How are you going to train for your race goals?
Train With a Running Club!
Why:
- Motivation: There is no better
source of continuous motivation than the club relationship. As a club
you can share the trials and tribulations, you can give support and
will receive twice as much in return. Furthermore, a good coach can
provide the necessary jump-start beginners need and can provide
continuous pushing for experienced athletes who may be experiencing a
lull. “Getting started is important for beginners and keeping going is
a necessity for even experienced runners.”
-
System and Planning: The experienced runner and
your coach can provide you with the workouts necessary to achieve your
goals. They will also explain to you why they will help so that your
job is to just follow through. The burden of researching the vast
amount and variety of training plans available is taken off the runner.
“This frees the athlete to concentrate on the activity rather than the
planning of it. That provides better focus.”
-
3. Advice and feedback: Your coach as well as
experienced fellow teammates can provide you with advice based upon
experience and reassurance that your training is on-track. If problems
occur, we can provide you with troubleshooting. Many beginning and even
some experienced runners do not know about proper running form, and
your coach will be able to evaluate your stride and form. “A good coach
can suggest different types of training that may allow the plateaued
runner to climb upward to a new level of performance.”
-
Injury Prevention: We will monitor your progress with an
eye on preventing over training and fatigue. “A coach’s most important
role may be preventing over training, which leads to injury, which puts
you out of commission.”
- FUN: This is one of the most important
reasons to train with a team. The energy created by running in a group
is hard to describe. Many lifelong friendships are formed from running
groups. With Team NorthShore you will have the opportunity to meet
individuals of varying ages, lifestyles and backgrounds, but we will
all share the common interest of running for enjoyment.

About Coach Gill Schumaker
Coach Gill Schumaker: After more Than 20 years of running, of being an Ordinary Runner.
He hasn't won races, but he’s finished plenty of them. He doesn't have six-pack abs, but he doesn't have a jelly belly either. He’s not on a running poster at the local running store, but he still wears the sizes he wore in his early 20’s.
He started out getting injured and made a lot of mistakes, but he’s had the good fortune to run with a lot of good running partners. He’s learned from and been mentored by good coaches.
Ordinary Runner? Not any more!
He has also taken the time to become certified as a Running Coach by the Road Runners Clubs of America. And he keeps up on the latest science and technology of running to be able to run longer, stronger and faster.
Why? Because he knows that these days you won't get very far as a competitive runner, or even if you're running for fitness, without having some knowledge of various tools, race preparations, and training techniques that can enhance your performance.
Now he’s a Cutting-Edge Runner and Running Coach
He is a runner and a coach who understands which specific training practices work and why and he doesn't shy away from trying something new when the facts indicate it’s worth a try.
He has gone from fun runs to the love of marathoning. Just an ordinary runner like you,
But…
Due to the demands of the marathon distance, he became interested in ChiRunning after he noticed the toll the marathons were taking on his body. He knew that he stumbled upon the most exciting and revolutionary approach to running to hit the running community in years. It had him jumping up and down telling everybody about it, so he became a Certified ChiRunning and ChiWalking Instructor in June of 2006.
He knows that it will improve your running as well!
He is currently owner of NorthShore Fitness Coaching as a running and fitness coach in Wilmette Illinois.
