Preseason Coverage from the Press: East Division

By Mike Mangan • Press & Sun-Bulletin • August 29, 2008

CHENANGO FORKS * Coach: Don Brozovic.

* Last year's division finish: Second. * Opener: Tuesday at Seton Catholic Central.

* Top returning players: Tyler Gill, sr., midfielder; Nate Oberhaus, sr. midfielder; Chris Spear, jr., midfielder/forward; Corey Bruet, jr., midfielder/forward.

* Outlook: Forks battled with Susquehanna Valley for the East Division title, only to come up a little short. This season, however, could bring a division title as the Blue Devils return most of their key players. Gill is the top scorer, and Oberhaus is a strong all-around player. Spear and Bruet should strengthen the offense. Defensively, Forks is led by seniors J.T. Felter and Mike Hogan. The varsity roster of 19 players includes 11 seniors and eight juniors.

CHENANGO VALLEY * Coach: Mike Andrew.

* Last year's division finish: Fifth. * Opener: Today vs. Windsor at Sidney-Mang Tournament.

* Top returning players: Colin Bigart, sr., midfielder/forward; Jordan Oakley, sr., midfielder/forward.

* Outlook: CV struggled last season, but the Warriors figure to be improved behind the return of nine players from last year's team, including third-year varsity players Bigart and Oakley. Defensively, CV appears to be pretty solid, but Andrew is hoping for much more offensive consistency this season.

SETON CATHOLIC CENTRAL * Coach: David Kendall.

* Last year's division finish: Third. * Opener: Saturday vs. Whitney Point.

* Top returning players: Sean Bell, sr., forward; Ivan Jones, sr., midfielder; Pat Matthews, sr., forward.

* Outlook: The Saints have been perennial division title contenders in recent years, though it's to be seen if this year's team can overcome significant graduation losses from last year's squad. Matthews is a returning division all-star and likely Seton CC's top offensive threat, and both Bell and Jones are capable players in the midfield. The trio of Matthews, Bell and Jones are among seven returning seniors.

SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY * Coach: Al Mydlinski.

* Last year's division finish: First. * Opener: Today vs. Ithaca.

* Top returning players: Steve Rathbun, sr., forward; Devin Arnold, sr., midfielder.

* Outlook: Gone is all-state defender Nick Taro, as well as several other key players from SV's East Division title team. But the cupboard isn't completely bare, meaning the Sabers could find themselves in the division title mix again, especially if the defense jells. Rathbun and Arnold are fine all-around players, and forward Ronnie Graham and Preston Patak should be able to shoulder some of the scoring load this season. Depth is a concern, so avoiding significant injuries is a must.

WHITNEY POINT * Coach: Troy Rounds.

* Last year's division finish: Sixth. * Opener: Saturday at Seton CC.

* Top returning players: Dan Arseaneau, sr., forward; Kyle Jerauld, sr., defender; Tom Taft, sr., defender; Greg Taggart, sr., defender.

* Outlook: Whitney Point struggled last season but hopes to make strides behind a defense that returns several key starters. Offensively, things could be a struggle in the early going as Rounds looks for players to emerge. Arseaneau is a proven player, and sophomore forward Zach Kellicutt is a player that Rounds feels can develop into a prominent scorer.

WINDSOR * Coach: Jeff Nolan.

* Last year's division finish: Fourth. * Opener: Today vs. Chenango Valley at Sidney-MANG Tournament.

* Top returning players: Brenton Jones, sr., forward; Rob Colwell, sr., defender; Evan Lippolis, jr., defender; Chad Gerdus, jr., defender.

* Outlook: Windsor made significant strides last season, going 6-12 and enjoying its best division finish. Further progression upward will largely depend on the Black Knights' ability to find players to complement Jones offensively. Junior midfielder Bryan Barnes and sophomore midfielder Hunter Farr figure to have significant roles for Windsor. Defensively, things appear in good shape with Colwell, Lippolis and Gerdus leading an experienced unit. Senior Tyler Shimkus will see some time in goal.
