TNLer Cassidy Coleman named CalHiSports State Girls Athlete of the Week

TNL's Cassidy Coleman has been blasting through her high-school competition like Sherman's march through the South.  And, by her efforts, somebody noticed that we actually play softball in San Diego.  Read all about it here.  I'm sure it ranks right up there with the numerous WOZ awards she's received at TNL!

Oh, and if that wasn't enough, Cassidy also just broke the single season San Diego CIF record for strikeouts, breaking the old record of 400, and playoffs are still pending!

The girls went 7-0 and improved their tournament record during the Spring Season to 28-0-1 winning all four tournaments they participated in. Congratulations 8th graders on a fantastic run.

TNL 18 Gold "Classified"

No, you're not reading something top secret.

In Southern California ASA, becoming an 18 Gold team got a little more complicated this year, with the total teams being limited to 54.  in order to enforce this limit, two qualification tournaments are to be held, the first of which took place this weekend (1/17-1/18) in Fontana.

After a slow, rusty start in a 7-1 loss to Firecrackers (Ristow), TNL reeled off three wins over So Cal Primetime, Minors Gold, and Fillys Gold to nab one of the 24 "classification" spots up for grabs.

TNL's 14U squad brought home the hardware at the Fresno Force Classic, held annually in beautiful Fresno, California.  Billed as a meeting between Northern and Southern California, as is often the case, it was a lot of traveling to play a lot of So Cal teams, including downing the Firecrackers 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th in the championship game.

ST PATTY'S DAY SUCCESS IN THE DESERT
Playing in their first tournament as a team, The Next Level 12's continued to grow as a group, taking third place in the Las Vegas - St Patrick's Day tournament.  Going 3-0 in pool play with solid pitching, the 12's made it a lot more interesting come Sunday in bracket play, winning their first three games, all in "walk-off" fashion in the bottom of the last inning.  In the semifinals, they rallied yet again in the final inning only to fall short to the eventual tournament winners, the Las Vegas Rebels.  A solid showing by every member of the team.
The 14u team continued their dominance this spring season going 8-0 in Las Vegas, outscoring their eight opponents by a combined score of 74-12.  In the Championship game, TNL outlasted a very strong Team Smith team winning 5-2 before heading home in the wee hours of the night. In a total team effort, the girls were impressive both offensively, and in the circle  Their next tournament will be The Surf City classic in two weeks at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex.

TNL 14's CO-CHAMPIONS- Surf City Classic
The TNL 14's found themselves winners of their 3rd straight tournament, this time sharing the title with and outstanding Firecracker team.  After advancing through the quarter finals and semi-finals against two quality opponents, TNL matched up against the Firecrackers in the Championship game late Sunday night.  This was an old fashion pitchers duel, as both hurlers were outstanding, throwing 7 complete shutout innings each, sending it into an international tie breaking scenario.  Up against the clock, TNL scored 1 run in the top of the 8th, and the Firecrackers answered with one of their own in the bottom half before the city turned off the lights and the game ended in a tie.  Probably a fitting ending as both teams played fantastic softball, with all the intensity and excitement of a college world series game.  The next tournament stop for the 14u team will be in lovely Fresno, California at the end of April.

The Next Level took home the prize in last weekend's Breakers 16U tournament held at Rancho Bernardo High School with a 5-0-1 overall record.

TNL Un-Team Photo
Hey TNL Fans!

Unlike questionable trinkets from the Franklin Mint or strange "collectible" stuff you might find on eBay, you can invest in the results of the first of what we call the official TNL "Un-Team" Photo. Yes, for two months or so out of the year, our hatchlings leave their happy TNL home and go off to play in strange colored uniforms from their respective high-schools.

This TNL group of high-school players will NEVER BE ASSEMBLED IN THIS MANNER AGAIN! Act now to order your prints of this once in a lifetime event at the TNL Photo Website.

This offer void where prohibited. TNL certifies that no CIF rules were harmed in the making of this photo.

Florida Finals

TNL 14U Gold Wins Florida Qualfier
TNL's 14U Gold squad took 1st place and secured their berth to the ASA National Championships in Normal Illinois in Lakeland, Florida.

The weekend began with rain. Much needed rain for the area, but it forced a change in the format of the tournament. The three-game guarantee was dropped in favor of a straight double-elimination bracket. However, the decision was also made to complete the winner's side of the bracket as soon as possible, as insurance against more rain.

The 9am games actually got underway around 12:30pm.

TNL's opening game Saturday was an 9-0 run-rule decision against Team Florida. This set up a matchup against the South Florida Mini-Bulls. TNL took an early 2-0 lead, but the Mini-Bulls used a TNL miscue and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1. TNL then came on strong, with the full seven-inning game ending in a 10-2 TNL victory.

That set up the finals of the winner's bracket against Tampa Mustangs (Frank). TNL pushed a pair of runs across early and held on for a 2-0 win. Both teams threatened numerous times but both sides used excellent defense and pitching to escape.

In the finals of the loser's bracket, Tampa Mustangs met the Mini-Bulls and after much of the game being tied at 0-0 the Mustangs struck first with a run, but later the Mini-Bulls tied it again at 1-1. The Mustangs put three across late to win 4-1.

That set up the rematch for the championship. The Mustangs struck first, putting up three runs in the top of the 2nd to put TNL in an early hole. TNL battled back to tie the game at 3, but the Mustangs weren't finished yet, as they would take a 4-3 lead. With two outs, TNL started the winning rally, scoring four on a 2-RBI double to left by Laura Winter and a 250' BOMB by starting pitcher Cassidy Coleman. TNL would stretch its lead to 12-4 to win the championship by run rule after six innings.

TNL would like to thank all the friendly folks in Central Florida who made our trip special, and add a special shout-out to the Tampa Mustangs, a talented, classy team who will no doubt join us in Normal, Illinois.

TNL has now qualified teams at 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18A for the ASA National Championsips this year!

TNL 12U Qualifies!
Congratulations to The Next Level's 12U team for a 2nd-place finish at So-Cal State and their berth to the ASA 12U National Championship in Roseville! TNL downed Mizuno Pride, So Cal Dynasty, Firecrackers and OC Wildcats (who finished 3rd) before falling to Lakewood Ladies in the championship game. Congratulations also to Lakewood and OC Wildcats for their fine tournament performances.

In the Triple Crown Quicksilver Classic, TNL had the 14 Gold team competing in the 16U division, and the 16U team competing in the 18U division. Both teams brought home the hardware by going undefeated. 16U had a memorable championship game rally, having fallen into a 9-1 defecit, which left most observers planning for the "IF" championship game. However, TNL's hitters had other ideas, and completed an impressive rally to win 10-9 on a walk-off, bases-loaded infield single by long-time TNLer Jordan Parsons.

In the 16U division, TNL's 14U squad was a single, shaky inning away from shutting out the tournament, giving up only two runs in the winner's bracket final game against San Diego Thunder, having shut out every other team they faced in pool and bracket play. TNL then waited for the completion of the double-elimination loser's bracket to see Thunder again and finished the tournament on a no-hitter by Cassidy Coleman and an 8-0 run-rule victory.

TNL now has three squads (12U, 16U, and 18U) qualified for their respective ASA National Championships. TNL's 14U Gold squad takes to the air on Thursday (5/31) to attend an ASA open qualifier in Lakeland, Florida in hopes of punching their ticket to the big dance.

TNL's 16U team finished at the bottom of the heap at the 16U "A" National Championship, with a stunning 2-BBQ finish after capturing 2nd place at the So Cal State Championships.

TNL turns out for Taylor Kelly at SDSU!

Taylor From Her TNL Days
Last Friday, TNLers turned out in droves to the San Diego State softball Cambell-Cartier classic, in support of Taylor Kelly, a TNL player, and member of the very first TNL team. Taylor now is a freshman starter at shortstop for Cal, and a loud bunch from TNL made sure to show their support every time Taylor's name was announced.

Cal did their job on the field as well, beating their SDSU hosts 6-1.

Observers noted that TNL's colors matched those of Cal and wondered if it was a coincidence. Taylor was also supported by a sizable contingent wearing purple, which may have something to do with Taylor's high school, Santana.

Best wishes to Cal in the upcoming season, and Taylor, thanks for being a great example of what The Next Level is all about.

TNL 14U Gold defeated Indiana Shockwave 7-2 to open pool play at the 14U National Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee. With a 10-2 win over Bristol (PA) Stompers, TNL claimed the top seed in their pool and opened bracket play at 5pm Wednesday against the Capitaland Crush, posting an 8-3 victory. They continued bracket play Thursday at 11am against the Texas Elite and won 7-0. Against the Louisiana Patriots, TNL came out and made a number of uncharacteristic errors in the field, falling down 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st, but came back to win 4-1. Later that day, with a 10:30 rain-delayed start, TNL defeated Fire and Ice 3-0 to reach the round of eight in the winner's bracket. Saturday at 1pm, TNL took on So Cal Wicked, and advanced to the round of four in the winner's bracket with a 10-0 victory. Saturday at 7, TNL hit the first bump in its quest for the title, a strong Corona Angels Red team in a quarterfinal matchup that saw TNL lose in the 9th inning 4-1. Immediately playing in the loser's bracket, TNL had to again face the exhausted Texas Elite, playing in their 6th game of the day, and prevailed 10-1. That led to the final day of action, where TNL opened by defeating the Sorcerers '91 team 4-2, then won the rematch with Corona Angels Red 1-0, but fell to the Smashers in the final.

TNL 16U played in Las Cruces, New Mexico in Western Nationals. TNL won both its pool games, beginning with a 12-2 victory over the LC Renegades and finished by downing Kaikahamine 12-5. To open bracket play, TNL defeated Colorado Commotion 1-0, and awaits the winner of New Mexico Nemesis and Victor Valley Magic.

The 16U Western Nationals was cut short due to weather, but as one of two undefeated teams left in the tournament, TNL was awarded the championship and an '07 berth to ASA Nationals!

The Next Level Class of 2005!
TNL 2005 Seniors
All of us here at The Next Level would like to congratulate and thank the TNL class of 2005 for their contributions to the organization both on and off the field. They are the pioneers who helped make this organization the best in the nation. This is TNL's first graduating class in its brief history, and the players, parents and coaches would all like to extend our best wishes to them and their bright futures.

Rachel Myer
Rachel Myer
Rachel is one of only three players who remain from the original TNL team put together back in 2001. She is the first player in the organization's history to start and finish all the way up through every level. Regarded as the most likeable teammate by her peers, Rachel provided us with the most memorable moment in 2005 when she roped a single in her very last at bat in a TNL uniform to help secure the Elite Fastpitch Championship, causing an emotional swarming of the field by the entire team. Rachel will continue her education at the U.C. Santa Barbara.

Kendall Fearn
Kendall Fearn
Kendall joined the team in 2002 and quickly became one of TNL's leaders and most recognizable figures. Known for her tremendous power at the plate, Kendall leaves TNL as a career leader in HR's with 31 and RBI's with 205. What stands out even more than her lofty statistics is Kendall's loyalty and pride in her team and her teammates. Being the oldest of a very young and talented group, Kendall had opportunities to go elsewhere and play with kids her age and older, but she always declined. "I wanted to be a part of something special," said Kendall. "I saw the direction TNL was going in and I wanted to be a part of building something great. I wouldn't change my experiences for the world." For her efforts, Kendall received a scholarship to the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she will continue her very promising softball career.

Jessica Smith (III)
Tres
The newest member of the 18u Gold team, "Tres" (as she is affectionately referred to because she is the 3rd Jessica Smith to join TNL) needed a place to play after coming off of an injury in 2004. She wasted no time fitting in both personally and athletically, as she finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record, and a 0.89 ERA. Jessie will continue her softball career at the University of North Texas in Denton.

TNL Sends Three to Addidas National Future Stars
Congratulations to The Next Level's Jace Williams, Courtney Craig, and Trina Harrison for being chosen to participate in the invitation-only Adidas National Futures camp held on the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas.

The TNL trio were among 44 elite softball players chosen from throughout the nation to play in this exclusive event.

During the camp they worked out and competed in games coached by college coaches and were also evaluated by Sam Ducato, the head of the women's selection committee for future USA National teams. Congratulations to Jace, Courtney and Trina from all of your friends and family at The Next Level!

The Next Level Looks Forward to the Summer!

The coaches and board of directors of The Next Level Softball continue to refine the organization's plans for the summer when our high-school players return, as the younger teams continue to practice and play. As before, the board would like to assure everyone that TNL is not going anywhere. As one of the premiere travel softball organizations in the nation, having produced many talented athletes that play at the collegiate level, the board and our members have pulled together to continue this great tradition.

For the 2008 season, all age groups are committed to participate in many tournaments and arrangements for these have already been made. This summer is packed, just as it always is, and TNL will continue it's quest for the 12U thru 18 Gold ASA championships.

Mike Myer & Jerry Delamater have assumed the practice and leadership duties of the club. We also have coaches in place for each of the age groups: Doug, Leslie, Jamie and the return of a former member of our coaching staff (and ever a part of the extended TNL family), Cathy. These coaches will all be there to help Mike and Jerry, and we will continue the tradition that makes TNL a true organization, not just a collection of teams that share a name.

If you have any questions about TNL, its mission, or have information relevant to the organization or its players, please contact us.

In closing, as always, we are... TNL!
