Dalzell-March 31,2007-. Approximately (100) 9 to 14-year-old boys and girls from Kershaw County, Sumter County, and Orangeburg County will compete March 31, 2007 at Hillcrest Middle School in the Sumter County running of the Hershey’s Track & Field Games. This is the 30th anniversary of this program, but the first for the Sumter County.
Winners in the Sumter County meet will advance to the district meet on Saturday, May 12. District meet winners will advance to the state final in June. State meet winners do not automatically advance to the North American final. They are entered into a regional pool and become eligible for selection to a Regional Team which will travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to compete in the North American Final, held Saturday, August 4, 2007. All regional winners will qualify for the North American Final Meet.
Events will include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 meter relay, standing long jump, and a softball throw.
The state/provincial sponsor of this program is George Lloyd. The local sponsor of this program is Sumter County Track & Field Club.
Hershey’s Track & Field Games is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship.
We will also have a special event for kids 6 to 8 years old. They can compete in the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, and standing long jump. These events are only for the local meet. They cannot advance to the state or district meet.
