ONE LAST HOO-RAH

One last hoo-rah at the Texas Connection Showcase before high school ball starts.

Round Robin #1, Sat, Jan 5, 1:20pm, vs Hit Away (Thompson)
It only took one inning to get back into the swing of things after the Christmas break. In the 2nd, we put 4 on the board when Stacie led off with a single, Courtney walked, and Bre doubled in Stacie. A single by Haley brought in Courtney and a wild pitch scored Bre. A groundout by Maryssa moved Haley to 3rd and a single by Rachel finished the inning off. The 3rd inning picked up where we left off when Morgan led off with a walk. Sarah came in as a courtesy runner and promptly stole 2nd. Dana walked and a wild pitch put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Shelby singled home Sarah and Stacie singled home Dana. Bre then laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Shelby. Morgan made her Slam debut by pitching the first 2 innings and giving up just one hit who was thrown out at 2nd on the play. Alexis came on to finish off the shutout. Final score, 7-0.

Round Robin #2, Sat, Jan 5, 4:10pm, vs Hit Away (Drennan)
Another good offensive showing combined with strong pitching had another good result. 3 runs came in right off the bat when Cox led off with a single. Walks to Sarah and Dana loaded the bases. A fielder's choice from Stacie kept the bases loaded. Morgan came up and drove a triple over the center fielder to clear the bases. We added another in the 2nd when Bre doubled, went to 3rd on Haley's groundout, and scored on Maryssa's ground out. We sealed the victory with 5 more in the 3rd highlighted by a walk to Cox, consecutive singles from Dana, Stacie, and Shelby, a walk to Courtney, and a 2-run single from Bre. Alexis started and pitched 2 scoreless innings and Morgan came on in relief to finish off the shutout. Final score, 9-0.

Round Robin #3, Sat, Jan 5, 6:50pm, vs Angleton Varsity
As expected, we had a low-scoring game against the girls from Angleton. They started off the scoring in the 1st on a couple of singles and a walk. They managed another in the 2nd on a couple of singles and a passed ball. We responded in the bottom of the 2nd when Morgan led off with a double and scored on 2 wild pitches. That was all of the scoring in this tight game as Morgan scattered 5 hits and struck out 4. Final score, 2-1.

Round Robin #4, Sun, Jan 6, 9:00am, vs Texas Fire
This game was close until the end. We scored in the bottom of the 1st when Cox led off with a single. Bre ran for Cox and was moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah. Dana grounded out to move her to 3rd and a double to left-center by Stacie brought Sarah in. It remained 1-0 all the way until to the bottom of the 5th when Stacie led off with a single. Morgan walked to set the table for Courtney. Courtney proceeded to drive one over the center field fence for a 3-run homer. Morgan, Alexis, and Maryssa all got some work in to combine on a 1-hit shutout, striking out 6. Final score, 4-0.

Round Robin #5, Sun, Jan 6, 10:20am, vs Texas Toxic
We dug ourselves a hole in the first and were unable to dig ourselves out of it in this one. They got 3 in the first on a hit batter, a couple of hits, and a couple of walks. We didn't score until the bottom of the 3rd when Haley and Rachel both doubled to get us on the board. They got 2 more in the top of the 4th thanks to a couple of hits, an error, and a sacrifice fly. We added another in the bottom half when Cox led off with a single and Bre came in as a courtesy runner. Sarah reached on an error and Dana singled to score Bre. Unfortunately, time ran out before we could score any more. Final score, 5-2.

SLAM GOES UNDEFEATED AT AFA QUALIFIER

Round Robin #1, Sat, Dec 8, 9:00am, vs Mystixx
After coming off of a 2-week break, it took a few innings for the offense to get into gear. Both teams were scoreless for the first three and a half innings. With 10 minutes left on the clock, the bats began to stir. Dana drove a ball into the right-center field gap only to get caught going into second. Stacie followed with a drive over the right-center fielder for a double. Courtney was hit by a pitch and Bre singled to left to load the bases. An errant pick-off attempt at 3rd allowed Stacie to score the only run that was needed. Alexis and Maryssa combined on a 3-hit shutout with Alexis striking out 5. Final score, 1-0.

Round Robin #2, Sat, Dec 8, 10:20am, vs Texas Jets
We started off the scoring in the bottom of the 1st when Cox walked. 2 wild pitches moved her to 3rd and Shelby ripped a singled to left to drive in the run. In the 3rd, they tied it up on a homer to left and added another run in the 4th. Once again we were coming up to bat with about 10 minutes left and, once again, it was time for the bats. Courtney led off with a double to left. Rachel singled to move her to 3rd. With two outs, while both teams were planning their strategy for the 1st-and-3rd situation, Maryssa came up and drove a shot over the left fielder's head for a 2-run double. That was all that we needed as Alexis and Shelby combined for a 2-hitter while Alexis struck out 5. Final score, 3-2.

Round Robin #3, Sat, Dec 8, 1:00pm, vs Lethal Weapon Red
In the 2nd inning, Courtney got us going with a homer to left. That seemed to spark a huge inning in the 3rd where we scored 10 runs on 10 hits. The entire lineup either got a hit or drove in a run. Haley got 2 hits in the inning, a single and a double and Bre had 2 singles. However, the biggest contributor of the inning was Dana who followed up her RBI single with a 3-run homer. They added 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd as time ran out. Maryssa went the distance scattering 3 hits. Final score, 11-2.

Round Robin #4, Sat, Dec 8, 3:40pm, vs Mystixx (DuBois)
A pitcher's duel for 3 innings until we started the scoring in the bottom of the 4th. Dana and Courtney led off with singles and Bre hit into a fielder's choice. With Courtney on 2nd and Bre on 1st, Maryssa came thru again with a 2-run single to left. We added one more in the 5th when Cox and Haley led off with singles. Shelby followed with a fielder's choice and Dana reached on an error to score Haley. Alexis pitched a 2-hit shutout to end the day with a 3-0 victory.

NAFA FALL STATE

Pool #1, Sat, Nov 17, 9:00am, vs Texas Connection
This game was a pitcher's duel all the way to the end. We got the first and only run of the game in the top of the first when Cox walked, then K.J. reached on a fielder's choice. After Shelby walked, 2 wild pitchess brought K.J. home. Shelby went the distance throwing a 1-hitter. Final score, 1-0.

Pool #2, Sat, Nov 17, 11:30am, vs Texas Shock
A bit more offense in this game and, like the first game, we jumped out to an early lead with 4 in the bottom of the first. Cox walked and K.J. hit a bunt single. Back-to-back walks to Stacie and Sarah scored Cox. Then Bre came up with a shot to the right-center field fence to clear the bases. They managed 3 runs in the 2nd on a couple of hits, a walk, and a fielder's choice. That would complete the scoring. Maryssa pitched the complete game scattering 4 hits for the win. Final score, 4-3.

Bracket #1, Sat, Nov 17, 2:00pm, vs Texas Starz
Once again, a big 1st inning did the trick. We scored 6 in the 1st with the big hits being doubles from Stacie, Shelby, and Haley. Also contributing was Cox reaching on an error and walking, singles from Sarah and Courtney, Bre's fielder's choice and Rachel's hit-by-pitch. The 2nd inning was more of the same as we pushed across 3 more runs. Stacie started it off with a double and Shelby reached on an infield single. Sarah's groundout moved them up a base so that Bre's and Courtney's singles each drove in runs. Shelby and Maryssa split duty and pitched a combined 1-hitter while striking out 4. Final score, a run-rule 9-0.

Bracket #2, Sat, Nov 17, 5:00pm, vs Texas Jets
After a scoreless 1st, we scored the first run in the 2nd when Sarah singled and went to 2nd on a wild pitch. Rachel and Haley walked to load the bases. Cox delivered a sacrifice fly to left to score Sarah. However, the Jets responded in the bottom of the 2nd courtesy of 4 walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a double. We answered in the top of the 3rd when Shelby took one for the team and Bre moved her up to 2nd on an infield single that was later overturned to a ground out on a controversial ruling. Courtney's single moved Shelby to 3rd and allowed Courtney to take 2nd on the play. Sarah's single to center scored Shelby. On the subsequent attempted steal of 2nd by Sarah, Courtney stole home. That would be all of the scoring as time was not on our side at the end of the game. Final score, 4-3.

Bracket #3, Sat, Nov 17, 6:30pm, vs Texas Shock
It started out as a pitcher's duel as it was scoreless thru 3 and a half innings. In the bottom of the 4th we started the scoring when Bre double to right center. Courtney followed up with a big triple to left center to score Bre. Sarah executed the suicide squeeze to score Courtney. The Shock's bats came alive in the 5th as they managed 4 runs on 3 hits, a walk, an error, and a sacrifice fly. With time expired, we mounted a comeback when Brittany started it off with an infield single and a steal of 2nd. Shelby singled to drive in Brittany and bring us within 1 run. Stacie singled to put the tying run on 2nd and the winning run on 1st. Unfortunately, that's where it ended. Final score, 4-3.

ELITE COLLEGE SHOWCASE (NOV)

Game #1, Sat, Nov 10, 9:30am, vs MC Elite (Hatfield)
Another good start of the tournament. 3 runs in the bottom of the first helped out a lot. Cox led off with a double to center. After K.J. took one for the team, Dana singled to load the bases. After Shelby reached on a fielder's choice, Sarah came up with a clutch double to drive in 2. A passed ball plated the 3rd run. We added 2 more in the 5th when Sarah singled and Haley walked. This time it was Bre's turn to come up with the clutch 2-run double. As it turned out, we needed those as Elite mounted a comeback in the top of the 6th, but Maryssa fanned the final batter with the bases loaded to clinch the victory. Alexis came away with the victory and Maryssa got the save. Final, 5-3.

Game #2, Sat, Nov 10, 2:00pm, vs Texas Travelers (Marks)
The 1st inning was good again as we jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Cox led off again with a double and moved to 3rd on a K.J. sacrifice bunt. After Dana reached on an error and stole 2nd, Shelby came thru with an RBI single. A well-executed double steal from 1st and 3rd scored Dana and moved Shelby to 2nd. Stacie's grounder moved Shelby to 3rd. That allowed Sarah's single to score Shelby. However, the Travelers fought back and came up with 1 in the 3rd and 2 more in the 5th to tie the game and that's the way it ended, 3-3. Shelby and Alexis combined to scatter 5 hits and allow just one earned run.

Game #3, Sat, Nov 10, 3:30pm, vs Texas Roughriders Gold
This was a back-and-forth battle that we managed to pull out at the end. The first scoring was in the bottom of the 2nd when Stacie led off with a single. Sarah laid down the sacrifice bunt and moved her to 2nd. Bre's single pushed Stacie to 3rd and a wild pitch plated Stacie and got Bre to 2nd. Courtney's ground out moved Bre to 3rd and Rachel's single scored Bre. However, they responded with 3 runs in the 3rd and took a 3-2 lead. In the 4th we tied it up when K.J. doubled to left center and took 3rd on a passed ball and a throwing error got her home. It stayed tied at 3 thru the 6th when time was out and we had our last bats. Alexis reached on an error and, with 3 consecutive singles from Cox, K.J., and Dana, we got the final run and the 4-3 win. Alexis went the distance and struck out 7 for her victory.

Game #4, Sat, Nov 10, 9:30pm, vs Texas Storm (Jones)
A well-played game on both sides and Storm batted just a little better. They got 2 in the top of the 3rd and we responded with 1. Bre doubled to the fence in right center. Courtney's sacrifice moved her to 3rd and an error got Bre home. Unfortunately, this was the only offense we could muster, so it was a 2-1 loss, despite strong pitching performances from Shelby and Alexis (3 hits, 4 strikeouts).

Game #5, Sun, Nov 11, 9:30am, vs Texas Elite (Kwasnick)
It could be that the long weekend caught up with us on Sunday as we came out flat in our Sunday morning game and Elite took advantage of it. A sloppy first inning spotted them a 4-run lead and they never looked back, scoring 6 more over the next 4 innings. We managed 3 runs as Shelby drove in Sarah (who walked) in the 1st. The 4th started with a Dana single, a Stacie fielder's choice, and Bre reaching on an error. Rachel drove a double to the fence in right center to drive in our last 2 runs. Final score, 10-3.

RONALD McDONALD

Game #1, Fri, Nov 2, 6:00pm, vs MC Elite (Sicotte)
We got off to a good start. After spotting Elite a run in the 1st, we answered with 2 in the top of the 2nd. Bre lead off reaching on an error. Sarah followed with a bunt single and Courtney sacrifice both runners up to 2nd and 3rd. Maryssa was next and drove in Bre with a single. Rachel followed with an RBI single of her own. After losing several runners on the basepaths, we opened it up in the 6th with a 5-run inning, highlighted by an RBI triple from Haley and a 3-run inside-the-park homer from Stacie. Shelby and Alexis combined on a 2-hitter with no earned runs and 7 strikeouts. Final, 7-1.

Game #2, Fri, Nov 2, 9:30pm, vs High Voltage Gold
Surprisingly, this was a high-scoring affair and we came out on the good end. They started off with 2 in the 1st and we responded with 2 in the bottom half. K.J. singled and stole 2nd and Dana advanced her to 3rd on a fly to center. Shelby singled and, after a single from Stacie, scored on a wild pitch. They got 2 more in the 2nd to take a 4-2 lead, but, once again, we came back with 4 more in the bottom of the 2nd. We got singles from Sarah, Maryssa, and K.J., walks from Courtney and Rachel and RBI groundouts from Alexis and Cox. Both teams added another run along the way, highlighted by a Courtney triple. Final score, 7-5.

Game #3, Sat, Nov 3, 3:00pm, vs Texas Blitz
Now was the time for our bats to do the talking. We put together a 13-hit attack with nearly every batter in the lineup contributing at least one hit. Cox went 2-for-4, Haley went 2-for-2 and a walk, and Maryssa was 2-for-3. Shelby, Alexis, and Maryssa scattered 4 hits and just 2 runs. Final score, 12-2.

Game #4, Sat, Nov 3, 8:15pm, vs Louisiana United
Maybe all of the hits were used in the last game, as we could only get 3 in this game, while they managed 6 hits. Shelby and Alexis combined for just 3 earned runs while striking out 5, but the offense wasn't there, so we went down 7-0.

Game #5, Sun, Nov 4, 9:30am, vs Texas Royals Gold
We were waiting for the bats to come back, but it didn't happen in this game. We only 4 hits with the high point in the 1st running when Dana doubled to center to score Cox who had led off with an infield single. Strong pitching was there again from Alexis and Maryssa, but it wasn't enough as we lost 3-1.

ELITE COLLEGE SHOWCASE (OCT)

Game #1, Sat, Oct 20, 9:30am, vs Texas Travelers (Marks)
Alexis and Shelby combined to allow just one earned run, but, unfortunately, that was enough as our bats never got started. Shelby managed our only hit and they pushed runs across in the 1st and 3rd to give them a 2-0 victory.

Game #2, Sat, Oct 20, 2:00pm, vs Texas Sox Gold
With some small ball, a little help from an error, and a 3-hit shutout from Shelby, we were able to bounce back with a 2-0 victory of our own. Both runs scored in the 1st when Brittany led off with a bunt single. Haley reached on an error and Brittany raced to 3rd, allowing Haley to take 2nd. A sacrifice bunt by Shelby scored Brittany and, on an error, Haley came around to score. No other scoring in the rest of the game resulted in the 2-0 final.

Game #3, Sat, Oct 20, 5:00pm, vs Texas Travelers (Beard)
After a scoreless 1st inning, the Travelers put together a 4-run 2nd inning on 3 hits, a walk, and an error. We answered with 2 in the bottom of the 3rd. Brittany started it off with a single and stole 2nd. Sarah singled her to 3rd and stole 2nd, and on the throw to 2nd, Brittany stole home. After Cox reached on an 11-pitch walk, Shelby hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Sarah. Alexis went 4 innings and Shelby 2 as they only allowed 2 earned runs, but it ended as a 6-2 loss.

Game #4, Sun, Oct 21, 8:00am, vs Oklahoma Sidewinders
Our pitching stayed strong and kept us in this game until our bats woke up a little at the end. They scored 1 in the 3rd and it was 1-0 until the bottom of the 6th with time out. Brittany hit a single and stole 2nd again and went to 3rd on Bre's single. After Bre took 2nd without a throw, Cox followed with a ground out to 3rd, scoring Brittany to tie the score. That was all that we would get, so it ended a 1-1 tie.

Game #5, Sun, Oct 21, 12:30pm, vs Kansas City Xtreme
We started off with a bang!!! Haley singled and stole 2nd. Shelby followed with a shot over the left field fence for a 2-run homer!! Unfortunately, they responded in the bottom of the 2nd with a 2-run shot of their own. The next inning, they found their groove and pounded out hits in a 4-run 3rd. But Shelby clamped down on them the rest of the way. In the 6th, we got something going when Brittany started it off by reaching 1st on an error. Haley followed with a single and Cox had a single to load the bases. Shelby drove a shot to left center that they were able to cut off and hold it to a 1-run single. But a fielder's choice and pop out ended the rally, so we went down 6-3.

STARS OVER TEXAS

Game #1, Sat, Oct 13, 8:00am, vs San Antonio Nightmare Red
A bit of a slow start for us as we got down 2-0 after two innings as Nightmare pieced together 4 hits for their 2 runs. It wasn't until the top of the 5th until we got started. Alexis led off with a walk and Rachel reached on a fielder's choice as Alexis was forced at 2nd. Cox singled to move Rachel to 2nd and a walk to Brittany loaded the bases. K.J. reached on a fielder's choice as Rachel was forced at home. Shelby then came up and helped herself out by driving in 2 runs with a single as time expired. Shelby scattered 5 hits and struck out 4. Final score, 2-2.

Game #2, Sat, Oct 13, 12:30pm, vs South Texas Varsity
A pitcher's duel all the way as Alexis and Maryssa combined on a 2-hit shoutout over 6 1/2 innings. In the 3rd Rachel led off with a walk and Haley sacrificed her to 2nd. Once again our pitcher came thru offensively as Maryssa singled to right-center to score Rachel for the lone run of the game. Final score, 1-0.

Game #3, Sat, Oct 13, 3:30pm, vs Texas Lite
Now it was time for the bats to come alive and it started early. After Brittany walked and stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on the throw, K.J. brought her in with a single. Shelby singled and Courtney followed with a shot over the left field fence for a 3-run homer. 3 more runs were added in the 3rd. Alexis reached 2nd on an error and Dana switched places with her with a double. Brittany walked (get used to that!). K.J. drove a single to right to score Alexis and move Britt to 3rd. Shelby got an RBI groundout to short to finish off our scoring. They did manage to put together 3 hits in the 3rd for 2 runs of their own, but that was all that Maryssa would allow and Shelby came in to strike out the side to finish it off. Final score, 7-2.

Game #4, Sat, Oct 13, 6:30pm, vs Cy-Fair Battz
Our 4th game of the day pitted us against Cy-Fair Battz and we got a good start once again. Britt walked and moved around to 3rd on a K.J. bunt single. A single from Shelby drove in 2 and Dana's double drove in Shelby to finish off the scoring in the 1st. The 4th inning got us another as Stacie drove a double to the right-center field fence and Cox drove her in with a single up the middle. The 5th inning gave us our final run when Britt singled (yes, not a walk!!) and K.J. singled her to 2nd. A fly to right by Shelby moved Britt to 3rd and a double steal got K.J. to 2nd with Britt crossing the plate. Shelby threw a 3-hit shutout for another good outing. Final score, 5-0.

Game #5, Sun, Oct 14, 11:00am, vs Cy-Fair Intruders Gold
The Intruders got off to an early start with a rare defensive breakdown on our part. After unearned runs in the 1st and 2nd, they pushed across 4 more (only 1 earned). Our offense did pretty well as we managed 7 hits with 4 of them coming in a 3-run 3rd inning. Britt led off with a bunt single and Rachel sacrificed her to 2nd. Shelby singled to center and Stacie flew out to right to advance Britt to 3rd. After Shelby moved to second, Dana reached on an error to score Britt and move Shelby to 3rd. A wild pitch scored Shelby and allowed Dana to get to 2nd. Courtney singled Dana to 3rd and Cox drove her in with a single. Unforturnately, that was all we could muster. Alexis did well by only allowing 5 hits and 1 unearned run, but the final score ended up 6-3.

BEKAH SMALTZ TOURNAMENT

Pool #1, Sat, Sep 15, 2:00pm, vs Texas Tornados
We got started off on the right foot for the opening game of the fall season. We jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st when Brittany led off with a bunt single and moved up to 2nd on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Staci drilled a shot to deep right center for a triple, scoring Brittany, then, on an error, Staci scored. We added another in the 3rd when Sarah walked and Alexis laid down a sacrifice bunt with Sarah hustling to 3rd. Maryssa got an RBI groundout to 3rd to end the scoring. Alexis struck out the side in the 1st and Shelby came on to pitch 3 no-hit innings striking out another 8 to complete the combined no-hitter. Final score, 3-0.

Pool #2, Sat, Sep 15, 3:15pm, vs Texas Jets 1
Another good showing which was started off by a run in the top of the 1st. Haley reached on a dropped third strike and went to 2nd on a wild pitch and to 3rd on a passed ball. Dana followed with an RBI single. In the 2nd, there were 3 more runs. Bre walked and went to 2nd on a wild pitch. Sarah walked and Alexis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. 2 wild pitches plated 2 more runners and Maryssa followed up with an RBI single. In the 4th, Shelby singled and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch and 3rd on a passed ball. Courtney (Cooooooxxxxx) was next and hit a single up the middle to score Shelby. This time Maryssa and Alexis combined on a 1-hitter with the other 12 batters being retired. Final score, 5-0.

Bracket #1, Sat, Sep 15, 7:30pm, vs Cy-Fair Battz
This was a hard fought game all the way to the end to open bracket play. No score after 2 innings, then Battz managed to put together 3 hits to score 2 runs in the 3rd. That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the 4th with time out. We had one last chance and, despite a comeback, fell a little short. Dana led off with a single. Shelby walked and Cox followed with a single to load the bases. After a pitching change, Haley came up and singled to center to score Dana and, on a controversial call, Shelby was called out at the plate. A fielder's choice ended the game with a 2-1 loss. Shelby scattered 4 hits and struck out 3 to take the tough loss.

Bracket #2, Sun, Sep 16, 9:00am, vs Turn 2
Our pitching dominated this game while the offense only managed to score 2 runs while getting runners on 5 hits, 5 walks, and 2 errors. One came across in the first when Courtney (Shaw) walked and Dana grounded out to move her to 2nd. Staci delivered an RBI double to score Courtney. In the 3rd, Dana led off with a double to right center. Staci moved her to 3rd on a ground out to the pitcher. Shelby reached on an error by the 3rd baseman, which allowed Dana to score. We left 10 runners on base, but the pitching bailed us out with Alexis and Maryssa combining on a 1-hitter. Final score, 2-0.

Bracket #3, Sun, Sep 16, 12:00pm, vs Texas Ice
Another good game with a lot of offense combined with stellar pitching. The first inning got started when Brittany led off with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt by K.J. to move her to 2nd. Staci came thru with an RBI single to score Brittany. The 2nd inning we started to break the game open with 3 more runs courtesy of 4 consecutive singles by Haley, Rachel, Brittany, and K.J. The hitting didn't stop in the 3rd with the first 5 batters reaching base (a Stacy double, Shelby single, Bre walk, Courtney single, and Haley walk). We left the bases loaded in the 5th. Maryssa, Alexis, and Shelby combined on a 1-hitter, but they did manage 3 runs due to a few walks and a couple of errors. Final score, 8-3.

Bracket #4, Sun, Sep 16, 1:30pm, vs Sugar Land Heat
Next we got to face off against our "home town" team ... Sugar Land Heat. They picked up a couple of runs in the bottom of the 1st after stringing together 3 hits. They added another in the 3rd on an error, a groundout, and an RBI single. We finally got on the board in the top of the 4th when Cox doubled, was moved to 3rd on a groundout by Bre, and scored on a single by Courtney. Down 3-1 in the last inning (5th), we mounted a comeback when Brittany led off with a single followed by a walk to K.J. Sarah laid down a bunt but, unfortunately, the ball hit her as she was getting out of the box for an out. Shelby came thru with a single to center to close it to 3-2, but a ground out followed to end the game and send us home. Final score, 3-2.
