Important Basketball Tryout Notice:   This year we have doubled up on tryouts (two age groups using the same gym time). As of the printing of this newsletter, we are unable to use our public school facilities until 12/1.  We have asked for a waiver allowing us to use these gyms starting 11/3, but have yet to hear back from the school district. Additionally, in order to keep any conflicts with soccer and football to a minimum, we have scheduled most of the tryouts for later in the day on Saturday and Sunday.  PLEASE NOTE that any weeknight tryouts scheduled on the back of this newsletter MAY CHANGE LOCATION. The coach will let you know after the first tryout. 

Age Policy and Reasoning:  Simply stated, a child must play in his/her age bracket. The reason for this policy is to maintain a competitive balance throughout the whole organization.  

Travel Basketball: “A” teams are selected by competitive tryouts; check the back of this newsletter for specific dates, times, and locations of your child’s tryout. Players are encouraged to attend all tryouts. 

 “B” Level Teams: As numbers dictate, we will place “B” teams in the NEPL for children 9 and up.  In order to properly assess the amount of teams we will have in each age group, all children must attend the “A” team tryouts. 

Intramural Basketball will begin the first week of January.  We will have programs for boys and girls 5-10 years of age. Please sign your child up any Saturday in November or December.  Coaches are always needed!  

Registration: for basketball will be held on Saturdays in November and December from 10am-12noon in the clubhouse.  All those not yet signed up with the club must register in order to play basketball.

July Spartan FREE Football Clinic: SYO Football will be holding its annual FREE Football Clinic for children 5-15 years old this July.  It will be conducted by the Archbishop Wood Coach Staff.  Dates & Times will be announced! Keep checking the SYO website!

START of PRACTICE FOR FOOTBALL and CHEERLEADING: The 1st practice for ALL SYO football teams will be on Monday July 28, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the SYO fields and we will place you on the appropriate team. Dates and times are the same for Cheerleading.

SYO Snack Bar: Thanks to all the volunteers who gave their time during the spring season. The snack bar depends on its volunteers to operate, so please contact Melanie O’Brien at 215-416-5392, melanieob@comcast.net, or stop by when it’s open to volunteer your time.

’08 FUN DAY:Thanks to all the families that braved the rain to take part in the Spring Family Fun Day on May 31^st.   In between the storms there was moon bouncing, football tossing, and much more!  The clouds parted just long enough for the adult softball game to be played.  Both teams were augmented with current Spartan Baseball stars. The World Team topped the Ryan Alumni by a score of 10-8.  It was a close game with all the old players showing they still had what it takes!  Fortunately no player needed medical assistance.  The Ryan Alumni Team looks forward to a rematch next year.SYO would like to thank all of its Family Fun Day sponsors:Sysco*Crown Cork & Seal*Wawa*The Philadelphia Phillies*PNC BankThe Blue Flames*Ampro Sports

Due to the high amount of children that participate in sports at SYO, the existing policy will be enforced to have ALL team members in ALL sports registered BEFORE uniforms are distributed. Uniform distribution will be done at SYO by appointment with the commissioner of the corresponding sport.

If payment for uniforms or registration causes a financial hardship, please discuss this with either Bob Weller or Maria Carroll at registration time or call for a private registration, ALL registration info stays confidential.

 TRAVELING SOFTBALLSoftball tryouts/placement clinics:  will take place on Sat. and Sun.  3/8, 3/9, 3/15, 3/16, 3/22, 3/23 . Please check below for location and times.  All Players 9 and up will be assigned to a traveling team in an “A” or “B” league.  Players must tryout for an “A” team before being assigned to a “B” team. There will be as many “B” teams as needed, based on the player numbers and coaches. The 7/8 year old teams will have tryouts and those players not making the team will be placed in the in-house program. For your convenience, there will be someone

available during tryout times to take registration in the clubhouse. Any softball questions call Mike Kelly 267-280-6865.
