  About us

Saturday, January 14

In a sport recognized as the "world's sport", soccer has been slow to catch on in the United States.  Or so they say.

Today, the sport is bigger than Little League baseball and football among the nation's youths, but becasue of its failures to lure a major market in this country, it is looked upon with disdain by many.

Fortunately, it is not looked upon as such in the South Jersey area.  With very competitive high school teams and the many strong competitive club programs in the area it has thrived.  For here, not only do boys and girls play it by the thousands. but men and women coach it with as much, or more passion as they do every other "major" sport.  In 1967, there was only a handful of schools in the area playing a "foreigner's sport".  But this handful of dedicated, enthusiastic coaches had a vision that some day their sport, which hardly anyone cared for in 1967, would bloom into the flower that we see before us.

The South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association over the years has recognized the outstanding coaches, players, officials and contributors for their efforts in advancing this great game.  It has given scholarships and held tournaments to further promote the game.  There was only one thing left that needed to be provided- a Hall of Fame.  Finally, in the fall of 1987, a committee, with Overbrook's George Henning chairing, was formed and the wheels were set in motion.

With the signing of incorporation papers in 1990, the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame opened its own bank account and stepped out of the S.J.S.C.A.  It has become and independent entity and a good one.  Its sole purpose is to promote soccer and honor those who have brought honor to South Jersey Soccer.

The inductees we honor each year compliment the strides encountered by many in the past.  The success of our World Cup teams in recent years , men and women,  are living proof that the efforts of these people has served a great purpose.  Their dedication and hard work have made our game the success it is today.  Many of these teams have been made up of players who were tutored on the fertile fields of Southern New Jersey.

There is still work to be completed.  Support is needed at all levels from its supporters and remember that in the future someone you know might be honored by the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame.  So lets give the future generations of coaches and players the support so richly deserved now, and their chance of being inducted becomes even greater.  In 2012 We will move into our new home.  It will be located inside TotalTurf Experience in Mantua NJ.  All of our previous inductees will be showcased on the walls alongside their indoor sports complex.

A special acknowlegement must go out to Mr. Charles Kellogg.  Mr. Kellogg served as past president and was a driving force in the preservation and improvements of the SJ Soccer Hall of Fame.  Charlie passed away this fall and will always be remembered for his contributions to the game of soccer and the many people he touched in his lifetime.
