The Shelby Lions Football & Cheerleading squads worked very hard and executed extremely well to accomplish their goals this past weekend. On Saturday November 8, 2008, the Freshman and Junior Varsity Cheerleading Squads pulled off an amazing double double, by winning 1st place in both the Dance and Cheer competitions at the Cheer Off. Congratulations to all coaches and cheerleaders on this amazing feat, all that hard work and devotion paid off big time!!! On Sunday November 9, 2008, the Freshman and Junion Varsity football teams faced teams that beat them convincingly in their regular season games. Freshman faced the #1 seeded unbeaten Royal Oak Chiefs, which beat them 25-14 in game #8. But the Freshman team was much more determined and focused this time around. They fought hard and played more physical pounding out a 20-0 half time lead. And then scored the only touchdown in the second half to secure the 26-0 victory, and become the OMYFA 2008 Freshman Superbowl Champions!!! JV faced the home field NFWB Vikings which beat them 25-13 in game #5. After beating the #1 seeded Madison Heights Wolverines in the playoffs, they also came out playing with more emotion and determination. After scoring on their first drive to make the score 6-0, the two teams battled back and forth until a defensive fumble recovery returned for a touchdown gave the Lions a 14-0 half time lead. The defense kept pounding and gang tackling NFWB's star running back and refused to let them score a single point, while the offense punched in another touchdown in the second half to complete the 20-0 victory, making them the OMYFA 2008 JV Superbowl Champions!!! Congratulations to all the Coaches, Football Players, and Cheer Leaders for ending the season with such a spectacular display of dedication, devotion, and desire. All that hard work and practice really paid off, you should be extremely proud of these accomplishments!!! Go Lions!!! Monday, November 20 Shelby Lions JV Takes Second in Mobile Alabama National Tournament!!! Congratulations to Shelby Lions JV team for taking 2nd place in the Turkey Day Classic National Football Tournament. There was over 100 teams in the different weight/age classes with teams from many different states. Most of the teams were all star teams with players from many different teams. In the first round the Lions faced a local team called the Cottage Hill Steelers who went undefeated and won their leage, they came to the tournament with most of their team and a couple of all stars added. The Lions played a very strong game getting a 32-0 shutout win. This got everyone in our category talking about the team from up north! Shelby Lions JV keeps ROLLING, in the second round they faced an all star team from Theodore that had a lot of players from different teams. This was a hard fought game that had lot of super hard hits and many players from both teams hobbling off the field. Shelby held a tight 6-0 lead at the half and punched in a couple of more scores in the second half to get another 19-0 shutout win. Unfortunately Paul Miller suffered a Concussion getting an onside kick late in the game. The good news is he is feeling better and was on the sidelines cheering his team on in the Championship game. By the time this game ended at 10:30 pm it left many players limping and sore from the hard hitting exciting victory. Now there was much talk about both this team from the North and their fans, who provided a lot of extra emotion with all their loud cheering and screaming, leaving many of them hoarse and unable to speak... The Championship Game was Saturday morning at 10:15am, less than 12 hours after their hard fought victory and pitted them against another all star studded team from River Region area of north Alabama. The Lions fought hard and the fans cheered loudly but they came up on the wrong side of a 28-6 final score. This was an extremely exciting tournament for the players, coaches, and families, which was was expressed with an emotional and sincere close out session after the Championship game. We are very proud of how hard our team played and gave everything they had, many fans from other teams could not believe that this was our regular season team with no added all stars and kept questioning us about that. CONGRATULATIONS JV football for a great season and tournament. GO LIONS!!! |
