Turkey Trot Champions
Texas Thunder Baseball claimed the Turkey Trot 14U USSSA Open Championship this past weekend in Desoto at Grimes Park.
The Thunder got off to a very slow start losing their 1st game in pool play after committing 7 errors in 3 innings against the Ft Worth Drillers.
Game 1 Ft Worth Drillers 7 Texas Thunder 2
The Thunder defense was way off in their first live action of the fall committing 7 errors in the 1st 3 innings. The Drillers took advantage of the 7 errors by adding 4 singles and 6 walks to move out to 7-0 lead in the 3rd inning before we put 2 runs across late.
Game 2 Texas Thunder 1 Texas Red Seams 0
The Thunder pitching and defense we flawless in game two. Stars of the game pitching were Cole Lanier, Brent Boiles, Jeremy Valadez and Colton Cromer. The Thunder scored their only run after Lawson King doubled and stole 3rd and then an error by the Seams pushed our 1 run across the plate.
Game 3 Texas Thunder 8 Chapparel Red 4
The Thunder offense finally roared to life in game 3 scoring 8 runs. The pitching was a little shaky in the first couple of innings by giving up 7 walks. then the pitching settled down and closed the door and the bats came to life in 3rd inning.
Hitting star was Colton going 3 for 3 with a Homer,Double and a single.
Game 4 Texas Thunder 6 Texas Heat 5
The Thunder escaped with a victory late in the game. Trailing 5-3 with 2 outs and nobody on base in the top of the 5th with time expired, the Thunder started their come back. Colton smashed a ball that the 2nd baseman couldn't handle and got on. He then stole 2nd, Brent struck out swinging but got on with a passed ball by the catcher Colton scored. Then Jeremy singled moved Brent to 3rd. Jeremy stole 2nd. Corey Dodd then gets after an error on the Heats 3rd baseman, Brent scores and Jeremy scores Texas Thunder 6 Heat 5. Corey steals 2nd, Lawson walks, Steven singles to left bases loaded 2 outs. Thats the way the top of the 5th ended Thunder 6 Heat 5. Bottom of the 5th the Heat are the home team so they get last at bats. Colton comes in to pitch throws 10 pitches strikes out 2 and Thunder win 6-5. Over a very talented Heat team that is mainly the Dallas Panthers from Spring 2006.
Game 5 Texas Thunder 11 Texas Drillers 3
The Thunder came into the Championship Game on a bit of a roll. With the Thunder the home team due to higher seeding the defense took the field. Cole started on the hill and in the 1st faced only 4 batters. Then the offense took over scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning in a cold cold game. Game temperatures had to be in the high 40's. We had a mental lapse and let down in the 4th inning when we commited 3 errors on the same play..allowing all 3 of the Drillers runs to score, un-earned.
