Silverhawks finish Fifth at ASA B Nationals

The Silverhawks finished out the 2009 season with a fifth place finish at the ASA B Nationals.  The team started out with 12-0 victory over Vandehey Builders out of Arizona, with Spud Barker in the circle.  The team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, short timing their opponent and getting off to a good start in the winners bracket.  The second game for the Silverhawks was against Keating's Fitness out of Pennsylvania.  The Silverhawks got on the board in the second with a single by Chris McGehee that allowed Todd Uhrig to score.  Keatings answered back in the third when they scratched one across the plate of their own to knot the score at 1-1.  In the fourth inning with Ross Herold on second and two out McGehee hit an RBI Double to the left center field gap to make the score 2-1.  Keatings challenged in the top of the seventh when their lead off batter tripled to right field, but Todd Uhrig shut the door striking out two and fielding a comebacker up the middle to strand the runner.  Todd Uhrig threw the complete game for the 2-1 win.  Up next for the Silverhawks was the Manor Dirtbags from Texas.  This was another nail biter, with Todd Uhrig again in the circle, up against Tim Niell for Manor.  Manor jumped out the the early lead on an error with two outs that allowed two runs to score.  The Silverhawks answered right back with a run of their own to make it 2-1.  Another error in the fourth allowed two more runs to score, making the score 4-1, but the Silverhawks were able to scratch another run across making it 4-2.  A solo homerun for Manor finished the scoring 5-2 Manor, sending the Silverhawks to the losers bracket side.  The Silverhawks, with Spud Barker in the circle matched up against Lunas Towing out of Arizona.  Lunas jumped out to an 2-1 lead before the Silverhawks bats woke up, with Jason Pruitt doubling in a run, Carlos Flores singled him home and Troy Parker tripled to deep center driving in Flores, to make the score 4-2 Silverhawks.  Lunas answered back in the top of the sixth with 5 runs on 3 homeruns to take a 7-4 lead and the victory.  All in all it was a good showing for the Silverhawks, handing eventual National Champion Keatings Fitness their only loss of the tournament and hanging in the game till the very end against runner up Manor Dirt Bags, one break here or there and the outcome could have been very different.  Congratulations goes out to Chris McGehee for making First team All American, and the rest of the Silverhawks for a great year.

Silverhawks go 3-2 at Best of the West...

The Silverhawks started off the 2009 Best of the West with in the winners bracket.  Facing off for game 1 were Todd Winkworth for the Silverhawks and Sonny Perkins for the So Cal Tribes.  The Silverhawks got on the board early in the first scoring two runs off Perkins, and this is all Winks would need, coasting to a 4-0 victory.  In the second game the Silverhawks had Sean Barker in the circle against the Hostilez and Anthony Loza.  The Silverhawks jumped out to a early lead, but gave the lead away with five unearned runs to give the game to the Hostilez.  Todd Winkworth took the loss in relief 7-6, without giving up an earned run.  In the third game on Saturday, the Silverhawks bats showed up in force against Tri-Counties.  Todd Winkworth once again got the call in the circle, going the distance in the short game.  The Silverhawks jumped out to the early lead with homeruns by the first two batters of the game, and never looked back, winning 12-1 in five innings.

On Sunday the Silverhawks opened up against the Beaumont Coyotes, with Sean Barker in the circle.  The Silverhawks made short work of the Coyotes 9-0 in five innings to move on.  In the quarter finals the Silverhawks faced off against the California A's with Todd Winkworth going for the Silverhawks, and Mike Egerdeen in the circle for the A's.  This game was a hard fought battle by both teams with the eventual tournament champion A's coming out on top 5-1.  The Silverhawks finished with a fifth place finish.

Rude Pac wins Silverhawks Invitational...

Rude Pac takes the title behind the right arm of Ed Gasper. A solo home run off the bat of Stevie Garcia was all the offense that Gasper and the Rude Pac needed to cruise to the finish. Garcia hit a 1-0 change up in the bottom of the second off Sonny Perkins giving Rude Pac a 1-0 lead. That is all Gasper would need as he crafted his way threw the West Bishop Niners' lineup. The Niners' had their opportunity to score in the top of the seventh when Aaron Dondero led off the inning with a single, followed by a double by Sonny Perkins. Dondero was cut down at the plate trying to score from first, and Gasper retired the next two batters leaving the tying run on second base.

Congratulations goes out the Rude Pac as they walked away with a $500.00 check for their efforts.

The Silverhawks would like to thank all teams that competed at this years Silverhawks Invitational, as you helped us in our goal of making this tournament one of the premier tournaments in California, and we welcome you back as we continue to grow the tournament in future years.
