INJURIES WRECK HAVOC ON EAGLES
Is there any way to explain it? When a coach looks down his bench and sees nothing but bare feet and casts... and his only options are to hope and pray that his walking wounded return sooner rather than later.
Clearly, the Eagles line up has been ravaged with injuries to the point where the team on the field including the postitions that the players are playing look foreign at best.
Last night, three starting midfielders played the roles of "goalkeeper", "stopper" and "sweeper". These are three of the most important positions on the field. 75% of the starting back four was missing and no goalkeeper but...
The Eagles still managed to find a way to win on their visit to Whitby by a final score of 4-2.
On top of the injuries to the girls on the sidelines, several players playing in the game were banged up, as well as one or two getting hurt last night. It seems as there is no end in sight sometimes.
Kudla however used this moment to shine in her best game of the season as she stepped up to defend well and distributed the ball well from the central defender position. Capitano had her most inspiring effort of the season as she showed more of what she is capable of. The best of that girl is yet to be seen.
The play of the game was in the first half when Currie brilliantly finished a long cross to he back post from Capitano. Currie volleyed it into the goal like a natural. It was one of those goals you might just see on a t.v. highlight reel!
The pitch was too small for this age group and fit for a 9 V 9 game and with the size of the girls now, it was more of a traffic jam than anything else. Sad really when you think about how many fields there are in Whitby to choose from.
Despite all the injuries, and the quality of play, the Eagles did what they had to do. That is all that is important for now.
Hang in there untill the wounded return and maybe, an opportunity for others to step up and shine. This is the adversity that this team must overcome now. They must be patient and see there way through out of this.
In the end... it will only make the Eagles stronger. That can't be very good news for the rest of the teams in the group.

EAGLES WIN FIRST LEAGUE GAME OF '08
In only their second league game of the season, the Toronto Eagles U-13 girls were victorious by a score of 3-1 v.s. the visiting Bradford Eagles.
In a game that Toronto dominated, the score could have been much worse with some better luck and finish. The wind played havoc with the game making it difficult to control the distance and speed of the ball on the turf.
All four goals were scored by Toronto as the ladies scored an own goal to give Bradford it's only goal and second shot on goal all game. This happened with seven minutes left to play.
Great game by Ferguson who was creative and controlled much of the midfield. Gutsy effort by Stork-Benes who returned from injury but played only fifteen minutes as she is still recovering from her knee injuries.
On a sad note, the Eagles lost midifielder Locke for an indefinite period of time as she broke her right ankle in the first half. The Eagles have not yet fielded a full lineup all season as injuries continue to take their toll. This will be a huge loss to the team in midfield where Locke had established herself as an imprtant peice of the puzzle.
Privitera too was carried out of the change room as she continues to play hurt. The Captain was again steady but not her usual self as she continues to struggle with injury.
Currie netted 3 goals completing her hatrick in the second half. Currie now has 4 goals in two league games and leads the team in scoring.
The team has been off for some time due to an unbalanced schedule, but will prepare for next weeks tilt against the Whitby Iroquois next Thursday evening. Now sitting in fourth place with 4 points but with two games in hand, the Toronto Eagles look to continue to make their move up the ladder. Projected to finish first in the division, it is strange when looking at the standings right now.
"It's actually a good thing" Coach Privitera stated. "The girls are in a much lower division than they should be in and maybe this will present itself as the challenge that keeps them going for the season".
So the climb back up the ladder began last night for the Coach and his crew, it's just a matter of time...

95 EAGLES GIRLS DINE WITH NATIONAL TEAM MEMBER AND OLYMPIAN RHIAN WILKINSON !!!
What a night!!!
The Ladies had dinner with Canada's very own Rhian Wilkinson on Friday, April 18th. Rhian, fresh off her trip to Mexico in which she, along with her Canadian teammates qualified for the up coming 2008 Olympics, made the time to come and have dinner with the Ladies.
The Staff was pleased to have both Rhian and her dad Kieth as they enlightened the squad with stories, adventures, and the National Program.
Rhian signed autographed postcards for the Ladies and handed the team a wonderful gift (a signed Team Canada Jersey by all the members of the National team) to be auctioned off as part of the Eagles auction fundraiser.
The girls were in awe of Rhian as one of Canada's hero's sat right there next to them... it is not every day you sit down to dinner with a sports celebrity!
On behalf of the Toronto Eagles U-13 Girls, the Parents, and Staff, we would like to thank Rhian Wilkinson and Kieth Wilkinson for a wonderful dream evening for our Squad. It will never be forgotten!
WIN GOLD RHIAN !!!

OSHAWA KICKS TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS !!!
In an incredible display of skill and power, the Toronto Eagles U-13 girls dominated the B group to win their 2008 opening tournament.
The Eagles overcame injuries, and emotions in facing two ex teammates both in the preliminary's and finals to win it all. The Eagles beat League rival West Rouge 7-0 in the Semi Final in dominating fashion. The Ladies scored two quick goals in the first five minutes instigatinig a seven goal outburst in a preview of what is to come in during league play. West Rouge was no match for the Eagles ball distribution and overall team speed.
The Final pitted the Ladies against Markham who they already beat in the preliminary's 1-0. This time, the Eagles were even more dominant exposing Markham's lack of defensive speed and had little difficulty neautralizing the Markham attack. Final score: 3-0 Eagles !!!
The Eagles gave the heavy wind to the favor of the Markham team in the first half. Even still, the Eagles managed several opportunities that they did not bury. Markham threatend the goal only once not being able to use the wind to their advantage. The Eagles defenders were too skilled, fast, and superior. There was no chance of any sustained pressure from Markham.
In the second half, it took the Eagles less than five minutes to open the scoring with Meg Currie converting a three way passing play and tucking in with such neat finish the ball behind the Markham keeper.
With a former teammate taking down Leane Capitano in the box, Leane converted the penalty putting the Eagles up 2-0. With the game in total control, Capitano added another beautiful goal coming off again, three wonderful passes to complete the scoring.
Defensively, there were no concerns. Zero concerns at all as the Eagles only gave up 1 goal the whole tournament.
With Simeoni, Privitera and Pianta playing with severe injuries, they still dominated the central area of the field. Even at 50%, they were too much for the Markham attack. Salsa-Fonseca and Sisson also were impressive at the back showing the depth that the Eagles have to rely on.
Josie Reed also turned in a magnificent tournament and has to have special mention as well for playing injured. Limping badly, she continued to distrubute and cross balls for her teammates until she could run no more.
Every player on the Eagles roster contributed in all departments. This was a complete team effort and there are many bumps and bruises to deal with however, this will be a team to be reckoned with for 2008.
CONGRATULATIONS GIRLS !!!

WEST NIAGARA TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS !!!
The Toronto Eagles U-13 Girls team are West Niagara Tournament Champions! For the second weekend in a row, the girls managed to will their way to victory as injuries mount.
After a sloppy Quarter Final against Richmond Hill, the girls showed heart and passion in the Semi Final and Finals in beating Pickering and Milton.
After playing the preliminary and Quarter Finals on suspect fields, the girls took full advantage of the larger and smoother playing surfaces in the Semi Final and Finals. All aspects of the game came together at the right time. Defensively shutting down the speed of the Milton attack and winning the middle of the park sparked numerous counter attacks.
The striking tandem of Capitano and Currie seems to have come full circle as the girls fed well off eachother. The midfield was at it's best moving the ball quickly and switching the play from side to side with ease. Locke was clearly supplying the engergy that was missing in previous games to the midfield with energetic runs and heads up play both defensively and offensively.
The Eagles defenders were solid giving Milton very little in the way of opportunities, and making runs up field as well. For the second tournament in a row, this group of defenders allowed only one goal against.
Stork-Benes unable to play in her natural position due to injury was in goal and was terrific!
The Eagles have played many games over the past month and injuries have mounted however, it is the heart of the warrior in these girls that make them special.
What a fantastic way to kick off a season by winning two tournaments in consecutive fashion and beating teams that are above them in level of play. Clearly the team is deeper and stronger than last season. The team has never fielded the same starting line up in any game, and have the ability to move players into multiple positions.
The team can adjust to any style of game the opposition throws at them and showing the strength of a deep bench. All the players were contributors in winning the two titles.
The team is far from being the squad it can be but, clearly, the early indication is that they will have something to say on a greater scale come mid season.
The team would like to thank all the Parents for their never ending support. We will do something special for you yet!

Eagles Take On Defending Ontario Cup Champs in Friendly
In an attempt to keep sharp and play stronger competition, the Toronto Eagles U-13 girls found their way down the QEW to Oakville to play the defending Ontario Cup Champions, The Oakville Hurricanes.
The game saw the Eagles start very strong scoring a beautiful goal by Currie, off a great feed from Capitano. Sent in all alone by Capitano, Currie calmly slid the ball past the challenging Oakville goalkeeper tucking it into the far right corner. It was a classic Currie like finish!
The Eagles seemed to gain momentum from this and were able to carry the play until a suspect call for a penalty kick was called giving Oakville the equalizer. This seemed to calm the Oakville team down and they began to play their game, while the Eagles seemed a little rattled by the call. 1-1 at the half.
The Oakville team had a very short bench but the Eagles, although sporting a big bench, had only the use of a couple of players due to injury and the flu bug.
The second half was a fairly even affair although the Oakville side did show more maturity, patience, and experience with the ball. With Oakville going up 2-1 halfway through the second half (on a tremendous strike), the Eagles fought hard to find the equalizer with at least five chances on one particular play, but no player could seem to get the strike off to finish.
In all, the Eagles were both happy and dissapointed. Happy to say they have the ability to compete with the top teams, but came away dissapointed in not delivering the performance they had envisioned. However, much can be learned from playing these teams and it is important to come away from such matches hungry to improve on such a result.
It is safe to say that the Eagles are clearly a team on the way up the ladder and doing it very quickly. They are a team to be reckond with and appear to have the attention of many.
"We do not want to peak too soon... we just need to peak when the time is right. It's not holding back... it's called timing! And we will be there when the time is right."

Where Were The Real Eagles ???
If it was not the most horrible effort given by this squad to date, it was very close.
The ladies were non existant on this night and looked disinterested in the contest against the visiting Pickering Gators. Clearly, the early season success has swollen some egos and this game was a quick reminder to every player that the ball is round and NO team is to be taken lightly.
Even so... the Pickering goalkeeper stole the show by making at least four incredible stops during the game.
Both Pickering goals came off free kicks in the first half. Other than that, the Gators could not muster any offence but it was the Eagles who played into the hands of the visitors style of play and frustration was the word of the night.
In four previous meetings the Eagles have outscored the Gators by a 20 goal margin however, on this night it was not meant to be.
Sometimes a team needs a reality check and luckily the game ended 2-2. The Eagles will pay a visit later this summer to Pickering to avenge the loss you can be sure.
It is a guarantee (you read it here now) that the Eagles will win that game by at least five goals !!!
Consider that date circled in the minds of every Eagle player.
On a final note... the Eagles who have been without a goalkeeper, may soon have a new addition to their nest!
Stay tuned!!!
