25th Annual West Coast Open
For the 7th year in a row, members of TeamJCSO traveled to Newport Oregon to compete in the prestigious West Coast Open. With 70 lifters, 200 on lookers, and blaring heavy metal music, the first session began at 9am on Saturday June 25th, 2005.
The team took only four lifters, and the pressure was on to perform up to the standards that had been set in previous years. With all four team members lifting on Sunday, they took the opportunity to watch some excellent lifters perform on the first day. Terry Wilson is a National level judge and spent Saturday judging the competitors.
Sunday morning arrived and the team entered the gym with high expectations. Jeff McGrath stepped on the platform owning eight state records in two divisions. He improved three of his State Records in the Squat, Bench Press and Total. He also took first place in his weight division.
Kevin Eller also holder of four State Records missed two attempts to improve his State record squat. He did however improve the records in the Bench Press, Deadlift and Total and took the First Place trophy for his weight class.
Terry Wilson, nursing a sore elbow missed two attempts to improve on his World Record Squat, but managed to lift well enough to improve on his World Record Total, set four State Records and take home the Best Master Lifter Trophy.
Eric Fox went back up a weight class in an effort to become the second team member to cross the 700 lb squat barrier. He did it in classic fashion. He set a Police World Record in the Squat, added four State Records and narrowly missed setting the World Record Total.
The team will be attempting to re-group and make an assault on more State and World Records in November. They also will be attempting to add to their ever growing team trophy case by having everyone healthy and ready.
