GENTRY - Gentry and Farmington were involved in a pitcher's duel on Friday on the softball diamond, but it was the Lady Cardinals who fired the first and most resounding shot.
Lacey Kragel hit her seventh home run of the year in the first inning, which, combined with a stellar one-hit effort on the mound from Skyler Smith, propelled the Lady Cards to a key 2-0 win.
"Lacey picked up the big hit for us," Farmington coach Randy Osnes said. "I felt like Skyler [Smith ] pitched one of her better games of the year."
Katie Bowman was equally impressive for the Pioneers on the mound as Kragel's blast over the center-field fence was the lone hit the Cardinals could muster.
"It was definitely a pitcher's duel," Gentry coach Marian Killgore said. "My center fielder wasn't quite tall enough."
Farmington added an insurance run in its third. Kelly Helton walked and stole second and third. She gave the Lady Cardinals the extra run when she plated on Kragel's groundout to second base.
Control on the mound was the name of the game on both sides as each pitcher threw an abundance of batted ground balls.
Smith not only shined on the mound for Farmington (14-4, 4-0 ) but her defensive play stood out as well as she bounded off the hill for six of her team's eight ground-ball putouts.
"I thought she fielded her position really well," Osnes said of Smith. "We played pretty solidly defensively behind her."
Gentry (8-8, 2-1 ) mounted a scoring threat in its fifth inning as Chelsea Barker walked and Kelsey Duncan followed with a basehit after Smith had fanned the first two hitters. Smith got the putout as she induced the next batter to fly out to center.
Killgore said the thought crossed her mind to put Farmington's leading hitter on base in the early innings but thought better of it.
"It was awfully early in the game to walk Kragel," Killgore said of Kragel's first inning at-bat. "She's just a really tough out."
Farmington travels to Clarksville for non-conference action on Monday.

Titanium Elite Gold Welcomes Coach Bill Berry To The Coaching Staff
It was a good catch. Berry, 53, has thirty-years of coaching experience and has spent the last eight coaching fast-pitch at Lawton Mac and Bartlesville. His credentials at Mac were very impressive, including five conference titles and six trips to state in seven years and selection as Oklahoma's All State Coach of the Year in 2002. He guided Bartlesville to within one game of another trip to state last year.
He was an assistant coach for the 18U Tulsa Eagles Gold, a premier summer tournament team, is an instructor at both the Baylor University and the University of Oklahoma Softball Camps and teaches clinics and private lessons.Coach was an All-State pitcher at Ft. Cobb HS and All-Conference all four years at Cameron University. He has played for over twenty years on ASA Majors Fast-pitch teams across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
After building Mac into a fast-pitch power for seven years, he accepted a job at Bartlesville last year. His wife, Donna, an administrator for the BIA in Lawton, was to transfer north but plans fell through at the last minute.
Berry honored his contract, and has been living and working in Bartlesville and commuting to Lawton for the past year. When the Chickasha job opened up, it was a match made in heaven. He jumped at the opportunity to get back home and the athletic department jumped at the opportunity of getting a coach with such an impressive resume.
“I'm honored,” he told the group after the hiring was approved, “and glad to be here.
“What you'll see from this team is discipline, both on and off the field. They'll represent Chickasha well and you'll be proud of them on and off the field.
“They'll do whatever it takes to win a ball game and get the attitude that they won't back down from anyone.
“We'll play the best competition we can to get better and take it to the next level. I'm used to going to the state tournament and there's no reason why we can't keep going here. Thank you for the opportunity.”
