A Couple Thoughts....
running turtle
Hey! Wait up!

September 2009

Hi! Yes, I'm still here. Kinda. Because of a foot problem I haven't been running. But I'm trying to stay active. Right now I'm doing pushups! (I want to see if I can do 100!) Yep, I'm crazy. At my age I should be happy to crank out 25. But I'm always trying to push myself, at least a little bit.

Hope all is going well with you!

News From Joan

Joan's most recent newsletter....

YEA !!!!---------------- SPRING  HAS  SPRUNG!

and I know all of us are ready.  Daffodils are poppin' everywhere I look, trees are full of buds, and daylight savings is allowing us to gather in the light of day.  Wow!  But just so you don't forget that we are a 12 month every single Tuesday group of wonderful friends, check out the attached pic of the Hot Cocoa Run in Ocean City a few weeks ago.  I know they ate better than the group that gathered in Rehoboth!! (but we tried)        Oooooooh, the treats they had!

Okay, I promised fresh spring news and here it is ..........Ken Dickens, are very own Web Master received his plaque for 160 attendances - did I hear someone mutter, run Forest, run?  Not sure, but might have.  And then Rich Diefenbach and Amy Linzey both earned their 40 attendance Grove Fleece Sweatshirts!  Matt Hete earned his long sleeve T shirt -- way to go fellow Tuesday night friends. However,  the premium that everyone looks forward to is the Jacket and just tonite .........Erik Farinas ......received his.   and then ......talk about run Forest run, how about run Margaret run, and run, and run,..run,........(energizer bunny watch out, here she comes).....was acknowledged for attending the Grove Club 400 times!!         Phew..........I am just tired from typing that!!!

We also want to  welcome   the following new members who will no doubt join this list of receipients - they are,  Beckie McMillan, Vince Kane, and Betsy & Doug Tootell  (look for them at the Cherry Blossom and Annapolis 10 Miler!)
Welcome to all .  Don't forget one and all that we have two local stores that support us.  The Athlete, and Rehoboth Beach Running Company.

The Athlete  is offering a special deal through April, an additional 5% off all purchases including shoes already on sale!!!  That means you get your Grove Club discount  PLUS  the Outlet discount.  Be sure to stop in  before this promotion ends.

As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, we are for the very first year, sponsoring a Scholarship for a Cape Henlopen High School senior student.   Our first year will be a modest attempt but still and all we want to encourage any and all of our membership to feel free to participate.  How do you do that you ask?......,  well, on certain tuesdays we will have cookies for sale, ice pops, gatorade, etc, etc.  This will be donated by whoever sponsors a particular night.  We will officially kick off our fundraising for this worthy cause the night of our road clean up - which is  April 28th!!!   So,  mark your calendars now and plan on joining us at Beacon Middle School's parking lot.  We will provide everyone with sporty stylish safety vests, but please bring your own gloves.  We will walk/jog from the parking lot out onto Warrington Road and cover both sides till we reach route 24 - not too far really, in fact shorter than our standard tuesdays!!!
So how will this benefit our Scholarship Fund you ask?  Well, when we finish, there will be refreshments in the parking lot. for your refreshment and pleasure for a very small donation.  But more importantly - they will have been provided to help a student who wants to further their education........................... So make sure to mark this date. We hope to see all of you there.

Speaking of Mariner Middle School,  did you know that  Margaret has something very positive going on in her school!   Because I was unable to cut and paste her note here,  I have sent her note as an attached document.  Please do take time to read this, and let Margaret know that your read her CHALLENGE.  Way to go Margaret.  Even when you are not running you are a super star for the kids!!

Well that is all for now except for the news that Harry and Sandy are floating somewhere in the Carribean on a very large raft.   Andy Staton will be sunning just north of the Tampa Bay this week, while Christine Haag and Lou will be all the way down on Long Key Island (as in Florida keys)  for the week. Please bring home the sun with you!!!   But Mary Beth Evans has won the travel trip as she will be leaving for a week in Paris, France this weekend!!.  Wow - wow - wow -    All of you have a great time and bring back lots of pictures to share  with your still slightly chilled friends.

see you all on Tuesday(s) to come,
Joan Williamson, Grove Club Secretary

Humans were born to run, researchers say

By John Jurgensen, The Hartford Courant

To the Nike nation, the joggers in dogged pursuit of fitness or the finish line, the news will come as no surprise: The human body was built to run.
Wide shoulders. Narrow hips. Pronounced posteriors. Spring-loaded legs. These are some of physical features that work together to finish marathons. But they’re also the keys to a capability that emerged about 2 million years ago and may have guided the evolution of the human body.
The importance of running as an evolutionary force, say the researchers behind a report published today in the journal Nature, has been overlooked because humans are so much slower than other species.
“We’re absolutely pathetic sprinters,” says Daniel E. Lieberman, a professor of biological anthropology at Harvard University. Going flat-out against horses, antelopes and other fleet-footed mammals, humans are sluggish, awkward and quick to tire.
But long-distance running is a different story. For one thing, it’s a relatively rare habit.
“Primates (such as apes and monkeys) don’t engage in that kind of behavior. Humans are completely alone in that,” says the report’s co-author, Dennis M. Bramble of the University of Utah.
And when it comes to going the distance, humans perform well in terms of speed and endurance. For example, fit joggers regularly run 10 kilometers or more, about the average distance traveled in a day by African hunting dogs. And although some horses and dogs can pull loads for much longer distances, they tend to do so only when being driven by humans.
Lieberman and Bramble studied the physical features that make endurance running possible and then looked for their appearance in the fossil record.
Among the design elements they found most compelling were the long, powerful springs in our legs and feet. The Achilles tendon and the tendon in the arch of the foot, for example, provide flexibility and stability while walking. But they only reach their full potential for storing and releasing energy at a run when they start to stretch and recoil.
“We have these great springs in the lower legs, but the interesting thing is that no amount of walking will actually allow you to make use of these things as springs,” Bramble says.

Weather
Interested in finding out the weather for an upcoming race? Look to the left, under ADMIN there is a little sun icon...click on it for a 10 day forecast for Rehoboth Beach. That will tell you if you should show up for that race or stay home!

From Tim Bamforth...
Tim Bamforth recently wrote in his running column for the Cape Gazette:

"The Grove Club continues to meet every Tuesday night at 6 pm at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach and rain, sleet, wind, or two feet of snow does not keep that from happening. The hardest step in your training is the first step out the door."

How true....thanks, Tim
