A Couple Thoughts....

  August '08

Hi again! It's the heat of August for sure. Hope everyone is out there doin' something! Stay active. Run, walk, sweat. I'm trying to get ready for the Seashore Marathon in November. I'm sure there are others that are training for this as well. Good luck to all! I had an 11 mile training run yesterday, after 10 miles I was done! Oh well, there will alwasys be another day.

And the Olympics are this month! Go U.S.A. !!

So grab your running shoes, get out and do your thing. Then, grab a hamburger and an ice tea.... take some time for yourself. Don't over do it in this heat. Use you head. And have fun!

See ya on the road.....

News From Joan

Joan's most recent newsletter....

Hello Club Members -
It has been a great summer - the weather has been perfect - the tourists are not jamming the road too much now that they have widened the highway - and the club membership just keeps on growing.  We would like to mention our most recent new members and hope you will get to meet them on the next tuesday that you are with us.  Welcome to Sharon Putterman and her daughter Kari, Bill and Merrill Liggett, Kris, Keith and Erika Lawson, Lisa Wynn,  Regina Lundeen, and John Rainier.  Again, welcome to the Grove Club, the funnest, fittest group of friends you will ever be with.
And usually whenever we do get together we start talking food - all that exercise make us hungry, so,,,,,,,,,,,Plans are in the works for our annual picnic and this year it will be in September and will be held in Rehoboth at Deauville Beach ---- we will keep everyone posted as soon as all the details are finalized.
And for those of you who have missed us these past few weeks due to summer vacations or family fun, we are collecting our annual renewal of dues.  There is a change this year though. The Grove Club dues (best bargain in town!!) will be increasing from $10.00 singlemembership,  to $15.00; and from $20.00 for families to $25.00.  Those prices however do not go into effect till after August 1st ----- so anyone paying prior, can renew for one more terrific year at -----you guessed it, LAST YEARS PRICES.  Like I said, this is still the best bargain at the beach.  Next year, our incentives will be new and improved and we hope to add a clothing line for you to pick from.  As if that is not enough, of course you all remember that you can get fabulous discounts at The Athlete in the outlets, and Rehoboth Beach Running Company just for being members to Grove Club.  Speaking of discounts and bargains,.........................
The Seashore Striders has awesome pre-registration prices on line or through  mail-in registrations for all of their upcoming races.  On Saturday July 26th there is the Chads Run/Walk 5K at Cape Henlopen High, and Sunday the 27th in Rehoboth at Deauville Beach you can run or walk the YMCA 5 miler.  The following sunday, August 3rd,  is the Run for JJ. This race starts at Stuart Kingston on the boardwalk and is always very popular - so be sure to register early. Then finishing out the summer series is the Dam Mill 5K on Sat August 9th in Cupola Park in Millsboro, and the grand finale of course is at Grove Park for the Last Blast Predicition on Saturday August 30th.  For times and applications please go to www.seashorestriders.com or call 644-8952.
One last note before I close.  Many of our membership are sooooooooo talented that they can run, bike, and swim.  This past week on 2 separate incidents two bikers were struck on route one.  One managed to pick himself up and dust off and showed up later for another ride.  The other one took the ambulance to Beebe and we still have not heard how she is doing.  Both were riding for the exercise.  Remember as you ride that at this time of year more than half of the drivers are not from around here, are on shut-down/vacation mode, and we need to be extra careful.  Wear very bright colors - please ride in groups whenever you can - and stay safe out there!!!
Have a great second half of this fabulous summer, and don't forget ---- Get Your Dues In.
Thanks
Joan Williamson, Secretary (for now), Grove Club

Hi Friends -
After finishing my notes last night to you all - I found paperwork on 2 more new members! They are Terry Sutton and Jeffrey Riehl - Please give them a warm welcome the next tuesday you are with us.
I also found out our Picnic will definately be on September 9th again this year we will be using Deauville Beach.  Please let us know what dish, or fake meat (or real) you will be bringing.  Also, remember your chairs and towels.  As in all years past - a "fun" run/walk is being planned even as I write this - last year we had designated stops and had to play poker as I recall with some very interesting outcomes !!!!  Come one come all, arrive a little early if you can to help set up - and then strap on the shoes for the fun.  When were done, we eat=============OH Yeah - someone is planning on bringing something with chocolate for dessert - right??
We also are trying to coordinate our first date for road clean up. - Save September 16th - a tuesday.  For those who missed this announcement, we have volunteered through the state and Del Dot to maintain one of sussex counties country roads. We will include our regular tuesday run after our clean up and I will be bringing some cold Ice Tea to quench our thirsts for when we are done.
And then on a more sober note, we did receive news of how rough the surf has been this week from one of our member/nurses.  The cases in the local Emergency room have been very telling - fractures, breaks, etc., so please swimmers, do be careful.
Laura Ritter, and employee at the Cape Gazette wrote that alot of bike accidents are not being reported by the police to the papers.  The papers do want to publish these and are she asked us to please email the paper anytime we have info at newsroom@CapeGazette.com
Thanks - Joan Williamson

Humans were born to run, researchers say

By John Jurgensen, The Hartford Courant

To the Nike nation, the joggers in dogged pursuit of fitness or the finish line, the news will come as no surprise: The human body was built to run.
Wide shoulders. Narrow hips. Pronounced posteriors. Spring-loaded legs. These are some of physical features that work together to finish marathons. But they’re also the keys to a capability that emerged about 2 million years ago and may have guided the evolution of the human body.
The importance of running as an evolutionary force, say the researchers behind a report published today in the journal Nature, has been overlooked because humans are so much slower than other species.
“We’re absolutely pathetic sprinters,” says Daniel E. Lieberman, a professor of biological anthropology at Harvard University. Going flat-out against horses, antelopes and other fleet-footed mammals, humans are sluggish, awkward and quick to tire.
But long-distance running is a different story. For one thing, it’s a relatively rare habit.
“Primates (such as apes and monkeys) don’t engage in that kind of behavior. Humans are completely alone in that,” says the report’s co-author, Dennis M. Bramble of the University of Utah.
And when it comes to going the distance, humans perform well in terms of speed and endurance. For example, fit joggers regularly run 10 kilometers or more, about the average distance traveled in a day by African hunting dogs. And although some horses and dogs can pull loads for much longer distances, they tend to do so only when being driven by humans.
Lieberman and Bramble studied the physical features that make endurance running possible and then looked for their appearance in the fossil record.
Among the design elements they found most compelling were the long, powerful springs in our legs and feet. The Achilles tendon and the tendon in the arch of the foot, for example, provide flexibility and stability while walking. But they only reach their full potential for storing and releasing energy at a run when they start to stretch and recoil.
“We have these great springs in the lower legs, but the interesting thing is that no amount of walking will actually allow you to make use of these things as springs,” Bramble says.

Interested in finding out the weather for an upcoming race? Look to the left, under ADMIN there is a little sun icon...click on it for a 10 day forecast for Rehoboth Beach. That will tell you if you should show up for that race or stay home!

From Tim Bamforth...
Tim Bamforth recently wrote in his running column for the Cape Gazette:

"The Grove Club continues to meet every Tuesday night at 6 pm at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach and rain, sleet, wind, or two feet of snow does not keep that from happening. The hardest step in your training is the first step out the door."

How true....thanks, Tim
