Tough opener for Vikings football program
It's wasn't an ideal situation for the Smithfield Vikings when they launched their Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football season Sunday afternoon.
They walked into the Lions den, on the road against the North Providence Jets, the most successful program in the league, and with exception of the new Junior Pee Wee squad, the Vikes suffered lopsided losses.
The Junior Pee Wee squad, a competive program for the first time this season, took a 14-6 decision as Nick Adams and Nathaniel Preziuso scored touchdowns. Preziuso scored touchdowns. Preziuso the team's quarterback, also launched a successful two-point conversion pass to Nick Adams.
Defensively, the young Vikings pillaged the Jets backfield, recording several sacks and keeping the hosts off the scoreboard until the second half. Leading the defensive charge were Adams, John Henry and Shawn Powers.
The Varsity squad was blitzed, 44-6, as they fell behind to the Jets in the first half, 30-0, and never were in the game. Mike Schiavone provided the lone bright spot when he scored his team's only touchdown. Chris Larabee looked good at quarterback for the Vikes despite the lopsided score.
The Flag team provided plenty for their fans to cheer about. The flag program is not-competitive. Nick Jacob created a highlight film clip when he took a handoff and raced 70-yards for a touchdown. Jacob had 96 yards rushing for the day. Steve D'Amico also found his way into the end zone for a touchdown and Issac Fagnant had several good runs. Defensively, Curtis Lima, Ryan Faber and Daniel Ariyan all had strong games.
Coach Mike Montella's Pee Wee team was in their game all the way, but came out on the short end of a 20-6 score. Aidan Wright was the work horse for the Vikings, breaking loose for a 70-yard scoring gallop and working his way to more than 100 yards rushing for the afternoon. Jake D'Amico wasn't far behind, also pounding the ball into the Jets defense until he gained 70 yards rushing.
Turnovers hurt the Vikings, who fumbled several times during the game. Despite that, the Vikes moved the ball on offense, and one of the prettiest plays was a pass and catch from quarterback Jordan Smith to George Panichas.
Defensively, Corey Pacheco and Bill Pollard both recovered fumbles and Wright and D'Amico were monsters, combining to make 25 tackles during the contest.
The Jayvees team also took it on the chin, 37-12, suffering from opening day jitters that resulted in several turnovers. The Vikes got it going late in the game, courtesy of speedy Dave Parrillo, who broke a string of 30 unanswered Jets points when he broke around end and raced 65 yards for a touchdown.
A short time later, Parrillo was at it again, this time breaking loose on a 45-yard gallop all the way to the end zone.
Anthony Conte and Vin Baccarie showed some flashes of rushing the ball and quarterback Nick Gerlach was efficient running his team's offense.
The Vikings will host the North End 49ers Sunday at Smithfield High School.

Rough Outing for Vikings Football Program
It was a tough outing for the Smithfield Vikings Rhode Island Pre-teen Football and Cheerleading program teams Sunday as they were swept by the strong North End 49ers of Providence.
In a closely contested game, the Junior Pee Wee squad dropped a 12-6 decision. The Vikes only points came on a six-yard run by Nathan Preziuso. Setting up the score was a 20-yard pass and run play on a halfback option play with Nick Adams throwing the ball to Zach Tataglia. Center Brian Jacobs turned in an outstanding job on the offensive line.
The Vikes led the game, 6-0 at half, but could not keep the speedy 49ers from getting to the end zone twice in the second half despite the defensive efforts of Sean Powers and D.J. Ferrier. The game ended with Smithfield driving deep into 49ers territory looking for the tying score.
The Pee Wee team dropped a 24-0 decision despite the strong running of Aidan Wright and Jake D'Amico, who gained 63 and 60 yards respectively. D'Amico also completed a pair of long passes, both going to George Panichas, but each time the Vikings threatened to score, the 49ers defense came up with the answers to stop them.
Quarterback Jordan Smith had a good game despite the score and defensively, Wright and D'Amico again led the team, scrambling all over the field to make tackles.
In Junior Varsity contest, the Vike's offensive was in high gear, but unfortunately, the defense wasn't and the 49ers took a close 32-30 decision.
Speedster Dave Parillo had a monster game for the Vikings, scoring four big touchdowns on runs of 10, 45, 50 and 60 yards as he approached the 200-yard rushing mark. Anthony Conte added a seven-yard run into the end zone for a touchdown, and Vin Vacari and Parillo had a pair of two-point PAT's each.
The game ended with the Vikings in possession and down to the 49ers 20-yard line.
Coach John Cunha's Varsity team fell to 0-2 for the season when it lost a 32-6 decision to the 49ers. Mike Schiavone was a bright spot for the Vikes, slashing his way for 150 yards gaining on the ground and Nate Lussier gained 70 yards, includeing 50 when he broke loose and scored his team's only touchdown.
The Vikes have a bye this week and return to action September 30.

The Smithfield Vikings too a pair of contests, tied one and lost one during their Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League encounter Sunday against the Elmwood Intruders.

Anchoring the defense wer Zach Cote an Lashon Jones, who recorded sacks, and Zach Tataglia who had a fumble recovery. Tre Adams made a touchdown saving tackle near the end of the game.
The Pee Wee squad dropped a 12-6 decision. The Intudersjumped out to a 12-0 first half lead, and then managed to hold off what appeared to be a completely different Vikings team in the second half. In the second half, Matthew "Chewbob" Barrette picked off a pass and that seemed to change the game's momentum. The Vikes, behind substitute quarterback Logan Courtemanche, marched down field and scored, with Jake D'Amico fireing a touchdown pass to Aidan Wright for the score. The Vikes were pushing toward the end zone trying for the tying score when time expired.
The Jayvee squad, paced by running back Dave Parrillo, swamped by Elmwood, 30-0.
The Varsity team found itself in a defensive struggle that ended in a scoreless tie. Quarterback Chris Larabee marched his team down field several times, but the Vikes were unable to put the ball in the end zone.
Anchoring the Vikings defense were Mike Schiavone, Andrew Breting and Chris Mancini.

Vikings sweep Chargers
It was a banner day for the Smithfield Vikings as they swept the Providence Chargers during their Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League contests Sunday at the Boyle complex.
With Mike Schiavone rambling for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion, the Varsity team rolled over Providence 22-0. Chris Larabee tallied on a quarterback keeper and also contribued on defense by picking a Charger pass. Brian Charette bulled his way into the end zone for two-point conversion to round out the scoring.
Nate Lussier had a huge game in the defensive secondary and also coming up with strong defensive were Greg Wagner, Dan Cote and Ryan Nason.
It was no contest on the Junior Varsity level as the first year Chargers were overwhelmed, 56-6 despite the early bench clearing by the Vikes. Vinb Baccari, Anthony Conte, Nick Gerlach, Mike Benedetti, Troy Bouthilette and Bill D'Amico all hit the scoring column, some of them multiple times, as the game was over early. The Vikings scored three touchdowns in the first few minutes of the game, settling the outcome early.
Coach Mike Montella's PeeWee team rode another outstanding performance from Aidan Wright, Jake D'Amico and quarterback Logan Courtemanche 10 a 24-12 win over the Chargers. D'Amico opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run and when Wright added the conversion, the Vikings broke out to an 8-0 lead. But the Chargers roared back, picking off a pass to give them good field position and scoring and then adding a second score before the half to take a 12-8 lead.
The Vikings bounces right back in the second half, taking the kickoff and marching down field and scoring when Wright banged his way into the end zone for 10 yard out. He also added the conversion and the Vikes took a 16-12 leadand never looked back as their defense made adjustments and did not allow another score.
D'Amico added the final score on a broken play, zig-zagging his way across the field and bowling over several Charger defenders on his way to 28-yard score. Wright added the conversion.
James Switzer and Cory Pacheco wer outstanding on the defense, both picking up fumble recoveries.
The Junior Pee Wees also enjoyed an outstanding day, piling up a 34-7 win. Vikings run over Xpress
The Smithfield Vikings Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League program enjoyed one of its best weeks, sweeping past the North Smithfield Xpress in games Sunday at the local high school field.
The Vikings Junior Pee Wee team stormed to a 14-0 win behind a pair of touchdown runs by Nick Adams, who found pay dirt from four and 20 yards away.
Anchoring the defense were Michael Araujo, Harry Smith, D.J. Ferreira, Marcus Araujo and Tre Adams. Zach Tartaglia had an outstanding game running the ball.
In a hard-fought battle, the Vikes Pee Wee team posed a 14-6 win. After giving up a touchdown near the beginning of the game, the Pee Wee defense turned into marauders, thwarting every scoring drive that North Smithfield squad could muster.
Behind the running of Aidan Wright and Jake D'Amico, the Vikings put together a scoring drive, with D'Amico doing the honors from 35 yards out, to tie the game. The PAT failed.
The game turned into a defensive struggle after that, but in the third quarter, the Vikes again put together a long drive that ended when Wright crashed through and into the end zone from nine yards away, giving the Vikings the lead. Wright also added the two-point conversion to give his team a 14-6 lead. Quarterback Logan Courtemanche played a major role in the drive.
Stepping up to make multiple tackles and anchoring the defense were Jordan Smith, Ben Mitchell, Matt "Chewbob" Barrett and Tyler Dionne.
The Vikings Jayvees had an easy time of it, rolling to a 32-6 win to move to 3-2 for the season.
The Varsity team was awarded a 2-0 forfeit win because the Xpress does not have a varsity team.
On the Flag level, the Vikes youngest players got out to a fast start as Kyle DaRosa broke off a 26-yard touchdown run. Steve D'Amico and Luke Mitchell also ripped off long gains. Strong on defense were Daniel Ayriyan, Nick Jacob and Sage Hagen.
The Vikings program will observe its homecoming Sunday at the local high school when they host Pawtucket. Events include a homecoming dance Friday night at the Portuguese American Club on Fenwood Street and crowning of a homecoming court during Sunday's games.

Jayvees get nipped by Redskins
They stood toe-to-toe, each taking the other's best shots and coming back for more, but when the final whistle blew, there was no fairy tale ending.
The Smithfield Vikings Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football Junior Varsity team didn't give an inch when the undefeated Woonsocket Redskins came to town on Sunday, battling the league leaders on even terms throughtout the contest. But at game's end, they fell just short, dropping a 30-28 decision.
The Vikes took the opening kickoff and with strong blocking up front, Dave Parrillo and Vincent Baccari took turns plowing over, under around and through the Redskins defense until Baccari broke into the end zone from six yards out. The PAT failed, the Vikes led, but not for long.
The Redskins recovered the ensuing onside kick, and on the very first play from scrimmage, their speedster, Jalen Evans ran off tackle, broke through the line and once he did, no one could catch him as he raced 60 yards for the game-tying touchdown. Evans added the two-point PAT and the Redskins took the lead.
Less than a minute later, it was Parrillo's turn as the two star running backs began to dominate the game. After the Vikes picked up a first down, Parrillo broke on loose around right end, breaking a pair of tackles along the way, and then just out running everyone for a 55-yard score.
On one of the best plays all season, Parrillo faked a run for the PAT and lofted a pass into the end zone, where Baccari made an unbelievable one-handed catch, fully extending himself , and pulling in the ball as he fell, and the Vikes were up 14-8.
Undaunted, the Redskins took the ensuing kickoff and began marching right back down the field, this time with Khalil Oliver as the featured runner. He broke off a pair of long gainers, with the second one going for 25 yards for a score, with Evans providing the key block. Oliver also broke free for the two-point conversion and the Redskins went back on top in the see-saw contest, 16-14.
With Parrillo ripping off a pair of 30-yard gains, the second one for a touchdown, the Vikes regained the lead, 20-16 when the PAT was snuffed.
With time running down in the first half, Evans was called upon again and this time took a handoff to the left side, saw there was nothing but Vikings defenders in front of him, so he reversed his field, caught a block and found an opening and in a flash, he was sprinting down the sidelines with nothing but oxygen between him and the goal line. The 50-yard score moved the Redskins back to the lead and when Jared Ryan added the two-point PAT, it was 24-20.
Just as the first half resembled a track meet, the second half was totally opposite as both teams made adjustments and settled down on defense. Each team scored once, and the Redskins left Smithfield with its hard-fought two point win.
Woonsocket's Flag team won despite a 125-yard rushing performance by Viking's quarterback Kyle DaRosa. Leading the Vikes on defense were Nick Jacobs, Nathan Lussier and Dylan Celona.
Smithfield's Junior Pee Wees took an 18-0 decision as Nathan Preziuso fired a 20-yard scoring strike to Zach Tataglia, Nick Adams broke loose for a 25-yard scoring scamper and Tre Adams bullied his way into the end zone from one-yard out for the third score.
Coaches cited the offensive line efforts of Harry Smith and D.J. Ferreira and anchoring the defense were Marcus Araujo, Jacob Dion, Zach Beauchamp, Lajohn Jones and Brian Jacobs.
Despite a pair of touchdowns by Mike Schiavone, who picked up 90 hard-earned rushing yards, the Vikings Varsity dropped a 20-12 decision to Woonsocket. Nate Lussier also had a good game running for coach John Cunha's Varsity squad.
Andrew Breting caused a pair of fumbles and Chris Mancini recorded multiple tackles to lead the defense.
The Pee Wee squad lost , 12-0, despite the fact the team recovered six fumbles by the Redskins. As usual, Jake D'Amico and Aiden Wright paced the offense. Best defensively were Matt Barrette, Cory Pacheco, Bill Pollard, Jordan Smith, James Switzer, Albert Kishfy, and Sam Aubin.
The Vikings conclude their regular season on Sunday at Washington County.

Smithfield Vikings open season with big wins
The Varsity team was a 2-0 forfeit, and Jayvees swept to an easy 3-0 win, and the Pee Wee squad took a 24-8 decision, over the Providence Chargers. The Junior Pee Wee team put up a great battle, but lost, 14-6.
The Varsity logged its forfeit because the Chargers could not field a team, putting the team at 1-0 before a snap is taken.
With Cody D'Olivera running wild for more than 200 rushing yards, including a pair of 80-yard breakaway touchdown runs, the Jayvees coasted. Head coach Rick Almeida and assistants Cliff Fortin and Dave Day provided ample playing time for all of their players as their front-liners proved to be way too strong for the visiting Chargers. Jake Damico also found the end zone on a pair of short runs.
The Jayvees featured a swarming defense that kept the Chargers pinned throughout the game. Chris Cote, Damico and D'Olivera all had fumble recoveries, and the defensive unit recorded multiple sacks and tackles for loses.
Coach Mike Montella's Pee Wee squad spotted the Chargers an 8-0 lead when a running back broke loose around right end and didn't stop running until 70-yards later when he reached the end zone on the first play from scrimmage. The Vikes looked a little tentative on offense in their first game, and had to punt, but then the troops settled in.
The defense clamped down on the Chargers, allowing only one first down for the remainder of the game, and the offense got on track, with Jordan Smith plunging in from six yards out for their first score. The TD was set up by a 25-yard gain courtesy of Nick Adams. Smith added the conversion, and it was 8-0 at half.
It was all Vikings in the second half as Montella and assistant Mike Tartaglia made several adjustments and they all worked. Smith ripped loose for a 40-yard touchdown run, with Jack Beauchamp bulling in for the two-point conversion, and later in the third quarter, Zack Tartaglia broke loose for a 25-yard scoring scamper, with Beauchamp again doing the honors on the conversion.
In the final quarter, the Vikings were content to run the ball between the tackles, eating up the clock.
Defensive standouts were Nick Adams, Nick Davis, Smith and Nathaniel Preziuso, all with sacks, and Zach Cote and Tre Adams, each with key tackles. Anchoring the offensive line that opened gaping holes for the running attack was center Derek Desaulniers.
Coach Bob Pina's Junior Pee Wee team dropped a 14-6 decision, despite an electrifying 68-yard touchdown run by quarterback Joe DeRosa, who also teamed with receiver Morgan Dougherty on a nice pass and run play. Dougherty also recovered a fumble, and Joe Spaziano recorded a sack.
Cameron Hebert scored on a nice 13-yard jaunt as the Flag team put points on the board in its first possession of the season. Setting up that play were nice gains by Nick Costa and John Golato. After giving up a score, the Vikes answered right back with another score on a short run by Hebert. Setting up the touchdown was a 40-yard gain by Riley Sullivan. There are no final scores kept for the Flag program, an instructional league.
Leading the defense for coach Mike Aubin's team were Tyler DaRosa with three tackles and a sack and Steven Mason with four tackles and a sack.

Woonsocket Redskins tame Vikings football teams
It was a huge day for the Woonsocket Redskins Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League program Sunday as they swept three games and tied another against the home team Smithfield Vikings.
The Redskins, in a driving rain, took the Junior Pee Wee game, 21-0.
The Vikings' Zach Pinault recorded a fumble recovery and had several tackles. He was a defensive force along with Nathan Lussier, Kyle Gagnon and Dylan Celona. Evan McAuley and Joe DaRosa ran the ball well for head coach Bob Pita's team.
In a defensive struggle, the Woonsocket team edged the Vikings Pee Wees, 6-0. With Nick Davis, Hayden Beaulieu and Jordan Smith making key tackles, the Vikings were able to stuff the Woonsocket offense early, but the Redskins managed to put together a drive and take a 6-0 lead before half-time, and that's all the scoring there would be.
In the second half, Zack Tartaglia of the Vikings broke loose for a 12-yard gain and a 20-yard scamper, but the Vikes could not push the ball into scoring territory.
Nathaniel Preziuso gave the Vikings hope by picking off a pass late, but once again the Redskins defense proved too tough.
The offensive highlight of the half for the Vikes came when quarterback Logan Courtemanche pitched out to Smith, who launched a long pass to Tre Adams for a long gain.
The Junior Varsity game was a battle, with the teams playing to a 6-6 tie. Highlighting the game for the Vikings was the running of Cody D'Oliveira, who gained 150 yards on the ground.
Dave Parrillo ran for a touchdown before being injured, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings Varsity team dropped a 20-6 decision to the Redskins. Leading the Vikings were James Flanagan and Patrick Pita, who anchored the offensive line, and quarterback Vin Baccari, who broke off several long runs. Mike Benedetti and Anthony Cone also had strong games for the Vikes.
The Vikings travel to the South Side Saints Sunday.

Vikes say 'yikes' to South Side Saints teams
There were some good individual efforts, but the South Side Saints of Providence proved too good and too fast for the Smithfield Vikings in a Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League match up on Sunday.
The Vikings Junior Pee Wee team took it on the chin to the tune of 40-8. Despite that score, Nick Jacob piled up 72 yards in gains on just six carries and had the Vikings' only touchdown, and also added the two-point conversion. Evan McAuley, Joe DaRosa and Morgan Doherty also ran well. Stephen Damico played well defensively as the team fell to 0-3 for the season.
The Jayvee team was more competitive, but lost, 26-8. The offensive highlights came when Brendan Benoit ripped off a 65-yard kickoff return that set up a touchdown scamper by Cody D'Oliveira. Jake Damico also found a seam in the Saints special teams and had a 75-yard runback on another kickoff, but the effort was wasted when the Vikings offense stalled and could not turn the run into points.
Chris Cote was super alert in the secondary, picking off a pair of passes for the Vikes, who fell to 1-1-1 for the season.
The Pee Wee team dropped a 22-0 decision. It began as a defensive battle and was scoreless after one period when the Saints broke through for a score. Zack Beauchamps and D.J. Ferreira stood out on the tough defense early on.
Jordan Smith, the Vikes' power runner, turned in several strong individual efforts and managed to gain 65 yards, and Zach Tartaglia also picked up hard earned yards. Tartaglia was also on the receiving end of a pair of nice passes from quarterback Logan Courtemanche. Sam Aubin and Devin Joseph were effective defensively in the second half.
The Varsity dropped to 1-2 for the season, having to play without star running back Dave Parrillo, who is injured. Three other starters are on the injured list and that, along with a talented Saints team, was too much for the Vikings to overcome as they dropped a 28-0 decision.
The Vikes got some good gains from running backs Vincent Baccari, James Flanagan and Mike Benedetti, and strong defense from Adam Benoit and Mark Forte.
The Flag team got things started on the right foot when Tyler DaRosa, on the first set of downs, broke loose on a 65-yard scoring jaunt. The game turned into a defensive struggle after that, with Ron Araujo's key defensive stop halting a promising Saints drive. Also making huge stops for the Vikes were Cameron Hebert, Lucas McDonald and Mike Castelle.
With time running out in the game, DaRosa once again broke loose, this time taking the ball on his own 10 yard line and racing 90 yards, not stopping before he put up another six-pointer.
The Vikings travel to North Smithfield to play the Xpress on Sunday.

Vikes Pee Wees take only win against Xpress
The North Smithfield Xpress Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League program proved it's for real when its Varsity and Junior Varsity teams whipped the Smithfield Vikings Sunday in rain-saturated field conditions.
With its new state-of-the-art turf field where the high school team played earlier in the weekend sitting empty just a few hundred yards away, the youngsters slogged around on a makeshift field in the outfield of the baseball diamond.
The field conditions didn't seem to bother the Xpress Varsity, which rung up a 38-0 win, or the Jayvees, who put up a 30-6 win. The Pee Wee game went to the Vikings and coach Mike Montella, 16-8. The Vikings Junior Pee Wee team was also given credit for a 2-0 win, a forfeit, because North Smithfield does not field a team on that level.
It was the Wil Andino show in the Jayvee game as the speedy, hard-running back zipped through and around the Vikings defense throughout the game, scoring four touchdowns. Andino also added a pair of two-point PAT conversions as the Jayvees advanced their record to a perfect 3-0.
C.J. Dandeneau also had a big game for the Xpress, particularly on defense, where he logged 10 tackles and helped keep the Vikings at bay. He also managed to bull in for a two-point conversion.
The Vikes took the opening drive and marched all the way down field behind the strong running of Cody D'Oliveira, who broke off a 25-yarder into the end zone to cap the drive. After that, it was all Xpress, as they scored 30 unanswered points. Despite the score, D'Oliveira and Jake Damico had strong running games, combining for nearly 200 yards between them. But key fumbles stifled some Vikings drives.
The Xpress had difficulty holding onto the ball as well during the contest and the Vikings' Chris Cote recovered two of them, and McKenzie Cavanaugh pounced on one. Defensively, Chris Hawkins recorded a pair of sacks.
North Smithfield's Varsity squad upped its record to 2-1 with a convincing win over a short-handed Vikings squad, which had several players unable to play because of injury.
It was no contest as the Xpress tallied two touchdowns on pass plays, one on a fumble return, one running and another on a kickoff return as they dominated in all phases of the game.
James Flanagan was a bright light for the Vikings, hauling in a pair of passes and also forcing a fumble, and Ian Benoit recorded several tackles. Dave Fortin also had a good game on defense.
In the Pee Wee game, quarterback Logan Courtemanche tallied the winning score on a six-yard run to leads the Vikes to a win. He also set up the team's first touchdown with a 55-yard burst from scrimmage, lugging the ball deep into Xpress territory. Jordan Smith accounted for the last 12 yards on the drive and put the ball into the end zone. Zach Beauchamp bulled into the end zone for the important PAT, making the score 8-0.
The Xpress roared back to tie the game 8-8 at half, when Nick Cicerone broke loose and sprinted 35 yards for a touchdown. Making a major contribution during the drive was Cody DeMaire, who put together some good carries, but in the fourth quarter, the Vikes put together a sustained drive that culminated in the Courtemanche touchdown to take the win. Beauchamp added the two-pointer to make the final 16-8.
Providing a key block on the Courtemanche touchdown was Derek Desaulniers. Nick Adams broke loose for a what appeared to be a touchdown early in the game, but the play was called back because of a penalty.
Montella said his team got some strong running from Zack Tartaglia and Marcus Araujo and defensively, Zach Cote and Nathaniel Preziuso led the way.

Vikings swamped by North End
The North End 49'ers put a damper on the Smithfield Vikings homecoming weekend, sweeping all of the competitive division football games in the Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football league encounter.
The Varsity team absorbed a 36-6 loss at the hands of the 49er's, with Dave Parrillo's kickoff return for a touchdown the only score for the local team.
Quarterback Vin Baccari hooked up with Mark Forte on a 20-yard completion and also had a strong game on defense for the Vikes, as did Adam Benoit and Troy Bouthillette.
The Junior Varsity did not fare much better, dropping a 26-0 decision to a much quicker 49er's team. Despite the lopsided score, the Vikes put together a fairly good ground game, with Chris Cote running for 50 yards, and Jake Damico, 45.
Quarterback Nick Gerlach also had his moments, completing a 25-yard strike to Kyle Courtemanche and a 20-yarder to Damico, but the Vikes could not get the ball into the end zone.
Defensively, Mckenzie Cavanaugh had a huge game, recording four tackles, and Chris Hawkins had a fumble recovery.
The Pee Wee team also was beaten, but played a stronger game. It was three long touchdown runs that spelled defeat for the Vikes.
Jordan Smith, Zach Tartaglia, Zach Beauchamp, Nick Adams and Tre Adams all ran the ball well for the Vikes, who moved up-and-down the field several times, but the 49er's defense would stiffen each time they got close to scoring and held them off the board.
The Vikings Junior Pee Wee team dropped a 44-6 decision. The team's only score came from Steven Damico, who had a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also had a couple of tackles and a fumble recovery on defense.
The Flag team had a good day, starting when Shane Hopkins broke loose on a 40-yard run, setting up a short touchdown run by Tyler DaRosa. Cameron Hebert added the two-point PAT.
DaRosa later broke loose on a 60-yard run for a six-pointer, and Gianni Araujo culminated the day when he ripped the ball out of a 49er's receiver's hands and took it 60 yards to the house for score.
It was homecoming for the Vikes and queens and kings were named for each age division. Savannah Sullivan was queen for the Flag program, and Peyton Mace, king. On the Junior Pee Wee level, Emma Gauvin was queen and Morgan Doughty, king, and for the Pee Wees, the queen was Margaret Spetrini and king was Jordan Smith.
Selected as queen for the Jayvees was MacKenzie Bain, and Chris Cote was named king, and on the Varsity level, Amanda Ferrante was named queen, and Ian Benoit, king.

Vikings Varsity smacks Raiders
Playing their best game of the season, the Smithfield Vikings Varsity team finally put it all together and crushed the Washington County Raiders 30-0 Sunday at Smithfield High School.
Dave Parrillo came up huge for the Vikes, scoring a pair of touchdowns on runs of 40 and 50 yards and adding a pair of two-point conversions. He also picked off a Raiders pass. Mike Benedetti also had a strong running game and quarterback Vin Baccari ran for a 40-yard score and Anthony Conte scored when he hauled in a pass from Parrillo on a halfback option pass. Defensively, R.J. Baldinelli and Craig Lussier led the team. Coach John Cunha said it was his team's best effort of the season,.
Although Cody D'Oliveira scored a pair of touchdowns and quarterback Kyle Courtemanche threw for over 100 yards, the Vikings Jayvee team dropped a 38-16 decision to the Raiders. Jake Damico paced the defense with seven tackles and an interception.
The Pee Wee team posted a 16-0 win, holding Washington County without a first down in the game as its defense really stepped up. The Vikes scored on their first play from scrimmage on an option pass from Jordan Smith to Nick Adams, a play that covered 55 yards. Smith added the two-point conversion on a run. Zach Tartaglia ripped off a 45-run later in the first quarter, setting up a scoring strike from quarterback Logan Courtemanche to Smith, ending the scoring.
Nick Davis, Nick Adams, Zach Beauchamp and Sam Aubin were defensive standouts.
The Junior Pee Wee team had a tough outing, losing 54-0.
The Flag team was firing on all cylinders as Gianni Araujo twice snatched the ball from opposing players and rumbled all the way to the end zone for touchdowns.
He also added a conventional running touchdown, as did Cameron Hebert and Peyton Mace added the extra point.

Mixed Results in West Elmwood
The Vikings Jayvee team cranked the West Elmwood Crusaders, 26-6.
The Vikes used a multi-faceted offensive attack and a smothering defense to turn the victory trick. Leading the way in point production were Jake Damico with a pair of two-point conversions on passes from quarterback Kyle Courtemanche and 75 yards rushing, Brendan Benoit, a touchdown and 50-yards gained, plus a conversion and the big noise, Cody D'Oliveira, who has paced the team all season. D'Oliveira returned a kickoff for touchdown, blasted one into pay dirt from five yards away and scampered 25-yards for yet another score.
While the offense put together some of their more sustained drives of the season, the defense was just as impressive, holding a fast West Elmwood team to a single score. Leading the way were Tre Green, Steve Parker, Chris Hawkins, McKenzie Cavanaugh and Albert Kishfy, but the game ball belonged to Chris Cote, who logged five tackles, two sacks and found time to recover two West Elmwood fumbles.
The Pee Wee team was its own worst enemy, fumbling or taking penalties at crucial times, and dropped a 26-0 decision. The interior defense did an outstanding job, but West Elmwood's speed to the outside was the difference as they logged four touchdowns, all on sweeps.

Viking Flag Team completes strong season
They aren't supposed to keep score officially, because Flag football is supposed to be strictly an instructional program, but if you ask the kids on the Smithfield Vikings team, they'll tell you that they played eight games this season and scored more points than the opponents in seven of them.
The program is part of the Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League like the rest of the Vikings program. But because of the age of the youngsters 5-6, there is no tackling and instead flags carried around the waist are snatched by opposing players, serving as a tackle. Coaches are allowed on the field to instruct while games are going on.
On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Flag team put together another strong performance against Johnston. The came opened with Cameron Hebert breaking loose on a 60-yard run for a touchdown, and on the next set of downs, after the Vikes stopped the Panthers' offense, Hebert broke loose on another touchdown scamper, this one covering 40-yards.
Then, on the game's very last play, Tyler DaRosa took a handoff, found an opening and zipped 80 yards for another score, a great way to end the season.
Anchoring the defense were Chris Baxter Tyler DaRosa and Cameron Hebert.
The Vikings Pee Wee team dropped a 24-6 decision to finish at 3-5, but that was still good enough for coach Mike Montella's team to earn a playoff spot.
Jordan Smith was the offensive cog, scoring his team's only touchdown. The Vikings also received significant running yardage from Zach Tartaglia and Zach Beauchamp.
Nick Adams and Brian Jacobs both had fumble recoveries, and Marcus Araujo made his presence known by making a touchdown-saving tackle.
The Junior Varsity closed with a bang, knocking off Johnston, 20-6 as Cody D'Oliveira slammed his way for 175 yards in running yards and quarterback Kyle Courtemanche had a banner day, passing for nearly 100 yards.
Brendan Benoit had a huge day, scoring a pair of touchdowns and adding a two-point conversion, and D'Oliveira had the other score.
Defensively, Nick Gerlach picked off a Panther pass and returned it 30 yards, Albert Kishfy recorded five tackles, including a sack, Jake Damico logged seven tackles, and D'Oliveira, eight.
The Jayvee squad also made it to the playoffs.
The Varsity team got a late touchdown on a 45-yard run by Dave Parrillo, but nothing else as they dropped their last regular season game, 24-6. Anthony Ravelli and Vin Baccari also had strong efforts on offense as did Mike Benedetti and Adam Benoit on defense.
The team finished at 3-5 and also scraped into the playoffs.
The Junior Pee Wee team ended a tough 0-8 season by losing its final game, 40-0.
