Chasing the Cure
Every once in a while our children alert us to opportunities we had missed. This happened to me when my daughter, Angela, called me with some bad news and an opportunity to make a difference. Angela who is a student at Gonzaga University called to tell me about a friend who had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She wanted to do something to help her friend and asked me to help her raise money for cancer research. Angela decided we should run the San Francisco Half Marathon on July 26th as charity runners for the American Cancer Society. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to run with Angela and help her train for her first long distance run while supporting such a worthwhile cause.
Angela’s idea also caused me to remember the many people in my life who have been touched by cancer. My grandfather who died when I was in high school; my good friend and colleague who passed over 10 years ago; my Dad, who is a cancer survivor; my aunt, who is currently battling cancer in the fight of her life; as well as many other friends who have beaten or lost their struggles with this dreadful disease. Angela helped me to realize that I can use my gift of running to help fight this disease, while honoring all the people in my life who have been so affected by cancer.
I’m excited to join Angela and her boyfriend Matt as a charity runner for the American Cancer Society. Together we are trying to raise at least $4,500 in donations for cancer research. We are excited to train for and run 13.1 miles in July and would like to add you to Team Chasing a Cure, as donors to the American Cancer Society. Your donations will help us meet our fund raising goal while providing you a tax deduction. I’m sure you also have a list of people in your life who have been touched by cancer. Please use this opportunity to honor these people while helping fund important research.

PS Good news, Angela’s friend is doing well and was apparently misdiagnosed. His condition could lead to cancer, if left untreated, but for now he is cancer free.
