American Breakthrough in Race Walking
Bressanone/brixen - Despite being the best placed American in a Word Championships race walking event in a decade, Trevor Barron is not certain he wants to take on the responsibility of being the new face of the sport in the United States.
Minutes after placing fourth in the boys 10,000m final on Friday, 16-year-old Barron said he was “a little disappointed for fourth place,” but pointed out “it is the best place for an American since 1999.”
Regardless of what he might not want Barron’s name is in the books now after he set the new American Junior record when he clocked 42:22.79, breaking Ben Shorey’s 42:50.20 set in 2002.
Coming into the meet Barron’s best time was 43:36.38 set earlier this year.
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native has been race walking since he was introduced to the sport in 2002 after failing in several other disciplines.
He followed his older sister into track and while she had some success as a jumper/sprinter, he was not an immediate success and had to find another event.
Luckily he was introduced to race walking by a member of a local club and actually competed in his first meet the same day he was taught how to execute the moves.
He has also qualified for the Pan-American Juniors to be held in Trinidad and Tobago later this month but says after a long season he is not sure he would make the trip.
“It has been a long season” says the home schooled Barron, “I started training for race walking in late November.”

Race Walk Clinic in a Book goes to Press ! Tim's first ever book gets published.
 | | | | Race Walk Cliinic - in a Book COVER |
We have quite a bit of news to announce.
First, we have created a new web site www.racewalkclinic.com. It contains the information for Tim Seaman and Jeff Salvage’s Clinics of Excellence.
In addition, there is a free primer, on excellent race walking technique. This primer is being printed with the help of NARI (North American Race Walk Institute) and will be available for free to help promote race walking. We are printing 20,000 11 x 17 full color brochures that contain the same information as we have provided in our technique primer at www.racewalkclinic.com.
More information about how to get the flyer will be made available as soon as we receive them from the printer (approximately one week from now). In addition, Tim and myself are very proud to announce the publication of our new book, “Race Walk Clinic – in a Book.”
America’s premier team of clinicians Jeff Salvage and Tim Seaman’s Race Walk Clinic — in a Book beautifully illustrates textbook techniques while it catalogs typical mistakes race walkers make that can rob them of a legal race and speed. It explains why these problems exist and prescribes critical solutions to correct them. If you are ready to improve your race walking style and step up to the next level, then pick up Race Walk Clinic - in a Book today. Our approach in Race Walk Clinic — in a Book is to pick up where other training materials leave off. We start by grounding our discussion with a review of correct race walking technique, but do not focus on the many aspects of technique that you can do incorrectly. We then divide race walking technique problems into broad categories, starting with issues of legality and then separating technique issues into categories such as hip, leg, arm, and posture problems. For each category we illustrate the problem with photographs of either elite race walkers or (for beginner problems) staged images. We then offer remediation in two forms: exercises, drills, and stretches to improve your style, and mental cues to guide your focus while race walking. Within the educational material presented, we’ve interspersed “Tales from the Track,” a unique collection of unique stories in which great race walkers from the U.S. and around the world retell some of their most memorable experiences.
The book is available for pre-order at www.racewalkclinic.com and www.racewalk.com.
It should ship within two weeks.
Finally, we have added a new clinic to our schedule, July 25th and 26th in Orlando Florida. Please check www.racewalkclinic.com for details. Also, please note, that our Albany clinic, in conjunction with the 10K Nationals, still have quite a bit of space available. We people have signed up for the race to date, let’s all have a good showing for Don who is an adamant race walk supporter.

Mt. Sac Relays - BARRON breaks US. Jr. 5km record !!!
On Sunday April 5th, Tim, Rachel and Trevor traveled up to Mt. Sac to compete in their annual race walk event. Since both Tim and Trevor had raced the previous weekend, it was decided that they would do a 5km together so that Trevor could make an assualt or attempt at the US Jr. 5km record held by Ben Shorey. Ben's US Jr. Record time was 20:57. Not an easy time to hit for a 16 year old, but after his 44:26 performance the week before, Coach Tim though that Trevor was ready. The duo started off the first km at 4:12, slightly off pace, but enough to keep it within striking distance. The next km was down to 4:07, 4:10( for a 3km time of 12:30). From 3km to 4km they walked 4:11, and Trevor's "final" km he walked 4:09 to walk an amazing 20:53.25, breaking the record by 4 seconds.
Since the race was a 10km race, Trevor still had to complete the distance in order for the time to count, so he strolled the next 12.5 laps and finished in 51 minutes, winning the junior race.
Tim, meanwhile, lost a bit of focus because he was so happy with Trevor's race that he slowed down after Trevor stopped, but he still mananged to walk 42:49, the fastest 10km in the US in two years.
Just a few short minutes later, Tim jumped into the 5km to help Rachel in her first hard workout/race since coming down from altitude. Rachel walked a solid 23:36. Next up for Rachel will be a 20km race in Germany on April 25th.
For Tim and Trevor, it will be America's Race Walk Championship in El Salvador on Friday May 1st.
In other news, Chris Tegtmeier will be competing at the Penn Relays, where he walked his first and only 10km race of his career a few years ago. In the women's race, Lauren Forgues will be making her debut after 8 months off of training recovering form knee surgery.
Best of luck to the TEAM!

The kids race after the 20km
 | | | | Tim leading the way with the kids |
Almost 50 kids competed in a 1500m race after the 20km races were finished. Although Tim was tired, the kids that he was walking with placed 2nd in both of the two heats. That means that Tim placed 2nd three times that day!! :) First Patrick beat him, and then 14-year old Molly Josephs from Long Island beat him!
More importantly, the kids had a lot of fun. Full results are available at www.eteams.com/stwc

Click the above link to see a video of the race in Pharr, Texas. Tim placed 2nd in a time of 1:28:04 to qualify for the America's Race walk Championships in El Salvador on May 1st and 2nd.
The race was almost 4 minutes faster than Tim walked last season after his surgery.
Also, Trevor walked his way to a huge PR in a time of 44:26 for 10km. Trevor qualified for the race in El Salvador and also for the World Youth Championships in Italy in July.

Training in Flagstaff
We have now been here in Flagstaff for almost 3 weeks. Trevor and I have less than a week to go, while Rachel and Lauren have about 10 days to go. The Plaetzer and Tysse family left yesterday for Norway, while Sabine and Bastian are here for another 3 days.
Training has been going very well. Over 140km the past two weeks and Rachel has had almost the same. Lauren's training has been progressing nicely, and Trevor is ready to rock and roll next weekend in Texas.
Here is a great picture of me training with Kjersti, Sabine and Trevor on our 2.5km course. This could be the last picture that I ever have of Kjersti and I racewalking together because she has already announced her retirement after the end of the season.

Seaman places fifth, Eastler heads to Beijing
In what was probably his last Olympic Trials appearance of his career, Tim Seaman placed fifth in a time of 1:31:35. Kevin Eastler did a superb job of winning the race in a time of 1:27:07, to walk his way onto his second Olympic Team. Tim started the race right where he thought he would be, but had some technical issues and was forced to slow just after 10km. Tim did not want to end his Olympic Trials career with a disqualification and he realizes it was a success just to be able to participate after his hip surgery last October when his family was told that Tim would never be able to racewalk again. Tim didn't find out about this information until March and it was the flame that lit his internal torch in his quest for a third Olympic Team these past few months. It was the first time since 1995 that Tim has finished out of the top-3 places at the National 20km Championship. Two steps forward, one step back
Training in Norway with Kjersti was a big step forward, but the race in Spain was a small step back. I was able to do a lot of quality training, but during the race, I had some pain in my hip and I didn't want to take a change with pushing through it. I know that I have to do well at the Olympic Trials. La Coruna had very mixed results. Either you did very well or you did very poorly. It was very much unlike last year, where it took a sub 1:23:00 time to get into the top 12. This year, that same place was over 1:30:00. There were 8 men disqualified and 8 who did not finish. Those are incredibly high numbers. The Rocket was suberb in winning his second Challenge race of the year. Kjersti was very smart as she won her fourth Challenge this season. Seaman arrives in Eugene
For the first time in 7 months, Tim Seaman will be toeing the line in a racewalk competition. It is not for lack of trying for the 2-time Olympian, as he has battled back from the biggest hurdle of his career. In October, Tim has major hip surgery to correct a tear in his labrum and as part of the surgery they had to shave down part of the femur (the leg bone). After the surgery Tim was told that the surgery was more complicated than expected, but the surgeon told Tim's dad a different story. Tim's dad was told that it would be highly unlikely that Tim would ever racewalk again.
Tim is determined to prove the doctor wrong as he lines up tomorrow morning on the 1km course outside of Autzen Stadium. The course is a 500m out and 500m back flat asphalt loop with almost no incline.
The weather is expected to be cold and snowy, but Tim has faced far worse in his career. While Tim has not walked 20km in training yet this season, his goal is simple: To finish the 20km race. If he is able to do that, he will finish with a huge smile on his face.
This will be a great step forward towards his goals for this season.

Tim seems as frustrated with the lack of support from Athletics Canada as Tim Seaman is with the US Racewalking Committee's Chairman Vince Peters, USA Track and Field and the US Olympic Committee's complete lack of assistance in helping Tim qualify for his third Olympic Team.

Road to Beijing has some road blocks in it
Copied with permission from WALK! Magazine. Tim Seaman’s road to the Olympics has never been easy. Tim is one of those guys who as Rob Cole once said, “If it wasn’t for bad luck Tim, you would have no luck.” It was true before Tim qualified for his first Olympic Team in 2000 and it is true now as Tim tries to qualify for his third and last Olympic Team. Sometime after Tim returned from the Pan-Am Cup in Brazil, Tim noticed that he was having some pain in his right adductor when he was warming up and when he turned around. He didn’t think much of it and in fact went on to walk his second fastest time ever at the IAAF Grand Prix in LaCoruna, Spain in May. After that though, things got progressively worse. Tim was unable to do speedwork before the Outdoor National Championships in Indianapolis and then decided to skip the Pan-Am Games in July so that he could try and “rest” it, while still training for the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan. While in Japan, Tim finally had the opportunity for an athletic trainer to look at him and the prognosis was not good news…..They had no clue what was wrong with him. Upon his return from Japan, Tim put his full focus on finding out what was wrong. The first doctor took an MRI and it said that he had osteoarthritis and the doctor told him to just “not train as much as he did before.” That answer wasn’t acceptable to Tim, so he found another doctor who thought that it could be something else more complicated. So, Tim took another MRI. This one said that Tim had a torn Labrum inside his hip joint. The doctor said that it was not something that he would recommend that Tim did before the Olympics because it was a very big surgery but the problem was that Tim was unable at that point to run or walk for 2 minutes without massive pain. Tim returned to Long Island to visit his family and had an appt with a specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. The doctor advised Tim that he had a femoral acetabular impingement and that was causing the Labrum to tear as well as the adductor longus muscle. He said that he would not recommend that Tim had the surgery before the Olympics provided that Tim was able to continue to train. Since Tim wasn’t able to train at all, the decision was made to have surgery. Three days later on Thursday October 25th, at 6am in the morning Tim had surgery to correct the problem. Dr. Coleman went in and shaved down a portion of the femur bone that was impinging the movement of the leg and he trimmed away that portion of the labrum that was torn. He also had to remove some cartilage that was torn. Ten days after the surgery Tim met the doctor again for his post-op checkup. He only had to use crutches for the first week, so he hobbled into the office on the upper east side of Manhattan. He took a seat on the tall chairs in the lobby that are specially made for hip-replacement patients and waited for his name to be called. The nurse came out and took Tim into the room to remove the sutures. A few minutes later, Dr. Coleman came in and showed Tim the pictures from the surgery. He said that things were worse inside than he had thought and that he couldn’t guarantee that Tim would be 100% because of the missing cartilage. He said that Tim couldn’t run or racewalk for 6 weeks and during that time he could start to do some easy rehab. Currently Tim is awaiting the six weeks to finish so that he can see if the surgery was a success or not. He had originally planned on being in Germany at a training camp with his Team Plaetzer teammates at the end of November though the middle of December but that had to be cancelled. Many things were planned in his preparation to qualify for his third Olympic Team, but now the only focus is being able to pain free.

Marion Jones admits to Steroid use
Normally things like this do not appear on TimSeaman.com because it hurts the entire sport of track and field, but this is just unbelievable. Marion was a superstar, a role model, a hero for kids across the country because of the incredible performances that she put forth at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. She was one of the prized athletes of the United States Olympic Committee because of her feats on the track and she was a centerpiece of all highlight videos from the 2000 Olympic Games because of her great attitude and superb performaces.
Now, she is a disgraced athlete and her name name should be wiped clean from the minds of every American.

3's a charm for Perez in 20km walk - by Elliott Denman
Sunday, August 26
Perez gets hat-trick
Perez gets a hat-trick Today at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan there were three things that were hot: Jefferson Perez, the weather and the jury of appeals. First, Jefferson Perez, the reigning World Champion won his third consecutive World Championship Title. A feat matched by no other racewalker in the history of the event. Jefferson walked one of the toughest races of his career. The sweltering heat, Jefferson’s “biggest concern” before and during the race, made the going very tough for all of the competitors. The race started off at 8am sharp with temperatures already at 91 degrees. Tim Seaman and Kevin Eastler’s race plan was to start off at around 4:30 pace per kilometer and pick it up after 10km. Unfortunately, only Kevin was able to keep to the plan as he walked 44:50 for his first 10km and he was able to come back in around 43:40 for his 2nd 10km. Tim meanwhile struggled today. Eastler and Seaman walked together through 8km but soon after that the conditions got to Tim and he slowed a bit. By 12km Kevin had two sub 1:19:00 guys from China in his sights and he passed both of them. Tim was behind them by about 50 seconds and did his best to catch them, but today wasn’t his day. Third was the decision by the Jury of Appeals. In racewalking the Chief Judge has the ability to disqualify an athlete the last 100m if he/she feels that an athlete has broken the rules in a blatant way. With less than 40 meters to go, Francisco Fernandez from Spain passed Hatem Guala from Tunisa and the Chief Judge disqualified him for, what he saw, as a blatant violation of the rules. On appeal, the Jury of Appeals reinstated the disqualified Fernandez and thus moved everyone back one position.
In the end, Tim ended up placing 31st in a time of 1:33:58 and Kevin was 28th in a time of 1:28:29 but their Team Plaetzer Teammate, Erik "the Rocket" Tysse, placed 8th, scoring him the highest place ever for Team Plaetzer at the World Championships.

Pre-race update
Last night we had our first and only full team meeting. All 100+ athletes from the US delegation were there and it was a pretty amazing and inspirational meeting. Adam Nelson got up and read a poem (that he wrote??) entitled "Don't give up." It was for sure one of the best that I have heard in a long time. Then, Craig Masback, the CEO of USATF got up and reminded us that we are the Worlds # 1 Track and Field Team! WOW! We also elected a Flag-Bearer (Dwight Philips) and a Captain (Reese Hoffa). Reese is a teammate of mine with the NYAC so it was with great pleasure that I voted for him.
I have to say that it is truly an honor and a pleasure to be here representing my country. I have worked hard all season, but I know that there is still a lot of very hard work to be done before I can make my third Olympic Team in Beijing. Kevin and I have a good race plan for tomorrow, one that we hope will give us the best chance to do well.
The marathon was today and it seemed as if the athletes were about 8 - 15 minutes off of their best times or their season bests. That gave us a good indication on what we can expect.
Our race goes off at 8am tomorrow morning, which is about 7pm in New York and 4pm in San Diego.
More updates after the race....

Update from Japan
First update:
We have been in Japan for about 5 days now. We were at the USATF's pre-camp about an hour outside of Osaka in a great hotel. Kevin and I are roommates and the hotel was amazing. It was by far one of the best hotels that either of us have ever stayed at. The bad part though was the fact that the weather here in Osaka has been by far the worst that we have ever been in. By 7am in the morning it is almost 95 degrees and with the humidity it feels like it is 105 degrees.
We are now at the hotel in Osaka. In the hotel it is just us and the Canadian Team. There are security guards all over the place and when we get off the elevator at our hotel, we have to show them our credential to be able to walk to our room.
This morning we had our last hard workout. We did 8 x 1km and we were lucky that we found a course right by the river. It was pretty cool becuase Deana's husband Andrew came to help us with our drinks and Alan Webb ran with us while we were warming up to the course.
OK, more updates later.....

Eastler, Seaman go 1,2 in Indy, Moore qualifies for Brazil
Tim Seaman and Kevin Eastler had as their main goal going into the USA Track and Field's Outdoor Nationals in Indianapolis last weekend to place first and second. Who would cross the line first would be up to them, their Coach Stephan Plaetzer stated, since the two are teammates and training partners. The race was scheduled to start at 6:30am. The due woke up at 3:45am, but coming from the west coast that meant they were waking up at 12:45am and competing at 3:30am according to their body time. Something that they, nor the other competitors in the field ever do.
The gun went off at Tim and Kevin walked 4:18 for the first kilometer with Matt Boyles from Ohio walking stride for stride with them. They stayed together until about 8km when Matt unfortunately picked up his 2nd red card. Matt was forced to slow down and make sure that he really focused on technique. Meanwhile, Tim and Kevin just kept clicking off even splits on the uphill/downhill course outside of the IUPUI stadium. At 9km Tim received a red card on the board for the first time all morning. By 14km though, Tim's 2nd card went up on the board and he looked at Kevin and said, "I guess someone else is going to decide our fate today, see you at the finish." Tim slowed because with a trip to Brazil, Japan and his health insurance on the line, there was no way that Tim could risk getting disqualified.
Kevin went on to walk to an easy win in a time of 1:26:42, while Tim had to coast to the finish in a time of 1:28:17. Matt Boyles was third in a time of 1:28:40. Next up was John Nunn who struggled in the middle of the race and actually fell all the way back to 6th place, but was able to battle back up to 4th and finish with a time of 1:31:20. In 5th place, the new comer Patrick Stroupe competing in his first ever USATF Outdoor National Championships finished in 1:32:54. In 6th place was Mike Tarantino who was competing in his 4th Outdoor Nationals. Mike finished in a time of 1:34:53. It was his first race in almost a year. In 7th place was the almost 50 year old Ray Sharpe who finished in a time of 1:35:59. The youngest athlete in the field, Mike Kazmierzczak from Long Island finished up in 8th place with his time of 1:45:00.
Kevin and Tim both qualified for the Pan-Am Games, but Kevin is going to compete at the 50km instead of the 20km in Brazil so Matt Boyles will be competing instead of Kevin, and Tim has decided to focus on the 20km at the IAAF World Championships in Brazil, so John Nunn will take his spot and represent the US. This will be John's 2nd Pan-Am Games team.
For the women's race, Teresa Vail took off from step one and easily won in a time of
1:37:28. The real race though was for 2nd place between Jolene Moore, Sam Cohen and Maria Michta. The trio walked together through almost 15km waiting for someone to make a move. As Maria slowed a bit, Jolene tasted blood and make her move. All three women walked themselves to either a year best or a PR. Jolene finished in 2nd in a time of 1:39:24. Both Jolene and Teresa qualifed for the Pan-AM Games in Brazil. Teresa will be also be the sole representative for the US at the IAAF World Championships in Japan. Sam Cohen finished up in 3rd place to walk her way to a season best with her time of 1:40:53. Michta though got herself a lifetime best with her time of 1:41:27. Susan Randall placed 5th in a time of 1:49:57, while Solmiya Logan was 6th in a time of 1:53:48.

Rocket wins Norwegian National 20km
Erik Tysse, just 6 days after placing 8th at the IAAF Racewalk Challenge in LaCoruna, Spain in a time of 1:21:32, wins the Norwegian National Championships in a time of 1:22:03. After lapping the field, he lost motivation but still managed to walk a superb time.
The 10,000m race will be tomorrow afternoon.
Great job to the Norwegian Rocket.

Team Plaetzer superb in La Coruna
The west coast of Spain was one again the site of one of the World's best competitions. The IAAF Racewalking Challenge was held today in the beautiful city of LaCoruna. The women started at 6:30pm, with the men folling 20 minutes later at 6:50pm. The 1km loop was packed with fans as Paqillo Fernandez went after the World Record held by Jefferson Perez. He split 5km in 19:28, then 10km in 38:36 and 15km in 58:12, but the last 5km he struggled to do 20:45. He finished though with the fastest time of the year so far with is 1:18:50. The women's race saw Rita Turova finish in a time of 1:28:44, to earn her 3rd consecutive Challenge win. In second place, the Queen of Team Plaetzer finished in a time of 1:30:22. So far in the Challenge she has placed 1st and then gotten second the last three races to the incredible Turova. Third place was Claudia Stef from Romania in a time of 1:31:54.
With Kjersti placing 2nd it was up to her brother Erik to maintain his string of top-10 finishes at the Challenge and he did so in superb fashion passing the Mexican Edar Sanchez with just 100 meters to go. Erik finished in a time of 1:21:32 to place 8th. Meanwhile the duo of Tim and Kevin Eastler worked together through 8km before Kevin dropped the pace. A little too fast for Seaman but he hung on strong. Kevin finished in a time of 1:22:56 to get the Olympic "A" standard for Beijing placing 12th, while Tim just missed it with the second fastest time of his career in a time of 1:23:38 to place 13th. 2004 Olympian John Nunn was also competing and he finished in a time of 1:28:52 to place 24th.
Tim and Kevin return back to the US tomorrow to prepare for the US National Championships to be held in Indianapolis on June 23rd.

Eder Sanchez Triumphs
In the Estadio Heriberto Jara, in Xalapa, Mexico, at an altitude of 1500m (4921 feet about sea level) Eder Sanchez from Mexico took the pace from the beginning, completing the first 400m in 1:28. Next up was David Mejia from Mexico in second place and they stayed that way until Jefferson Perez caught them just before the kilometer mark. The whole group, including the American Tim Seaman, went though the first kilometer under 3:50. At that point Tim was in last place. From there it was all Jefferson and Eder. Back and forth they went though the 4km mark, until Eder finally pulled away triumphantly, winning in a time of 18 minutes and 40 seconds, breaking the stadium record held by Alejandro Lopez. Tim struggled with the last two kilometers, finishing up in 6th place in a time of 19 minutes 59 seconds.

Tim´s race did not go according to plan. He walked his worse race in almost seven years to place 14th in a terrible time of 1:38:31. The weather was the worse that he has seen since the 1999 World Championships in Seville.
His teammate Kevin Eastler walked a solid race to place 7th in a time of 1:29:47.
Jefferson Perez from Ecuador barely nicked the Colombian to place first in a time of 1:25:08. When the World Record Holder walks a time of 1:25 it is for sure hot.
The womens race had slightly better conditions, but only slightly. Jolene Moore placed 13th with a time of 1:47:48 while Canada´s Rachel Lavallee was 10th with a time of 1:44:??.
The two South Texas Club walkers, Ricardo and Roberto Vergara struggled a bit today. The pressure of the big exam they had to take took its toll on the twins as Ricardo placed 14th in a time of 51:49. Roberto , who had strep throat last week, placed 15th in a time of 52:24.
Tomorrow the mens 50km goes off at 6am and the Jr. girls race goes off about 10:30pm.

Typical ´Tim`story....
Well, yesterday the Vergara brothers arrived from America into the Nagantes airport. Before Tim left the States, he had to promise Coach AC Jaime that he would be there at the airport to pick them up to make sure that everything would be ok. So, instead of paying a taxi 72 reals, (which is a little over $40 US Dollars), someone at the hotel contacted a taxi they knew to take Tim to the airport, wait with him for the boys and then take the back to the hotel. Well, as is typical with Tim and taxi´s something happened. Tim and Sandro the taxi driver were about 2km away from the airport when they heard a loud BOOM! sound coming from the engine. The driver tried to keep driving, but the car just completely shut down. Tim suspected it was the timing belt...but how the heck does he translate that into Portugese??. Anyway, Sandro was nice enough to call another taxi, after Tim gave him 50 reals, and another taxi driver came and picked him up. When he got to the airport he was told by the driver of the new taxi that he had to pay another 10 reals. So, Tim coughed up another 10 reals and went inside to wait for the boys. Their plane arrived about 45 minutes late, but upon arriving with Robert Garcia - one of their teachers from high school, they made it back to the hotel. After of course paying another 72 reals to the 3rd taxi driver of the night. Only Tim could have such luck, eh?
Tim´s training yesterday was good, but hot. Because it was his first day he woke up late and had to train in the middle of the day. Needless to say it was over 30 degrees Celcius and not a cloud in the sky. 12km in the morning, then another 8km run in the afternoon.
Tuesday morning brought about slightly cooler weather for Tim. He did his training at around 9am, and he did the typical Norwegian Fartlek. It was a good day, but towards the end of the workout it got pretty hot. Once the Vergara brothers were done with the test that they had to take, the group went and did a few minutes of sight seeing before they had to go back to the hotel so that the brothers could do their first workout in three days. It took them 35 hours of traveling to get from South Texas to Brazil.
After that they all went to dinner at a nice pizza buffet place.
Tomorrow the rest of the team arrives, so it should be interesting.....
More updates tomorrow.
Sunday, April 15
Yesterday America.....Today Brazil
Tim arrived today in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina in preperation for the Pan-Am Cup to be held on April 21 and 22nd. Tim reports that the weather is hot and muggy but the people are a nice combination of German and Brazilian mix. The city is called Cambirou and seems to resemble a combination of Miami Beach meets Greece meets Mexico. While Tim speaks not a word of Portugese, his Spanish is coming in extremely handy.
While the meet web site reported that the airport was only 12km away from the city, it was actually 40km away and costs almost $50 for a taxi!
More to updates to come tomorrow from Tim.....

Team Plaetzer ´Amazes` in Rio Major
Team Plaetzer put on a superb show at the IAAF Grand Prix in Rio Major, Portugal. Erik, the Norwegian Rocket, placed 3rd in a time of 1:20:56, just 30 seconds behind the 2004 Olympic Champion. Meanwhile, big sister Kjersti placed 2nd to the Belarussian with a time of 1:28:53.

Tim is back!!!
Today Tim did what he had been unable to do for the past 3 years, walk fast for 20km. The 2x Olympian walked his fastest time since May 2004 by placing second in a time of 1:24:21. Kevin Eastler won the race in a time of 1:24:12. The two walked side by side until 19.5km when Eastler, the stronger of the two, put on a bug surge to break the tape. The time is a World Championship/Olympic Games "B" standard.

Quotes from the 2007 Indoor Nationals
Here is what Tim said:
Tim Seaman (men's 5,000 meter race walk winner): I'm very excited to be able to equal the record with my tenth consecutive win. It was a struggle. I never take anything for granted. Because the world championship and Olympic distances are so much longer, I can't do any specific training for this event. No speed training allowed. But certainly my goal was to get to this point. Kevin (Eastler) is my training partner. He is so strong. I can't let up for one second when he is racing. At this point in my career it is certainly much tougher mentally to keep going. But I do this for the kids with the South Texas Walking Club and all the kids who aspire to this sport.

Flanagan dominates; Seaman makes history at AT&T USA Indoor Champs
Click the above link to see the entire article. Here is the relevant part about Tim's race:
Decade of dominance for Seaman
Two-time Olympian and multiple national record holder Tim Seaman made history with his 10th consecutive career victory in the men's 5,000m race walk, finishing in 19:24.38. With his win, Seaman matched the 10 national indoor walk titles won by National Track & Field Hall of Famer Henry Laskau between 1948 and '57. It was Seaman's 32nd overall national title at any distance indoors, outdoors or on the roads. Kevin Eastler was second in 19:28.63.
****NOTE**** Tim's time is the 9th fastest in the World this year and Kevin's is the 10th fastest.
What they forgot to say also is that Matt Boyles had a superb day, walking to an almost 1 minute PR. For sure Matt gets the "Athlete of the Meet Award" in our mind. Matt became the 7th American ever to break 20 minutes in the 5km.
Also, Zac and Mike did a very good job also, especially considering the fact that Zac hasn't been training due to obligations with school and Mike had been doing 50km work up until a few weeks ago. Great job guys.

February 18th --- AL's Day
February 18th is a special day for me. It is not a good day, but it is one that will touch my heart forever. On this day, three years ago, Al Heppner took his life.
Al you are in my heart and prayers everyday. There is not a workout that goes by that I don't think of you, and how many thousands of miles we walked stride for stride. Though you are no longer "here", you are a great friend and you are an inspiration to me everyday. I still refuse to talk about you in the past tense, because for me, you are with me all of the time. Thank you for all that you did for me. Your Friend, Tim

Local Olympian Back "Home"
Story from the Brightwaters Newsletter
Have you seen who has been tearing up the roads around Brightwaters? You might think that we are talking about the construction that has been taking place around the lakes, but no. We are talking about none other than two-time Olympian Tim Seaman, who is currently training for the 20km racewalk at the USA Track and Field National Championships in Indianapolis on June 25th. Tim, who grew up in North Babylon, has been finishing off his final preparations with his former high school coach and 49 year Village of Brightwaters resident, Frank Manhardt. Coach Manhardt, as he is still known to Tim, rides his bicycle while Tim speeds along side him with the unique heel toe style that has brought him ten American records and 29 National championships. Racewalking, which has been an Olympic event since 1904, has two simple rules. Once foot has to maintain contact with the ground at all times, and your knee must be straight from the moment that the heel touches the ground until the legs passes underneath the body. Tim finds that training in Brightwaters has always been very motivating and calls our Village one of his favorite places in the world to train. Before the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Tim also did his final preparations in Brightwaters and he walked his way to the fastest time ever by an American at the Olympic Games. Tim and Coach Manhardt have walked and rode almost 250 miles up and down the canal and around the Cascade lakes in the past three weeks alone and have done over 2000 miles since 1996.
