 TI Pirate Bantam Heart Walk Honoree

On December 4^th of 2009, Hunter Foley was seen at Pediatric Cardiology Associates in Syracuse, NY because of an irregularity on an EKG. They did some further tests and explained to us that Hunter had what is called an Atrial Septal Defect caused by a hole in his heart that never closed after birth. They explained to his parents that although Hunter had not had any severe symptoms yet, but as he grew and entered his teens the possibility of him experiencing symptoms would increase dramatically. The risks to not fixing this hole would mean symptoms that included things as minor as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and tiredness. The other symptoms he could experience were heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. In May 2010 the doctors  tried to fix the hole with a non-invasive procedure but Hunter’s defect was too large and located up against the wall of his heart near a major artery and vein coming in from his lungs. The doctors told Hunter he would have to have no physical activity for 6-8 weeks after his surgery. At this point, Hunter’s primary concern throughout the scheduling of his surgery was not missing the hockey season. So in August of 2010, Hunter underwent open heart surgery for the heart defect 2 days before he turned 12 yrs old. He was back on the ice October 2, 2010.

This year family, friends, and teamates created "Team Hunter" to raise money for the American Heart Association’s North Country Heart Walk which will be held on Satuday April 28th.  At the present time "Team Hunter" has raised over $2000.00 and would love to add to that total.  If you would like to contribute contact Jennifer Foley @ 486-2026.  For additional information about the walk call the American Heart Association at 783-4116

TIYH Banquet To Be Held

On Sunday April 29th Thousand Islands Youth Hockey will hold their end of the year banquet at the Clayton Fire Hall starting at 3:00.  The menu will consist of salad, spaghetti, meatballs, homemade sauce and bread.  There will be no charge to all players and siblings.  The cost for parents and other adults will be $7.00.  All teams will be recognized for their acheivements during the past season and have a chance to share a meal with their families and friends. Annual Meeting and Proposed By-Law Changes Announced

On Tuesday May 15th Thousand Islands Youth Hockey will hold it's annual meeting.  The meeting will be held at Cerow Recreation Park in the concession stand starting at 6:30.  At this meeting board members for the 2012-2013 season as well as several by-law proposals will be voted on .  All members who attend the meeting must be present prior to the start of the meeting and sign in for voting purposes.  To download our current by-laws click here.  Below are the proposed by-law changes:

1.   Proposal:   Remove from Article VIII:  The position of correspondence secretary should be abolished.  The duties of this position can be divided among the Recording Secretary, Treasurer or Registrar, and team Directors.

2.  Proposal:  Add under Article X:  A person that has a child playing for another association cannot hold a board position for TIYH. 

3.  Proposal: Add under Article XV-Coaches: If TIYH pays for a coach to attend a Level 4 Clinic, the coach will be required to serve 2 consecutive years as a coach for TIYH. If the coach does not serve 2 consecutive years, the coach will be required to pay back the Level 4 fees to the Association based on the time the coach will not be coaching. 

Rationale: Level 4 is expensive and it would be in the best interest of TIYH to be able to depend on qualified coaches for 2 years.

4  Proposal: Add under Article IX:  Beginning in the   2013-2014 season, anyone who wishes to run for an Executive Office will be required to attend a minimum of 3 TIYH Board meetings prior to the elections.  Rationale: This will allow the interested person to have an opportunity to understand the TIYH Board operations and familiarize themselves with the prior years’ experiences with all the teams and board members.

5.   Proposal: Add under Article V- Board Meetings: If an issue arises that requires Board attention, and the President will not call a Special meeting, an Executive Officer can call a meeting if the issue has been submitted in writing. There will not be a time allotment for submission. 

Rationale: If an issue arises and there is a deadline to discuss/resolve an issue, it is not entirely up to the President to call a meeting. This ensures the best interest of the Association is in order at all times.

6.  Proposal: Add under Article VIII:  While holding a TIYH Board Position, board members may not hold a seat on another Youth Hockey Association Board. 

Rationale:  Conflict of Interest - A person cannot have the best interest of two separate associations in mind when making decisions

7.  Proposal:  Add under Article X:  For voting purposes, each individual team, within an age appropriate level, regardless of the amount of players rostered will have a director.  Each director will have a whole vote. 

Learn to Skate Program Evaluation 

This year Thousand Islands Youth Hockey had over 65 children take part in our learn to skate program and we would like to know what our parents thought of our program.  If your child participated in our program and you did not get a chance to fill out an evaluation the last night of practice we ask that you complete this short evaluation.  Thank you and we hope to see you back next year!
