loved them all and they all loved him.

A personal recollection for me is when Coach selected a couple of 9yr. Old boys to play on his 10yr. Old TSLL District All-Star team. It wasn't a popular decision at the time, but he made it anyway. We had our own 9yr. Old All-Stars, but Phil wanted these boys and believed that they could play and contribute at the older level to help the team win. Not only did he play them, but he made them starters based upon their proven abilities. They won the LL District 6 Championship that season and then battled well into the Sectionals chasing the NJ LL 10yr. Old State Title. What I remember besides the great job Phil did with the team, is that he believed in these two younger boys enough to give them fair opportunity. From that time to now, these boys have always (and will always) refer to him respectfully and lovingly as "Coach Phil"...and so will I, and so will we all.

With much love and respect to Coach Phil and his family, we wish this true Titan and Champion our deepest sympathies, love and respect.

*And as a lasting tribute, this website (as now posted above) will be from this day forward, "Dedicated to the Memory of Titans Coach, Phil Apreda."

-Titans, FOREVER!

Titans, Here, There & Everywhere...

-Been playing some good baseball out there. Recently we played in the Blue Chip Prospects 18U Northeast Elite Showcase/Tournament, finishing 6-1 for and runner-ups in the championship. We defeated some good teams, but the best win was vs. the NJ Cardinals, 5-4. A team that put out on the field for them some stellar players in Roselle Catholic's Nick Nolan and Seton Hall Preps stud pitcher, Rick Porcello. They also had catching, former Titan Chris Kievit and a few other top players. It was good game that we played well and won. We went on to play against the Long Island Titans GOLD Team, a team primarily made-up of college players, and played them close through 6 innings, before they were able to put us away.

-We're playing well in the ACEBL, just winning another 2 games today, 7-2 & 6-0 vs. the Hot Corner Clippers from Central NJ.

-Also, our kids have been showing exceptionally well in Showcase/Tourny events, like SelectFest, and recently the World Wood Bat National Tournament in Georgia, which had 109 teams from across the country competing. We had 3 Titans down there on 2 different teams that made it into the Championship Rounds... The South Florida Bandits had Jaren and won their pool, while the Jack Cust Super 17 team, with Brandon and Jesse made it into the Elite 8, going 7-2 on the week, actually winning 3 of 4 games straight in one day. We're proud of all our boyz and how they represented themselves and played hard for their respective teams, NJ and Titans Baseball in this National Tournament. Great work!

Leon Mgr Titans 2002
7/9 - UPDATE - The Record, 6/28, North Jersey Sports section: Don Bosco Prep is named "Top Team" as it is recognized and finishes as the "#1 Team, All-North Jersey."

First, CONGRATULATIONS to our Head Coach, Leon Matthews as his Don Bosco Prep HS team finished 22-5 with a Bergen County Championship.

His Ironmen finished as a Top 10 team in the State and the best in Bergen County. In the Tournament, they put on an awesome offensive display with 14 homeruns and scoring 51 total runs. They broke and set several team and individual records in defeating Westwood 14-1 for the County Title...In the championship game, they hit 4 homers...4 homers by 3 Titans. ;) Bosco also won its NNJIL Div-C and the Overall NNJIL League Titles, along with it all culminating into a very big Bergen County Championship win *(And add to that - see Update above). Also to mention Titan's coach Matt Hill who is also the JV Coach for Don Bosco, went undefeated on the season and won their County Tourny-Invitational. And the Bosco Freshmen team also won the County Championship. Coach Matthew's Bosco Baseball program won it all top to bottom in Bergen/Northern NJ. Congrats to the coaches and the players for such an exceptional season and accomplishment. We're all very proud!

Second, the Titans had several players out there that were acknowledged for honors in from All-League to All-county to All-State. We are proud of all our boys, no matter the colors because in playing the best they can be, they show why Titans Baseball is one of the very best teams out there. Congrats to all you guyz...I'm proud of you.

Lastly, we just got back out there today in Travel Ball, in the tough ACEBL League. Feels great to be back together again. Been doing this for years now, and it's still just as much fun as the day we first started all this. The program has improved every year and now has different divisions of Titans. We're proud of all that, and where it leads to for the kids in the way of positive development as players and as young men. We defeated The Generals tonight 9-2 down in Highbridge, NJ to begin the trail. Well, here we go again. ;) Stay Tuned!

6/3 - We're Back...Titans Begin To Stir...

PIN Titans Red
Boy how time flies...:) It's been some HS baseball season, and the Titans did well out there on their respective teams. Most made it into the County and State Tournaments, some won their leagues and or divisions, others were amongst the County and States top teams. We also had All-County and All-League selections and honors. I'd say we had a great season with some good baseball played out there, and sometimes even against one another. :) Regardless of the colors worn, I was always proud to see Titans on any ballfield they were playing on, glad to see their recognitions and names always in the boxscores contributing, in articles and in honors of praise. Read something about every one of you, along with Titans past and present...Good job boyz!

Now it's time to begin coming back together as one. We'll be playing in the competitive ACEBL, amongst some other tournaments and challenge games. We actually have games already scheduled on our Calendar here, coming up soon. You'll be getting word soon-enough of when and where. Yet another season of Titans Baseball on its way. :)

2/25 - We're Ready - Bring On High School Baseball

Titans 5 Gears
Many are just getting out there, but we've never really stopped playing the game and working out in it. We played all winter in the Cust Academy Winter Baseball League down in Flemington, NJ. Great competition there and the best facility in the state. Titans played very well against the many teams from NJ and the Tri-State area. We even got the wonderful opportunity to play against the Super 17 '06 team. This team brings together some of the very best players in the state. Great hitting and pitching is what you're up against when you play these guys and they are deep with talent. Most of the players are All-State and All-County caliber, and many are ranked nationally and are D-1 recruits to a variety of fine colleges and universities. It was indeed a competitive pleasure to get the opportunity to play against such a great program and team. From the players to the coaches, to Jack Cust himself...And add to that all the MLB and college scouts in regular attendance, truly it was just a great experience. And we are most appreciative that we were given such an opportunity on a grand stage there at Cust Baseball Academy. What an honor!

Besides doing quite well in the Winter League at Cust, several of our kids were also selected to play in the "Super 17" program. There, they were given fine weekly workouts by some great coaches along with Jack Cust many times leading the way on the field. In a showcase environment, there would be games, and many times our boys were asked to play in other Super 17 games, even participation with the '06 team. These were wonderful recognitions of our team and our boyz' abilities. I am proud that they played so well, were mannerable and so honorably recognized. They worked very hard, as a drive to Cust Academy round-trip from up north regularly meant 120-170 miles, sometimes on late nights during school, then 2-7hrs of workouts or games, during the week and on weekends. All in-between that, they took part in various other workouts, hitting, conditioning, etc. Between Super 17 and Winter League play at Cust, some of these guyz played some 16-25 highly competitive games. I'm proud of them, proud of the way the Titans played and represented themselves in such a potent baseball environment.

Next stop - High School Baseball. Tryouts begin March 3 all over the state. Our boyz play on a variety of teams here and there. No doubt, these super workouts and experiences at Cust Academy have helped them in a major way to be the very best they can be. We look forward to continuing our good relationship in a such a great baseball experience. *And much respect and thanks to Jack Cust, Coach Keith Dilgard, Tom Gambino and all the many coaches that worked hard with our kids and all the kids there to make this one of the very best baseball experiences we've ever had.

12/31- Happy New Year & Here We Go Again - "2006"

Titans have been doing this for quite a while now...That is circling-up the horses and readying ourselves for battle on baseball fields anywhere we can get a game, against anybody. We recently finished-up another good season of Fall Ball at Cust Stadium in Flemington, NJ...and we look forward to continuing play there in their soon to start Winter Dome League. About 30 good teams gearing up for yet another HS baseball season just ahead. Titans have really never stopped working out and this New Year beginning is more like a continuation of things as usual. We not only played in the Cust, but also got a chance to go head-to-head with the powerful Farrah's Builders out on the trail. We had good games with them and look forward to even more topflite competition with them and a host of other good teams in our state and the tri-state area. It'll be spring-time soon and this is where it all starts. Titans are a darn good club and it's known out there well-enough.

For now we'll play together in the Cust Winter League at their great indoor facility in Flemington, NJ. *Also, several of our players have been selected to play in the elite "Super 17" Baseball Program, mentored directly by Jack Cust, Sr. The Super 17 brings together many of the best young HS ballplayers in the State to play on 1 of 6 teams from the 3 NJ regions - North, Central and South, where they can be seen by college and pro scouts in real game situations and workouts. The workout and exposure is great, amongst some of the very best talent around. Titans are honored to have been chosen to participate. So, we're talking maybe as many as 8-16 good games before the HS season even get's started. That's what the real work for the real players is all about, and everything else is just everything else. So, "Go Titans! ;)

So Titans are working out everywhere before we split up and go undercover for our individual HS teams. Look closely out there, as at any given time you could be watching a Titan in disquise. ;) Anyway, let's get this thing started right...first stop: Jack Cust Winter Dome League, 1st game(s) Saturday, January 7 in Flemington, NJ. I can't wait. Here we go again...;)

Welcome PacMan

Titans PLANE Ride
11/4 - 200 Miles in Search of Victory - Titans vs. Farrah's Builders

Titans Fightin Hard
Round 2 - 11/6 @ 12pm in Teaneck
Yeah, we're still out there doing it...How about you, what you doing??? ;)

Fall Ball is coming to an end, but sometimes the best is in the last few drops in the cup. Titans just recently went south (100 miles there and back) in a challenge game to play against one of the best new teams out there, the Farrah Builders. They have a tremendous amount of talent on their roster including the 1-2 pitching punch from State Champ, Seton Hall Prep, in Mike Ness and Rick Porcello. Both are excellent young hurlers and they showed it down in Eatontown on one of the last great days for baseball this season.

Farrah's is a good team, well coached and we went with them in this 9 inning game, through the first 5 innings without a score on either side. There were 3 unearned runs delivered for Farrah's as we booted a few in crucial situations and they eventually got the win, 3-0. They played tight and held serve and we blinked just a little. But in a game like this, you can't blink much at all. But we still played very well...well enough for Farrah's to recognize our ability on the field was real and not just talk like on a internet forum or chat room. ;) Like I always say, it's all about what you do out on the field - the way you walk it! Titans walk it pretty good. On this day, Farrah's walked it a bit better as they got the win. Congrats to them, good game!

A mutual respect between the teams was immediately developed from the game, a great game that was well-attended by fans and scouts alike watching two great teams go at it. I'm sure they admired the sportsmanship on both sides, as well as the coaching and fine play on the field. There were a lot of nice plays turned, that showed some real understanding of the game and ability to play it way beyond any 2-hit wonders out there in an average fall ball league near you. ;) Farrah's threw Ness, BJ Martin, and Porcello and we countered with Tim Hannes and Anthony Collazo...5 very good pitchers held the game almost completely still for 9 innings, while good defense on both sides made most of the plays in the field. There was little hitting in such a game, but shots got through here and there and opportunities were won and lost...That's baseball, darn good baseball on this fine day.

Titans have played their share of good baseball, from begining as a team some 10yrs. ago now, developing into a potent travel club and program, playing the best teams around, like the Thunderbirds, Twins, Yankees, Saints, Tri-County Arsenal, and now the Farrah Builders. This has been our fare for years now and our kids reflect all that good baseball in their play and abilities, in summer and fall ball and while laying it on the line in High School Baseball as well. This carries on into the many showcases and tournaments they take part in which leads to to scouts from D-1 schools and even the Pros asking about our kids. We have some early sign-ins seeing our players going to schools like LIU, Fordham Univ., and St. Johns, and there is much interest from other schools about the country in our players. I expect all our boys to be somewhere playing the game at the next level and playing it as well as anybody out there, home or away.

Much thanks and respect to the Farrah Builders for a great game and hospitality. Titans Baseball appreciates top level talent and top level sportsmanship from the coaches and players. That's what it's all about.

*And oh yeah, we're doing it again, as that's what good teams do when they recognize ability in one another - they want to play it again. So, we'll be hosting Farrahs this time around, this Sunday 11/6 at 12pm at Hawthorne Field in Teaneck. So, that makes it about 200 miles for us with Farrah's - this next 100 is on them...We've met defeat already, we now look to meet victory! It's supposed to be another great day for baseball. I'm sure this game, like the last game, will make it even better.

THOUGHTS Of T I T A N S...

Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington - CHAMPION
*Definition of "Titan": Ti*tan (n.)
One who is of colossal size, strength, or achievement.

"Leave No Doubt!"

--Denzel Washington,
*2001 Academy Award, Best Actor
Note: Denzel yelled this phrase, that we use as our team battle-cry, in the movie, "Remember The Titans."

**We also got our Team name, "TITANS" from the movie, and pattern our efforts behind its positive message that "Hard work + Focus = SUCCESS.

***Finally, most times you can hear Denzel here, from the movie soundtrack delivering the powerful message, that made his Titans Champions, and something to always Remember...

"The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in which direction we are moving."    --Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

"The winners in life think constantly in terms of I can, I will, and I am. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they can't do."
--Dennis Waitley

"I don't care how much talent you have or don't have. If you play the game intelligently, if you execute the fundamentals, you can win."
--Tony LaRussa

"Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill."    --Muhammad Ali

"Talent is God-given; be humble, Fame is man-given; be thankful, and Conceit is self-given; be careful." --John Wooden

"A true champion is someone who wants to make a difference, who never gives up, & who gives everything she has no matter what the circumstances are. A true champion works hard and never loses sight of their dreams"   --Dot Richardson

-A person is not finished when they are defeated, they are defeated when they quit.

-You don't always have to be in the lead... If you have the heart to come from behind. Don't give up hope, don't doubt yourself, And a new strength is what you'll find. The spirit of competition, the desire to succeed will always be important for life. So give your all, everything you've got, No matter the occasion, through pain and strife. So step up to the plate, enter the race, Never be afraid to take your turn. Because winners are people who just never quit, And this is a life lesson we all will learn.

"It's not the team with the best players,
it's the players with the best team."    --Authors Unknown

-There's no thrill in easy sailing
When the skies are clear and blue;

There's no joy in merely doing
Things which anyone can do.

But there is some satisfaction
That is mighty sweet to take

When you reach a destination
That you thought you'd never make.   --Spirella

“…I have ten hearts, a hundred arms, I need to fight whole armies all alone. I feel too strong to war with mere mortals --- BRING ME GIANTS! …”   --Cyrano de Bergerac

6/1 - Defining A CHAMPION...-Go Titans!

Titans Phoenix
"Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill."    --Muhammad Ali

This is a great thing the Champ said. In a nutshell, it's the secret to winning and losing. Don't misunderstand here, preparation is important and not to be taken lightly. It's what gets you ready to compete. But it's what's inside you that counts even more, and that thing doesn't lift weights, or benches 290lbs...it doesn't drink high energy shakes or run cross country...it has no need to pay hundreds of dollars for strenth lessons or run a fast 40. But it's the strongest thing inside you and with it, if you believe in it, you can do anything. That's what the Champ is talking about, that's what all champions use to be the best that they can be. It always comes down to YOU. Know you can do it, and it's done. Think you can't and that's done, too.

So, let's believe in ourselves because really no one out there is any better than us - No one! No one works harder or does more to be the best out there than us. Oh sure, you might not win them all but you'll get most of them if you keep a winning ATTITUDE about yourself and the team. So let's put it all together this season and make it happen in a big way. I only see victory...how about you?

So, as we again start anew, know that you're the best and you'll be the best. BELIEVE!

-Go Titans!
