 Grand Rapids Marathon

October 18, 2009
Full Marathon

Barbara Jane ran this as her first ever marathon and finished.

The members of Team NorthShore Congratulates you on following your dreams, listening to your heart and finishing your first marathon.

First marathons are immensely challenging, even for the most naturally gifted runners.  Twenty-six point two miles is just a long way to go, no matter who you are.  The marathon tells you it will hurt you, that it will leave you demoralized and defeated in a lifeless heap on the roadside.  It says it can’t be done—not by you.  HA!  It taunts you.  In your dreams!

You, Barbara Jane, answered back with a resounding Oh, yes I can!  You were able to overcome a challenge of such proportions and you came away with benefits—in the form of confidence, self-respect and fearlessness—that never fade.

Thanks for having Gatorade on the race course again this year. . . . . . . . I won a bronze medal today which is a first for me in 12 years of running this race. . . . . . Stephanie Williams won a medal and Laura Moss did also. I think we were all third in our age groups but Stephanie might have been second. Peter Keller was there and I’m not sure how he did except that he was faster than me. Also, Laura Laura and David Ray were there as well as Adrian and Sherry.

TNS Runner enters another stage of "Runner", THE ATHLETE!

Six days ago he ran his first Boston Marathon and love every minute of the race.

If that wasn't enough for this runner, David Cahnman despite the rain, finished as the 2nd place male finisher and third place over all.

Hi everybody,

This is something I have to shout out to everybody. I ran the Cancer Wellness Center “Stepping up to Wellness 5K” this morning in the rain and finished with a 2nd place medal. Not 2nd place in my age group, I was the 2nd place male finisher. There were no age group awards in this race. As far as I
can remember, this is the first time I have won an award of any type in any sort of competition, athletic or otherwise. I was
actually leading the race for over a mile, running behind a bicycle, when a woman passed me wearing a Boston Marathon jacket from 2007. Yes, a woman beat all the guys in
this race. Later on, a guy passed me and he beat me by just a few seconds. I haven’t been able to see the online results yet.
Because it was so weird and enjoyable to be in the lead, I never looked at my watch the
entire race and just ran as fast as I could. As a result, I started out too fast and then
faded. I think I actually missed a PR by a couple seconds but I’m not sure. The only reason I ran this race was because I felt the Cancer Wellness Center deserved my
support, not because I needed to run a 5K 6 days after a marathon.

To the best of my knowledge, there were no Kenyans or Ethiopians running this race.

David

March Madness Half Marathon
March Madness  Sold out within 29 hours.
Cary IL
Date:March 15, 2009
Time: 8:35 AM
Distance: Half Marathon

Here's what David had to say about this race.

I think I was the only official member of Team NorthShore running the race today but Trail Bob was also there. He must have finished before me because he ran me in the last quarter mile or so. This was the best weather I think they’ve ever had for this race – 37 degrees and sunny at the start with no wind. I ran in a singlet and shorts but most runners wore long pants and shirts. For me it was a PR time of 1:40:45.8. My previous fastest half marathon was last year at the Chicago Distance Classic when I clocked 1:42:19. My previous best official time for March Madness was in 2006 when I ran 1:52:19.6 but last year I had an unofficial time of about 1:45.
