THOMSON MEMORIAL PARK

Opened in 1960, this park commemorates the site founded by the original settlers in the eastern Toronto section of Scarborough: the Thomson family, who arrived in 1796. And included on the site is the Scarborough Historical Museum (open 10am-5pm daily). Visitors to the park will not want to miss the Museum; you can learn all about the early settlers to the area. One of the area's nicest parks, it offers a variety of activities including three lighted tennis courts, full-sized lighted soccer field, softball, a wading pool for kids and a petting zoo. It has four picnic shelters that can hold up to 675 people, ideal for family, team sports and office outings.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Thomson Park Tennis Club has been part of the Toronto community since 1978. From the moment of its inception, the Club has assumed a leadership role within the community. Year-after-year, we continue to create a friendly environment for family and friends to enjoy the game of tennis. We encourage community building through open invitation BBQ's, and to help to maintain one of Toronto's oldest and most cherished facilities. The TPTC remains one of the top tennis clubs in Toronto and number one among its members. On behalf of the TPTC, I welcome all returning members and those that are considering joining TPTC for the first time. At TPTC we place a high value on tradition, excellence and community. It matters greatly to us that the community and our members are well informed of all matters concerning the Club. We recently launched our new web site and I hope that you find it user friendly and that the information contained on its various links help you find what you are looking for, including a link to our membership package. The web site will be our primary information tool for communicating with our members and the community. As new events and information become available, we will update the web site along with our outdoor bulletin boards located next to the Club’s main entrance. For those of you that are contemplating joining the Club for the first time, I assure you that you will not be disappointed. The best way to keep the Club strong is to keep our foundation of friendship strong. Your support is greatly appreciated.

VOLUNTEERISM

Operating a tennis club is not easy. A great deal of work, time and effort is required. Not to mention having good intentions, certain skills and the genuine interest in wanting to help your community. Volunteering at TPTC is about keeping a wonderful tennis club alive within a community where people can feel safe and enjoy an inexpensive sport with their family and friends. I am entering my 12th year as the President of TPTC and as I look toward the future I envision a vibrant Club. A healthy club with over 300 members, strong junior tennis camps, competitive STF teams at all levels, a new club house (with washrooms), more female players, adults improving their skills each year, a strong and well participated in house league, and most of all a volunteer base that is second to none in Toronto. However, we sometimes take for granted that people will volunteer their time when needed or that the people that have always run the Club will continue to do so because they love to do it, and they do it well. I have the following words of advice -- Do not be afraid to love Thomson Park and your community as well. If you care about your community and you feel that you can contribute to Thomson Park, then DO NOT WAIT to be asked, BE PRO-ACTIVE and ask a member of the Executive as to how you can give back to your community.

THOMSON PARK TENNIS CLUB

Thomson Park Tennis Club is a seasonal outdoor facility with a healthy social atmosphere and lots of great social events for our members. We are located at the corner of Lawrence and Brimley in Scarborough. The Club offers 3 well maintained high quality outdoor hardcourts with stadium lighting. The club operates yearly from late April to early October. New members are always welcome.

The 2008 season has come to an end. the club is closed for the winter, but please check the website periodically for the latest information about the upcoming 2009 season.

TPTC is committed to:

1. Providing an affordable, friendly club where new members feel welcome, old members feel at home, and people from all walks of life can enjoy healthy exercise in a community atmosphere.

2. Promoting recreational tennis -- “the sport of a lifetime” -- attracting new players, and raising the overall interest and participation in the game.

3. Encouraging and supporting the development of tennis skills for players of all ages and levels of ability.

4. Continually upgrading and improving our facilities -- the courts, the clubhouse, and the grounds -- while offering a full range of programs and activities.

5. In short, our goal is to make the TPTC the best and most enjoyable place to play (and learn) tennis in Scarborough and the surrounding community.
