Two Space Coast Team Make BYSL Final

6/12/07

The Space Coast United Soccer Club was well represented in the BYSL Final Tournament this spring. Both of the u-10 girls team made it to the Championship game. One team was coached by Brett Restivo and their sister team was coached by Sue Fisher. The teams played a great game against one another.

Brett Restivo's girls u-10 team finished out their spring season with a record of 7-0-1. Entering the last game the girls were undefeated. The last game was called due to the weather. Thus ending in a 0-0 tie. With their record they were invited to play in the BYSL Final Tournament.

The BYSL invited the top two teams in the fall and the top two teams from the spring. The top teams from the fall were Sue Fisher's SCUSC team and Indialantic Force. The spring finalists were Brett Restivo's SCUSC Storm and the Melbourne Beach Tsunami.

Restivo's team played Melbourne Beach in their first game. Melbourne Beach jumped out to a 2 goal lead early in the game. They held their lead until the last six minutes of the game. Space Coast came out after the final water break and really turned up the heat on Melbourne Beach. As soon as they returned to the field SCUSC scored. A few more minutes passed and SCUSC scored on a beautiful corner kick. With time running out, SCUSC scored their third and winning goal to win their first round game.

Coach Restivo's team then played in the Championship game against the other SCUSC team., as they downed Indialantic Force 1-0 on penalty kicks. The Championship game was a barn burner. Both teams played well. It was a defensive game throughout the whole match. With less than one minute left Restivo's team scored on a shot just inside the center line for the only score of the game.

The teams have played each other several times throughout the season and in different tournaments. With Fisher's team winning the three previous match-ups. Restivo's team worked hard and had tremendous improvement during the season helping them to the undefeated record. With this win Restivo's team captured the BYSL Championship for the 2006-2007 season.

When asked about the season Restivo said " I knew we were a good team, but today you showed your parents, coaches and the rest of the BYSL league how good you really are." Restivo really emphasizes teamwork. " Through this year we have grown individually and as a team. You have shown soccer is a team sport and not individual sport. Throughout the season and today you have shown that you can overcome any obstacles or deficits that you are faced with. This is a sign of true Champions."
