Friday, August 25 Pre-Season Soccer Story From the Binghamton Press: Sanzo, Kuzemka class of STAC By Robert Bonaparte Press & Sun-Bulletin When you ask boys soccer coaches in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference the question on who's the most talented player in the league entering the 2006 season, two names are brought usually up: Vestal's Nate Sanzo and Chenango Forks' Zach Kuzemka. Both figure to have a say in the STAC title chase this season. Last season, Sanzo was part of a Golden Bears team that won the Section 4 Class AA title and also earned its third straight STAC title with a 2-2 tie against Horseheads. The senior has 45 goals in his first three seasons and is 19 short of the Vestal goal record of 64 held by 2000 graduate Mike Skonieczki. "Nate is just a super guy," Vestal coach Jim Murphy said. "Everyone loves him, he's a team player that comes through with incredible individual stats." Despite losing last year's leading goal-scorer, Joe Hogan, Sanzo should receive help from the new junior varsity additions, including Brian Rose. With a solid nucleus intact, the Golden Bears expect to be as competitive if not more so than last year's squad. "We have a bunch of guys that have a passion for the sport," Sanzo said. "But if we don't score goals, I'm definitely going to take blame for it." Vestal could receive stiff competition in the East division from Ithaca. The Little Red is returning two 2005 Metro/West All-Conference players in seniors Graham Nekut and Cody Pitzer. Meanwhile, Kuzemka, who had 27 goals and 14 assists last season, is a major reason why the Blue Devils should factor in the East Division race after narrowly losing out to Seton Catholic Central last season. "If I had to pick between Sanzo and Kuzemka it would be Sanzo because he plays (a more competitive league schedule)," Susquehanna Valley coach Al Mydlinski said. "But I don't think any one player will have a bigger impact on his team and his division more than Kuzemka." Seton CC edged Forks by a half game last season to win the East Division in large part to head-to-head success. The Saints beat Forks, 3-1, on their home field and played to a 2-all tie at Forks. The Saints hope to repeat as division winners with their senior midfield trio of Chris Messina, Max Jones, and Keenan Dowd. "No question there is a rivalry there," said Kuzemka said. In the Central Division, Owego and Maine-Endwell will likely duel for the title. Defending Central champion Owego is led by freshman Mike Spadine, who scored 18 goals as an eighth-grader last season. "He has a complete nose for the goal," Owego coach Jason Luke said. Friday, August 25 STAC Soccer: divisions and teams From the Binghamton Press: EAST DIVISION CHENANGO FORKS * Coach: Don Brozovic. * Last year's finish: second. * Opener: August 28th vs. Windsor. * Top Returning players: Zach Kuzemka, sr., midfielder; Jeff Creagh, sr., stopper; Tim Galla, jr., midfielder; Eric Kubisa, sr., sweeper. * Outlook: Last season's 1-0 loss to Trumansburg in the Section 4 Class B title game provided a disappointing end to the season, but that hasn't quelled expectations. "We're definite title contenders," Brozovic said. Kuzemka, the East Division's leading scorer last season, is back for his third varsity season. CHENANGO VALLEY * Coach: Mike Andrew. * Last year's finish: Fourth. * Opener: Today vs. Windsor. * Top Returning players: Steve Hunt, sr., sweeper; Eric Bidwell, jr., midfielder; Pat Pierce, sr., midfielder; James Walsh, jr., midfielder. * Outlook: Mike Biviano will be this year's goalie, enabling Hunt, who was last year's goalie, to be utilized as a sweeper. That's not the only change for an inexperienced Warriors' squad that lost 11 seniors from last year's team. SETON CC * Coach: Bob Eckler. * Last year's finish: First. * Opener: August 28th vs. Chenango Valley. * Top Returning players: Chris Messina, sr., midfielder; Max Jones, sr., sweeper; Keenan Dowd, sr., midfielder; Matt Keefe, sr., defender. * Outlook: In Eckler's 10th season as head coach, he describes this team as "a working man's team, nothing flashy, they just work hard." Last season, the Saints held off Chenango Forks to win the division by a half game. To defend its title, Seton will have to make up for the loss of 11 seniors from last year. SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY * Coach: Al Mydlinski. * Last year's finish: Third. * Opener: August 26th vs. Whitney Point. * Top Returning players: Ryan Mitchell, sr., striker; Brandon Freeland, sr., defender; Pat Reardon, sr., defender. * Outlook: With Freeland and Reardon, defense will be a strong point for the Sabers entering this season. However, with only five seniors on a 17-man roster, SV could be a year away from regaining their perch among Section 4's elite. Forward Eran Crockett and midfielder Jordan Godbout are a few of the players up from last season's unbeaten JV team that have been impressive in practice. "Both of them have showed they can play at varsity speed and have solidified their position," Mydlinski said. WHITNEY POINT * Coach: Robert Hesch. * Last year's finish: Sixth. * Opener: Saturday at Susquehanna Valley. * Top Returning players: Dan Longo, sr., midfielder; R.J. Beck, sr., goalie; Jordan Dean, sr., defender; Dan Arseneau, so., midfielder. * Outlook: The Golden Eagles will be starting five sophomores as they hope to improve on last year's last-place finish. One of the sophomores, Arseneau, returns as last year's second leading goal scorer. WINDSOR * Coach: Jeff Nolan. * Last year's finish: Fifth. * Opener: Today vs. Chenango Valley. * Top Returning players: Tyler Faulkner, sr., midfielder; Brenton Jones, so., forward; Joe Graziano, sr., defender; Dan Martinson, sr., forward. * Outlook: In their sixth season in STAC, Windsor might finally be ready to make a big push in the East. Jones and Faulkner return as top two goal-scorers from last year for the Black Knights and senior Kevin Holbert returns at goalie. Windsor must overcome inexperience on defense, at least in the early going. CENTRAL DIVISION JOHNSON CITY * Coach: Hristos Dimitriou. * Last year's finish: Third. * Opener: Saturday vs. Owego. * Top Returning players: Terence Bookhout, sr., defender; Joel Collins, sr., midfielder; Ryan Serbonich., sr., forward. * Outlook: Dimitriou, a former Binghamton University men's soccer coach who coached Waverly High last season, takes over for long-time varsity coach Bill Arno, who will coach the JVs. "A winning record is our first goal," Dimitriou said of his 23-player squad, which includes only six seniors. Saturday's opener against Owego could provide an indication of the Wildcats' fortunes. MAINE-ENDWELL * Coach: Duane Rinker. * Last year's finish: Second. * Opener: August 30th at Norwich. * Top Returning players: Danny Hostrander, sr., midfielder; Josh Sailar, sr., midfielder; Andrew Sohn, sr., defender; Eric Rounds, jr., defender. * Outlook: The graduation of leading goal-scorer Kyle Kucharski (now at Binghamton University) was just one of many losses for the Spartans. Six seniors remain but Rinker, in his 30th season as coach, feels this season will depend on how quick the new players - such as junior transfer Scott Pullen - acclimate themselves with one another. ONEONTA * Coach: Alex Brannan. * Last year's finish: Fourth. * Opener: Saturday vs. Norwich. * Top Returning players: Aaron Gallusser, jr., forward; Tim Greenberg, sr., defender; Scott Cobstill, sr., defender; P.J. McMullen, sr., forward. * Outlook: Oneonta could work its way into division title contention for the first time in several seasons. After being saddled with low numbers the past two seasons, Brannan finally has some depth with 24 players on this year's roster, including 17 juniors, among them leading scorer Gallusser. OWEGO * Coach: Jason Luke. * Last year's finish: first. * Opener: Saturday at Johnson City. * Top Returning players: Andy Marzo, sr., forward; Mike Spadine, so., forward; Ryan Kleeves, sr., defender; Michael Suwak, sr., defender. * Outlook: The Indians will rely on Spadine to anchor their high-power offense. As an eight-grader last season, Spadine was the Indians' leading goal scorer with 18. A significant question is who will start at goalie. Tyler Spadine, Mike's twin brother, is in a tight battle with junior Jeff Smith for the starting job. NORWICH * Coach: Hendrix Lowenstein. * Last year's finish: Independent. * Opener: August 26th at Oneonta. * Top Returning players: Kane Streichert, sr., defender; Sado Borcilo, sr., midfielder; Evan Wendt, sr., midfielder; Alex Sanelli, sr., midfielder. * Outlook: First-year coach Lowenstein hopes to build upon last season's four-victory performance. He'll try to do so with a line-up that includes 12 seniors as well as sophomore goalie Joe Krug. "By (Krug's) senior year, he's going to be an awesome player," Lowenstein said. "Matter of fact, he's awesome now." METRO DIVISION BINGHAMTON * Coach: Dan Smith. * Last year's finish: Third. * Opener: Saturday vs. Elmira Southside. * Top Returners: Colin Harder, sr., goalie; Emmanuel Nyei, sr., midfielder; Jeff Marks, jr., midfielder; Sivan Johnson jr., forward. * Outlook: Eleven seniors graduated from a Binghamton squad that finished 10-6-5 last season. With only two returning starters, second-year coach Dan Smith labeled this year "a rebuilding stage." Harder, entering his third year at the varsity level, will try to keep Binghamton competitive and also mentor the team's younger players. Eight players on the 18-player roster are either freshmen or sophomores. ITHACA * Coach: Terry Habecker. * Last year's finish: Second. * Opener: Saturday vs. Endicott. * Key Returners: Seth Barradas, sr., goalie; Graham Nekut, sr., defender; Cody Pitzer, sr., midfielder; Dan Abowd, sr., defender; Arden Freedman, sr., midfielder. * Outlook: Habecker hopes his team will be able to move past last year's 1-0 Section 4 Class AA title-match loss to Vestal. The Little Red could threaten in the Metro Division with 12 seniors back. UNION-ENDICOTT * Coach: Rick Materese. * Last year's finish: Fourth. * Opener: Saturday at Ithaca. * Key Returning players: Robbie Dickinson sr., center midfielder, Chris Ousterout, sr., goalie, Jim Coudriet, sr., defender; Gabe McNaughton, sr., defender; Tim Sagasti, jr., midfielder/forward; Nick Kilmarx, so., midfielder. * Outlook: According to Materese, U-E's fourth-place finish was the first for the school since 1986 and the Tigers had their lowest goal production in 22 years.. Injuries played a key part in the struggles, most notably with Ousterout missing 12 games, though the team did play better toward the end of the season. VESTAL * Coach: Jim Murphy. * Last year's finish: First. * Opener: August 26th vs. Corning. * Top Returning players: Nate Sanzo, sr., attacker; Matt Kristek., jr. midfielder; Marc Hoover, jr., midfielder; Alex Wells, jr. goalie. * Outlook: It's been a fine run for the Golden Bears, who have claimed at least a share of the past three STAC titles as well as last year's Section 4 Class AA title. Leading goal-scorer Joe Hogan graduated but Sanzo, who has 45 goals in his first three years on the varsity, leads a team that should work its way into contention again. Johnson City got on the board quickly, as Joel Collins and Donnie Brkovic both scored in the game's first 15 minutes to give the Wildcats (3-2-1) the early advantage. Max Jones put the Saints (4-1-2) up 1-0 when he scored on a 30-yard direct kick with about 22 minutes left in the first half before Marzo answered with a penalty kick two minutes later for the Indians (4-0-3). Seton CC coach Bob Eckler credited the play of his sweeper Sean Greene and goalie Pat McGinnis (12 saves) in keeping the high-octane Owego offense in check. "It's a strong team," Eckler said of Owego. "They always seem to be a little bit older than us. I didn't think we'd win it, but to come out with a tie, I'll take it." Hostrander scored after Zach Azeb chipped the ball over the Seton CC defense. The ball took a big bounce, and Hostrander beat Seton goalkeeper Pat McGinnis to the ball to give the Spartans (6-2-1, 6-1-1) the victory. "The ground was hard, the ball took a real high bounce and Dan won the challenge," Maine-Endwell coach Duane Rinker said. "It was a good game on both parts. It was a completion of a match suspended Thursday due to inclement weather. Horseheads had advance to the final with Thursday's 4-1 semifinal victory at Susquehanna Valley. Vestal and Horseheads were STAC co-champions last year after playing to a 2-2 tie. Monday, October 23 Girl's Soccer: Seton CC, unbeaten M-E set for STAC showdown By Jonathan Hefetz Press & Sun-Bulletin There may not be a sounding of trumpets but rest assured, there will be a coronation by the time today's Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls soccer championship is over. A new champion will be crowned when East Division champion and host Seton Catholic Central meets Central Division winner Maine-Endwell at 3:30 p.m. at the B.C. United field in West Corners. Defending champ Union-Endicott was bumped from this season's semifinals by the Saints (11-2-3 overall), who advanced on penalty kicks Friday after the teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation and two overtimes. One interested spectator was M-E head coach Chris Holleran. "We were really impressed with Seton," Holleran said. "They adapt well to whatever we throw at them ... we're definitely taking them more seriously." The Spartans, who coasted through the regular season, beat Horseheads 2-1 in overtime in Friday's other semi to improve to 17-0 overall. "We met them once this season so we each know what the other is going to look like," Seton Catholic head coach Stu Bumgardner said, referring to a 2-1 loss to M-E on Sept. 22. "We're looking forward to the rematch." Both teams boast plenty of offense; four players have scored 20 or more goals this season. M-E's Stefani Knopick has 26 and Jessica Loretz has netted 22. Seton is led by Megan Bellingham with 24 and Jacqui Fritsch with 20. "It should be a good clean game," Bumgardner said. "(M-E is) very active and they'll press on us." Holleran said he expects a fast-paced game. "They've got some top guns," he said. "I'm glad they're not in our division." Monday, October 23 STAC Men's Final: Horseheads 2, Vestal 1 in OT By Mike Mangan Press & Sun-Bulletin HORSEHEADS -- Andrew McIntosh won't have to worry about the one that got away. The Horseheads senior, who failed to convert on a penalty kick with eight seconds left in regulation, scored the game-winning goal with 5:47 remaining in the second overtime as the Blue Raiders won the Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys soccer title with a 2-1 victory over Vestal on Saturday. It was the second straight STAC title and the first outright title for Horseheads (14-2-2) since it joined STAC in 1999. Horseheads and Vestal were STAC co-champions last year after playing to a 2-2 tie after overtime. For the Golden Bears (14-3-1), the loss ended their streak of three consecutive years with at least a share of the STAC title. Tuesday, October 24 Fritsch's goals lead Seton CC to first STAC title, Saints hand Maine-Endwell first loss
Press & Sun-Bulletin WEST CORNERS -- With a pair of unbeatens in Union-Endicott and Maine-Endwell among this year's Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls soccer playoff participants, it wasn't a stretch to say Seton Catholic Central was an afterthought in the league title picture. And yet, on a cold Monday afternoon at the B.C. United Soccer Association Complex at Ann G. McGuinness Elementary School, there were the Saints, hoisting the STAC championship trophy after a stunning 4-2 victory over M-E. With Jacqui Fritsch scoring twice and Megan Bellingham once and each notching an assist, and a fine performance by goalie Anderson Conte, the Saints (12-2-3) won their first STAC title. "We've grown used to being the small school and doing well in STACs but maybe not winning the championship," Seton CC coach Stu Bumgardner said. "This is a very exciting for me. I'm so happy for these girls. They gave incredible effort all season and it's paid off for them." Seton CC, who lost to U-E 1-0 in last year's STAC final, had advanced to Monday's title game on penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless tie with U-E on Friday. In that semifinal match, Seton CC was outshot, 26-6. On Monday, it was playing an M-E squad ranked first in the state in Class A by the New York State Sports Writers Association. Plus, the Spartans had beaten the Saints, 2-1, on Sept. 22 in a regular-season meeting. But it was Seton CC that broke a 2-all tie midway through the second half, courtesy of -- for M-E at least -- a wayward carom. On the play, Fritsch sent a corner kick from the right side toward the M-E net. The Spartans' Colleen Marasco, trying to clear the ball, inadvertantly headed the ball into the net for an own goal that put the Saints up 3-2 with 23:31 remaining. "That can happen to anybody," Marasco said. "My body wasn't facing the right way. I should have done a better job. It's just unfortunate it happened at that time." Fritsch made it a two-goal lead with 26 seconds remaining when she scored off a corner kick from Bellingham. But it was Fritsch's first goal that ultimately swung momentum in Seton CC's favor. With M-E (17-1) holding a 2-1 lead early in the second half and having largely controlled play to that point, Fritsch took possession of a loose ball just before midfield. Dribbling past four M-E defenders, Fritsch worked her way into the Spartans box before firing a shot inside the left post past goalie Cassandra Heath to tie the match at 2 with 27:44 left. "Jacqui always thinks she can take the ball the whole length of the field," Bumgardner said with a chuckle. "And on occasion, she proves she can. She's incredible she's got great skills. "It was surprising to see her do it against a team like M-E." Added Fritsch: "Sometimes you have to start the fire. Even if I hadn't made it, I think something would have gone in afterwards." Perhaps Fritsch was right, because after her goal Seton CC controlled the match, garnering most of the significant offensive opportunities. However, M-E did have a chance to tie with five minutes remaining and trailing 3-2 when Marasco lofted a high shot from about the 20-yard line. Conte, who made 11 saves, timed her jump perfectly, leaping up to deflect the ball over the crossbar and preserving Seton CC's lead. "I waited for it, and I just tried my best (to stop it)," said Conte matter-of-factly. M-E coach Chris Holleran was clearly disappointed in the outcome but took solace in what he felt was a strong effort from his girls. "We had some ups and downs, but one game doesn't decide the whole season," Holleran said. "Even down two goals, our girls were still battling out there, We just didn't have the day we wanted to have. "It would have been nice to go the whole season unbeaten, but (being) 17-1, I can't complain." M-E took a 1-0 lead with 25:57 remaining in the first half when Marasco scored off a rebound, her 25-yard shot sailing over Conte and into the net. Bellingham answered with 11:17 remaining, belting a left-legged 25-yard shot from the center of the field just inside the left post to knot the score at 1. M-E regained the lead, 2-1, when Taylor Kucharski got just enough of a shot off a cross from Jamie Holiday, her shot trickling into the right side of the net with 5:52 left in the first half. After that, pretty much everything went Seton CC's way. "We have a pretty young team," Bellingham said. "I think it was a case of getting used to playing with each other. The timing is starting to fall into place, and everything is coming together at the right time." Maine-Endwell 2 0 -- 2 Seton CC 1 3 -- 4 Maine-Endwell goals-assists: Colleen Marasco 1-0, Taylor Kucharski 1-0, Jamie Holiday 0-1. Seton CC g-a: Jacqui Fritsch 2-1, Megan Bellingham 1-1. M-E also had an own goal. Goalie saves: Cassandra Heath (M-E), 7; Anderson Conte (SCC), 11. Shots-corners: M-E 15-4; Seton CC 14-6. United fields in West Corners. "(Notre Dame) came out real hard... and we came out flat-footed," SCC coach Stu Bumgardner said. "I told my girls the season ends in a heartbeat. One minute you're in it, the next you're out. Now, we're out." Lawes scored the game-winner for Notre Dame (14-4) in the 18 minutes into the match and eight minutes later added her second.
