Comets Advance to USYSA Region I Summer League Finals
The Comets finished their final Region I summer league preliminary match this weekend against the Albertson Fury ’89. The Comets midfield and defense did an excellent job in cutting down scoring opportunities and working to set up scoring opportunities for the Comets offense. Despite some great attempts, the Comets offense was unable to overcome a fast and tough Fury defense and keeper to score. In the end the Fury scored the lone goal of the match, which was enough for the win. The Comets finished the preliminary matches with a 4-2-1 record, which was sufficient to qualify the Comets to advance to the Directors Cup Summer League Finals in Kirkwood, Delaware on Saturday, July 24th. The Comets are scheduled to compete against the Freestate Shooters, 2004 National Championship Series Region I Finalist and Maryland State Cup Champions. The Comets advanced to the Region I Summer League Semi Finals in 2003 but failed to advance to the finals due to a close 1-2 loss to the DC United select team in over time.

July 10th Region 1 Game Highlights
The Comets suffered an embarrassing loss in Saturday’s Region I match against an excellent Freestate Shooters team, 2004 National Championship Series Region I Finalist. Despite formation changes designed to strengthen the Comets’ back line against a strong, attacking Freestate team, the Comets’ defense was unable to shutdown Freestate’s offense who recorded numerous shots on goal. The Comets midfield worked hard to provide the offense with scoring opportunities, but a strong Freestate defense limited access to the box. The Comets did have an excellent cross and finish for their lone goal of the game and had additional scoring opportunities that they just weren’t able to finish or capitalize upon for additional goals. The Comets appreciate the many guest players who filled in the gaps left by missing Comets players who were away at various camps-- thanks girls for your help. The Comets will be working hard during the coming week to prepare for their final Region I Summer League preliminary match next weekend against the Albertson Fury ’89.

June 26th & 27th Region 1 Game Highlights
The Comets finished their first series of Region 1 Directors Cup Summer League games with a 2-0-1 record. The Comets’ first match was played on Saturday against this year’s Massachusetts State Cup Semi Finalist, Western United Bombers. The Comets took the lead late in the first half with an excellent cross from the corner to an open Comet offensive player who beat the keeper with a one-touch finish to the near post. The Comets worked hard for the win defending against a tough Bomber team who were unable to score against a solid Comets’ defense. Saturday’s second match was against the Washington Freedom select team. A skilled and fast Freedom team pounded at the Comets’ net for most of the first half but failed to overcome the Comets’ defense to come up with a goal leading to a scoreless first half. The Comets came onto the field in the second half determined to score. They played a controlled passing game and early in the second half a Comets’ offensive player beat the Freedom defense for a breakaway to the goal. When challenged by a strong Freedom keeper, the Comets’ offensive player pulled back on the ball as the Freedom keeper committed to the ground and was able to move past the keeper to shoot on an open net. The score remained 1-0 in the Comets’ favor until late in the second half when a clean tackle by a Freedom forward just outside the box allowed the Freedom to fire at the Comets’ net for their tying goal of the match. The Comets played their final match of the series on Sunday morning against the Virginia Rush. The Rush worked hard but were outplayed this weekend. The Comets applaud their effort and wish them well in their remaining games.

24th Annual JAGS Tournament Game Highlights
The Comets played three excellent MAPS teams in the Premier Bracket of the 24th Annual JAGS Tournament for a 1-1-1 finish. The Comets started the weekend with a 2-1 victory over the Wyckoff Torpedoes. An excellent finish on a rebound off of a shot on goal gave the Comets the lead in the first half. Halfway into the second half the Comets scored a second goal off of an excellent cross and finish over the keeper’s head. The Torpedoes worked hard to score against the Comets and in the final minutes of play managed to finish a rebound from the Comets' goal for their lone goal of the match. Early in the afternoon, the Comets competed against a solid Pasco Stallions team that went on to advance to the Premier Bracket Finals. The Comets worked hard throughout the match but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The Stallions earned their first goal late in the first half on a cross to an open offender who chested the crossed ball to the far post and racked up their second goal in the final 10 minutes of play on a corner kick when a mad scramble ensued inside the box. The final match of the tournament ended scoreless with 10 minutes left to play when an FC Bucks Blaze defender suffered a serious injury. The Comets wish the Blaze player a speedy recovery and look forward to playing the Blaze again in the future.

The Comets are pleased to welcome Assistant Coach, Greg Ruttler to the Comets' family. Greg is a talented soccer professional who comes to the Comets with a robust soccer resume. At nationally ranked Richard Stockton College, Greg was a standout. In his Senior year he was the top scorer for the Ospreys and helped lead the team to winning the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship. Most recently Greg was named head coach for the Paul VI Varsity Girls Soccer Team beginning the Fall of 2004. The Comets are excited to have Greg serve as a member of the team's excellent coaching staff.

Comets Have Great Showing at 25th Annual Potomac Tournmnt
The Comets went undefeated in the preliminary round of play at the 25th Annual Potomac Memorial Tournament against some excellent competition to advance to the tournament semi-finals. The soccer was great, but this year’s tournament should have been nicknamed the Cicada Festival as the woods and fields were buzzing with Cicada who were above ground for the first time in 17 years. Many of the shouts and screams heard throughout the event were from players, coaches and fans swatting at the Cicada or brushing them off their clothing.
Saturday’s first preliminary match against last year’s Virginia Snicker’s State Cup and Region I Champion Sterling Elite was a win for the Comets who scored two excellent goals to the Elite’s one. The Comets’ midfield worked hard to set up plays leading to scoring opportunities for the Comets’ forwards. An excellent through ball past the Elite’s defense led to a cross by a Comet forward to a one touch finish for the first goal of the game 20 seconds into the 2nd half of the match. This was later followed by another excellent cross to an open offender who finished for the winning goal of the game. Sterling Elite’s lone goal came in the first half of play on a cross from the goal line and finish at the far post, but the Comets’ defense worked hard the remainder of the game to limit scoring opportunities that allowed the Comets to walk away with the win.
Later in the day the Comets played a fast and physical West Chester United Spartans (Fall 2003 PAGS Cup Division Champion) for a 2-2 tie. The play was physical and the Comets scored their first goal on a PK assigned when a Comet was taken down in the Spartans' box. The Comets had a number of scoring opportunities that they were unable to capitalize upon but did score the tying goal late in the second half on an excellent cross and finish. The Spartans scored on a corner and a cross and finish for their two goals against the Comets. Again the Comets worked hard to maintain possession and defend against the Spartans' offense.
The Comets' final preliminary match on Sunday was a 4-0 win against the Bethesda Pride who worked hard the entire game but was outplayed by the Comets.
The Comets were excited to advance to the Semi-final round later that day and to be able to play at the state-of-the-art Maryland SoccerPlex. This complex has some of the finest fields that the Comets have ever seen, and the air of excitement emanating from the teams and fans led to a sense of heightened anticipation for the match against the Albertson Fury ’89 (NY East Snicker’s State Cup and Jefferson Premier Bracket Semi-Finalists). The Comets worked hard to maintain possession and set up scoring opportunities but unfortunately were beaten by a solid and fast Fury team who advanced to the tournament finals where they lost to the Freestate Shooters.

May 23rd JAGS Game Highlights
The Comets finished their final JAGS league game with a solid 2-0 win against Trumbull Express (CT). The Comets played a solid, controlled passing game in the sweltering heat against a tough Express team. The Comets’ defense did a great job in cutting down on scoring opportunities and some big saves in net led to the shutout. The Comets’ midfield and offense did an excellent job in moving the ball and creating scoring opportunities and worked well together to come up with two big goals against a tough Trumbull sweeper and defense. Today’s finish gave the Comets the best overall record for the season in JAGS Group III.
Sunday, May 16
May 16th JAGS Game Highlights
The Comets cooled the Red Hots down today. The sun was hot, the soccer solid and both teams fought hard for the win. The Comets had a number of good shots on net that were saved through a strong performance by the Somerset Hills Red Hots’ keeper and several missed opportunities that could have made for a wider point spread. An excellent goal achieved by the Comets' offense working hard for the goal was called a no goal when the official failed to observe a Red Hots defensive player inside the goal clear the ball back across the goal line, but in the end an excellent cross and one-touch finish by the Comets’ offense and a strong performance by the Comets' defense and midfield clinched the 1-0 win.

May 14th JAGS Game Highlights
The Comets played an old SJGSL Olympic Division rival, the Voorhees Wildcats, in a strongly contested JAGS game on Friday evening. The soccer was physical and fast, with both teams exhibiting diverse styles of play. In the end the Comets prevailed and came up with the win in front of many local fans of these two highly competitive teams. Thanks to the Wildcats for the good game, it was fun to play you once again.

YMS EPIC Tournament Highlights
The Comets played good soccer and finished second in their group in the Premier Bracket behind the Premier Bracket U14G Champion, FC Bucks Blaze. The Comets started off the weekend with a tie against the Bucks-Montgomery Force only to fall later in the day to FC Bucks Blaze. On Sunday, the Comets came back strong and played an excellent passing game to come up with a big win against the Southampton Sting. To Toni, the Comets are pulling for your recovery from this weekend’s tournament injury and are looking forward to having you back on the field next Spring.
Sunday, May 2
May 2nd JAGS Game Highlights
The Comets allowed themselves to be beat in a game of long ball this past weekend against Battle of Monmouth. Despite an excellent mid-field run and pass to the forward line that took the ball to the net to score on BOM, the Comets made errors that allowed for scoring opportunities on which BOM was quick to capitalize finding the upper 90 and top of the net for their two goals against. The Comets’ will be working to address these errors in team training over the coming week.

April 24th Region 1 Game Highlights
The Comets elected to finish their final Region 1 matches of the season in Pittsburgh against the Beadling Blast (2002 & 2003 PA West State Cup Champions) and Penns Forest Los Lobos (2003 PA West State Cup Finalists) on a forfeit basis so that the non-eligible Region 1 Comets players could have the opportunity to play in these final Region 1 games. The first match against the Blast was a solid, good game of soccer. The pace was fast, the game was physical and all-around good soccer was played. The Comets midfield did an excellent job in maintaining possession for most of the game and defense did a good job in holding down scoring opportunities. A couple of big saves in net allowed for a close offensive goal score. The Comets’ lone goal of the match was scored on an excellent cross and one-touch finish. Beadling scored two offensive goals on crosses and one-touch finishes to the far post and on a PK in the second half. In the Comets second match, they were outplayed in a fast, direct game by the Penns Forest Los Lobos. Maybe the wonderful between-game spread contributed to the Comets’ slow pace in this second match, but the generous meal-time display was much appreciated, and the Comets thank the Los Lobos and Blast parents for their warm hospitality.

The Comets played back-to-back Region I games against the Vincent United Wildcats (2003 EPA Snickers State Cup Champion and Region 1 Finalist) and PSC Coppa (2003 PAGS Premier Champions). The games were fast paced and physical and the Comets appreciated the opportunity of playing against these well-respected teams. With three Region I games left to play, the Comets are being challenged and stretched by playing some of the top premier teams in the region with a limited roster. The experience will serve them well in their overall team development and will help to advance their level of play.

March 13-14th Weekend Highlights
The Comets started the Spring season with two Region 1 games against the Bethesda SC Rapids and MD State Champion Freestate Shooters. Due to a series of Comets injuries coupled with a restriction prohibiting the three newest Comets players from playing in Region 1, the girls played short six players for both games, but despite this obstacle and the frigid temperature and winds, they hung tough and came to play these two excellent teams. Unfortunately the day ended in two disappointing losses for the Comets, but cars full of proud parents who respected the girls’ determination to play under such difficult circumstances.
Sunday’s JAGS match against Spirit United (their 1st of 2 matches) saw a battered Comets team still down five players, competing in a hard fought match against a determined Spirit team. The girls played tough and in the end the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Saturday, March 13

The Comets are happy to have Kaitlin, Lauren and Allegra as part of the team. Welcome girls!

Highlights from the Bethesda Tournament
The Comets went 1-1-1 at Bethesda. Their first match was against the Laurel Comets (MD). The TBAA Comets controlled the game and dominated play, but despite numerous shots on goal, the TBAA Comets were unable to beat an excellent Laurel Comets GK (National ODP player). The game ended in a 0-0 tie with several of the Laurel Comets’ parents coming up to say what a good team the TBAA Comets is and how glad they were to have survived the match. The Laurel Comets are a nice group of girls that have a nice group of parents. It was a pleasure to wish them well in their remaining games.
The Comets second match was against the Charles River United Blue Thunder (MA) whom they were slated to play in Region 1 this past summer but never did due to the Thunder withdrawing from the league. The two teams were evenly matched and most of the game was played in the mid-field where the two teams battled for control. The Comets scored on an excellent cross and shot just outside the box, but were disappointed to have it called a no goal because a bounce off a Comets player’s hip was called a hand ball. In the end a good cross in the box to an open striker gave Charles River the 1-0 win against TBAA.
The Comets final match on Sunday was against a local JAGS team, the Radnor Rockets (PA). The Comets controlled the game and dominated play in this physical match. In the end the Comets overcame a strong Rockets defense to score on a rebound off the Rockets’ cross bar from just outside the box for a 1-0 win.
Many thanks to Kaitlin for donning orange and black this weekend. It was great having you play with the Comets once again.

November 8 & 9 Weekend Highlights
The Comets played two league make-up games in the unseasonably cold weather this weekend. Saturday’s game against the Montgomery Rowdies was a hard fought, physical match. The Comets controlled the play and had more shots on net, but the Rowdies defense and GK did a great job in cutting down scoring opportunities and making saves. The Comets had an excellent cross and finish for their lone score of the game, but in the end this wasn’t enough to match the Rowdies’ two goals against. The Comets are looking forward to playing the Rowdies again in the Spring.
Sunday’s match against the Somerset Hills Red Hots ended up being a night game due to a field delay that led to the game starting after 4 o’clock. The only problem was that the game was being played on a field with no lights. By the start of the 2nd half, it was dusky and 20 minutes into the 2nd half it was impossible to distinguish what was happening 20 yards out. The ref finally called the game after the Comets' lead had expanded to four goals and the Red Hots’ coach requested that the ref call the game. The Comets are looking forward to playing a noon game against the Red Hots in the Spring.
Monday, November 3
Comets vs. GAK Game Highlights
The Comets played an excellent game of soccer this past weekend in a MAPS cross-over game against the GAK Jersey Girls. The Comets played a fast, controlled passing game and worked as a team to score two goals to GAK's one. In the second half when the play became more physical, the Comets stayed hard on the ball and used speed and individual ball skill to maintain posession against a solid GAK team. Welcome back to Leigha; nice to see you in the net. Thanks to GAK for the excellent play. It was nice to play the Jersey Girls again after so many years.

October 18 & 19 Weekend Highlights
The Comets were disappointed for failing to advance to the quarterfinals of the NJ Snicker’s State Cup due to loosing this weekend’s state cup match to the Manalapan Shooting Stars. The Comets wish the Shooting Stars well as they advance to the next round of play.
The Comets bounced back to play two matches on Sunday. The first was a MAPS scrimmage at Mt. Laurel with the Connecticut Snicker’s State Cup Champion South Central Freedom. The Comets played well against a skilled Freedom team but were unable to overcome a solid Freedom defense. In the end a Freedom cross and finish led to a 0-1 loss for the Comets. The Comets thank South Central Freedom for the excellent play.
Sunday evening, the Comets traveled to Hibernia to play the Heat in a league match under the lights. The Comets played a good passing game and came up with a 3-0 win.
Monday, October 13
WAGS Tournament Highlights
The Comets played excellent competition in the prestigious WAGS Columbus Day Tournament. The teams in the B Flight where the Comets were slated to play were so closely matched that with the exception of one game, every game in the entire flight was either a no goal differential or decided by a one-goal differential. Every game was a hard fought match and no team walked away having lost as a result of competing in this top tournament. The Comets finished the tournament with an 0-3 record in Group C where the deciding matches were the last games played by all four teams. The results of which would decide if the group would have a three-way tie with equal bonus points needing to be decided by PKs among three teams or a victor by the only team to win two games at that point—the Dallas Inter 90 Blue. In the end, Dallas won their final match against the Freestate Shooters 1-0 to advance to the B Flight semi-finals.
The Comets thank the Dallas Inter 90 Blue (North Texas), Freestate Shooters (Maryland) and W-S Lady Twins White (North Carolina) with whom they competed for the great matches and the WAGS Tournament Committee for the hard work in setting up this event. The Comets extend special thanks to Carlea for playing with the team over the weekend.
Sunday, October 5
Comets vs. Wyckoff Game Highlights
A sleepy Comets team coming off a hard fought Snicker’s State Cup win on Saturday allowed the Wyckoff Torpedoes to beat them to the ball and win the match 2-0. The Comets know that they need to work harder and will be on the pitch preparing for next weekend’s WAGS Tournament.
Saturday, October 4
TBAA Comets Advance to 2nd Round of NJ Snicker’s State Cup
The TBAA Comets downed the Medford Strikers Xtreme in a hard fought match to advance to the 2nd Round of play in the Snicker’s State Cup. The Comets look forward to the next round match against the Manalapan Shooting Stars.
Sunday, September 28
Comets Win Scrimmage Against Parsippany Storm
The Comets played a fast, controlled possession game against the Parsippany Storm (former Long Valley Flames; last year’s NJ Snicker’s State Cup Semi-finalist) winning the scrimmage 2-1. The Comets dominated play and moved the ball well keeping the Storm off balance and running to keep up with the pace of play. A nice cross and pass back by the Comets’ offense led to the first goal of the match when that pass back was drilled into the upper left-hand corner of the net. The Storm returned the goal with a nice head ball on a rebound off the cross bar, but the Comets secured the win with a corner kick in the 2nd half that dropped behind the Storm’s GK on the goal line and bounced into the far side of the net. Excellent all around effort by the Comets brought about this well deserved win.

The Comets are looking forward to meeting the Express on the pitch for a rematch in the future.

Comets Win Against Hunterdon Sonics in 1st Fall Season Game
The Comets controlled the game and played well against a nice Hunterdon Sonic team winning 2-1 after 80 minutes of play. The Comets are looking forward to playing the Hunterdon Sonics again later in the season.

We enjoyed having you play.
