Fall Season Leftovers
Despite getting off to a slow start, Tri-County rattled off 10 straight wins -- nine in the Greater New Haven Baseball League -- to finish the season with a 13-6-1 overall record. Final stats have been updated and can be accessed by clicking here. A couple of notes:

  • We will likely be having a field cleanup day at West Road sometime in early November (likely Nov. 7 or 8). We will send out a note when we know more details. It will count toward community service hours.

  • Remember that the winter is your best chance of improving parts of your game. See down below for some basic dos and don'ts of your offseason workouts.

  • If you or any high school teammates have any questions about the Summer Legion program, or think you might be interested in being considered for a spot, make sure and communicate that with us by the early spring so we can get out to see you. There are seven players off last summer's team who are no longer age-eligible and that has created some holes at certain positions.

  • Watch the website and your email for updates over the winter. We'll be trying to organize a couple of fundraisers in the hopes of putting together a summer trip. More details on that to come, as well.

Four T-C Players Walk On To College Teams
Four players from the 2009 Tri-County summer Legion team made their college teams as walk-ons this fall. Right-handed pitcher Joe Bender (Lebanon/Western New England), right-handed pitcher Evan Chamberlain (Hebron/Eastern Connecticut State), catcher Beriah Smith (Lebanon/Catholic U.) and second baseman Alex Soucy (Marlborough/Quinnipiac) all survived tryouts at their schools and are in line to be rostered players during the spring 2010 season.

Chamberlain and Smith played three summers with Tri-County, Bender played two seasons and Soucy one. Chamberlain, Smith and Soucy were Zone 7 All-Stars last summer.

This spring, they'll join five other former Tri-County players competing at the college level: sophomore right-handed pitcher Mark DiTommaso (Hebron/Western New England), junior left-handed pitcher Matt Fitton (Lebanon/Sacred Heart), senior outfielder/DH Matt Grosso (Marlborough/Notre Dame), senior right-handed pitcher Jeff Raymond (Marlborough/Keene State) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Sean Scanlon (Lebanon/Roger Williams).

See the bottom of the page for a complete listing of recent college players with T-C ties.

    Offseason Workouts: Have a Plan!
Whether you own a "Baseball Players Are Made in the Offseason" t-shirt or not, the fact remains that what you do in the next few months will help determine how you do when spring rolls around. Not just how you perform on the field, but also how your body feels and, quite possibly, how healthy and injury-free you stay. Now that the fall season is over, everyone should get with your school coaches/trainers to develop an off-season plan that works for you. But while philosophies vary regarding length of rest at the start of the offseason, how much pitchers should throw over the winter, etc., there are some basic do's and don'ts that are relatively universal:

    DOs ....
  • Do work on your foundational strength, with a medicine-ball workout to target your trunk, your baseball core.
  • Do some simple refinement of your mechanics:
           - Hitters, even 10 quality dry swings each day will help
           - Infielders, play short-hop catch against a wall
           - Catchers, work on framing by catching racquetballs bare-handed
  • Do work in front of the mirror (pitchers on delivery and hitters on swing)
  • Do your running, both distance (2-mile jogs) and sprints. Your footwork and general speed can improve greatly.
  • Do simple rotator cuff exercises, but don't use more than a couple pounds. All players, not just pitchers.
  • Do a combination of activities, in different combinations of sets and repetitions.
  • Do plenty of wrist curls to build strengthen both your wrists and forearms.
  • Do use wood bats when taking offseason BP.
  • Do your long tossing when possible.

    DON'Ts ....
  • Don't just work on strength; speed, agility, and conditioning are important, too.
  • Don't make weightlifting a trade-off for not working on baseball skills.
  • Don't press with heavy weights, as it adds too much stress on your shoulders.
  • Don't obsess over one area of your body. Remember, baseball is a game of balance and we don't want you out-of-whack.
  • Don't forget to stretch your arms after workouts so as not to lose important flexibility.
  • Don't start the offseason without a plan; make yourself a workout chart and stick to it.
  • Don't over-do anything.

T-C Players Honored After Successful Summer Season
Tri-County's Mark DiTommaso was named the American Legion Zone 7 Pitcher of the Year in voting of coaches. A Pitcher of the Year finalist last summer, DiTommaso was the near-unanimous choice of zone coaches after putting up a 7-2 record with one save and a 0.90 ERA in 10 zone appearances. DiTommaso was also the runner-up for Zone 7 Player of the Year, which went to RCP catcher Dan Hickey.

DiTommaso was also selected by Zone 7 coaches to start at third base for the Zone 7/East All-Star team, making him one of three T-C starters, along with Evan Chamberlain (outfield) and Alex Soucy (second base). In addition, Zone 7 coaches voted four T-C players as All-Star reserves: Eric Brainard (outfield), Tyler Pogmore (shortstop), Tyler Repoli (pitcher) and Beriah Smith (catcher).

Also, pitcher/infielder Gregg Kirkpatrick was named a Zone 7 Sportsmanship Award recipient and was recognized along with other sportsmanship winners prior to the Zone 7/East-West All-Star Game.

The West team defeated the East 4-1 in the nine-inning game on July 30 at Riverfront Park in Glastonbury. DiTommaso and Pogmore both had hits for the East team and DiTommaso pitched two scoreless innings.

T-C Alumni Report: Pollock Goes In First Round To D-backs
  • Notre Dame junior A.J. Pollock (Hebron/Marlborough) was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 17th overall pick in the major league draft on June 9. Pollock, who played three summers with the Tri-County American Legion team under his father, Al Pollock, and Al Garray, was the first Connecticut native selected in the first round since Norwalk's Pete Tucci (31st pick, 1996, Toronto). A centerfielder, Pollock was named to the all-Big East first team for the second consecutive season in 2009, finishing with a team-high average of .365, the third consecutive season he has been the Irish's leading hitter. He led the team in numerous other offensive categories, as well, including OBP (.443), runs (69), hits (88), doubles (19), triples (5) and stolen bases (21 in 25 attempts).

As a shortstop with the T-C Legion team (then known as Legion East), Pollock was the youngest player selected for 2003 Legion "Futures Game" (.418 in 46 games). He followed that up with back-to-back All-Star selections in Zone 7, batting .472 in 44 games in 2004 and .464 in 43 games in 2005, when he was also a recipient of the Zone 7 Sportsmanship Award.
