Becca Heteniak Named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Release: 04/27/2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul junior pitcher Becca Heteniak is the BIG EAST Conference Pitcher of the Week after finishing 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA for the Blue Demons, who are currently in first place in the league standings. Louisville junior catcher Melissa Roth is the BIG EAST softball Player of the Week after producing a .667 batting average.

Heteniak threw three complete games and improved her record in BIG EAST games to 12-2 this season with a career 33-3 league record. Heteniak held opposing batters to a measly .164 batting average, while she allowed just one hit in the Blue Demons’ 4-0 shutout of Syracuse on April 25. In 19 innings of work, the junior allowed just three runs while she struck out 18 and gave up 10 hits.

Roth had at least one hit in each of the Cardinals four games last week, including four that went for extra bases. The junior notched a .786 on-base percentage, after being hit by a pitch twice and being walked three times. Roth hit a home run in both of Louisville’s wins in the doubleheader with Georgetown on April 25.

DePaul’s Amber Patton joined Heteniak on the league’s weekly honor roll after a 6-for-13 effort at the plate.  Patton’s third hit of the week broke the BIG EAST record for hits in a single-season.  The senior All-American third baseman enters the Blue Demons final two league games with a league-best 41 hits and a .577 average.

The Blue Demons (34-10, 18-3 BIG EAST) play nonconference games at Northwestern, UIC and Valparaiso before concluding the regular season at Georgetown on Sunday.

Weekly Honor Roll: Britta Giddens, USF, Sr., 2B; Amber Patton, DePaul, Sr., 3B; Kim Schweitzer, Seton Hall, Sr., RHP; Mary Rose Sheehy, Providence, Sr., CF; Micah Truax, Connecticut, Sr., CF
