Welcome to the Shelburne Veterans website The Vets were founded in the winter of 1998 with our first game being played in the summer of 1999. Two of the original founders Barry Trood and Mark Early are still with the club which is now heading into our 12th year on the floor in 2010. The "Veterans" nickname was chosen to honour all of our Canadian War Vets who have served our country so well over the past 100 years. Thanks to them our country is free and continues to be so. Our first player ever signed was "Cody Jamieson" who was a PeeWee player at the time and continued playing until 2007 with our Intermediate team until he went overage in 2008. Cody was a member of our Ontario Champion Intermediate "C" team that won in 2005 and was also a member of our Bantam "D" team which also won the Vets first Ontario title back in 2000.
Our club has won 5 provincial championships as follows: 2000 Bantam "D", 2000 Tyke "D", 2001 Novice "D", 2004 Midget "C" and in 2005 Intermediate "C". We have also been provincial finalists 6 times as well including 3 in our first year of operation on the floor in 1999. Our PeeWee team toured New Brunswick in 2004 winning the Fundy Riptide tournament in Saint John while also playing 2 games against the N.B. provincial team. In 2006 Daniel Craig of our PeeWee Vets team became our first player to make the Ontario Provincial team. This was quite an honour for Daniel as well as for our club. Daniel was the only player from a "C" rated center to make the team that year. Daniel continue to shine and presently plays Midget with our Vets. Our club won the OLA award in 2000 for the club that best promotes the game of lacrosse in the province while in 2009 Barry Trood our founder won the OLA "Mr Lacrosse" Award for the individual person who best promotes the game in Ontario.
The year 2008 marked our clubs 10th year anniversary and what better way to mark the development of our club then see our town be awarded a Jr."C" lacrosse team in the newly formed OLA Jr."C" lacrosse league. The Jr "C" Vets are now one of 8 teams in the league with the other teams being Caledon, Center Wellington, Innisfil, West Durham, Peterboro, Kingston and Clarington. The Jr."C" Vets play most of their games at home on friday nights at 8pm at the Bunker so get down and check out our big league team this summer. These are our local players so give them your support. Its a great place for your child to watch and learn the game! Make a point of taking in the action this summer!
In recent news congrats are in order for "Hanna Early" daughter of our VP Mark Early. Hanna showed her talents not only while she played Vets box lacrosse with the boys through the years but it crossed over to the the women's field game as she was selected to Canada's under 19 team for 2010. Hanna is just an excellent athlete and we're all so glad she has been rewarded for her hard work in lacrosse over the years. Shelburne Vets are proud of you Hanna..way to go! Barry Trood our founder was nominated by the Tri-Towns Lacrosse Club (Haileybury/New Liskard )and was awarded the "Mr Lacrosse Award" from the OLA for the person who best promotes the game of lacrosse in Ontario for 2009. This is the OLA 's highest honour Award and was much appreciated by Barry.
The executive lead by second year President "Bobbi Jo Bannon" is looking forward to a great 2010 season and we hope to bring home more championships. Our club works towards excellence in lacrosse in an enjoyable enviroment for all our players and their families. We believe in fair play and hope you enjoy your year. Its all about playing the game of lacrosse and the children having fun....don't lose sight of that!
