Thursday, August 28 Pre-Season Press Reporting From the Binghamton Press: High School Soccer: Many suitors in position to make run in STAC Graduation hurts Owego's chance for title three-peat BY MIKE MANGAN Press & Sun-Bulletin It sounds a bit odd at first when you're the defending state Class B boys soccer champions and your coach is talking about playing the role of spoiler this season. But look at the fact that Owego lost 70 percent of its scoring from last season due to graduation, and perhaps it's not that far-fetched. That said, the Indians should still be solid this year, but the two-time defending STAC champions will be joined by a host of teams that can stake a claim to being league title contenders. In the Central Division alone, Johnson City, Maine-Endwell and Susquehanna Valley all figure to field strong teams this season. "We need some guys to pick up the slack," Owego coach Bob Devan said. "We're going to be competitive, but when you look at the numbers and especially the offensive talent, we're going to have to work hard." Among the All-Conference players Owego lost to graduation were midfielders Tim and Tom Fahl, forward Bo Grechka and goalie Ryan Bertoni. But All-Conference stopper Ian Fairlie returns, as does attacker Steve Blackwell and midfielder Dillon Tiddick. Peter Franz, a sophomore, will be the starting goalie. "He has (junior varsity) experience, as well as other soccer experience that have helped him in the field," Devan said of Franz. The other division races figure to be pretty open as well. Union-Endicott, Vestal, and Ithaca are all Metro Division threats, and in the East Division, Seton Catholic Central is the top pick with Oneonta a contender. Horseheads and Elmira Free Academy figure to battle for the West Division title. METRO DIVISION Defending Metro champion U-E returns second all-state midfielder Adam Chavez as well as leading scorer Ryan Dickinson. Other key senior players for U-E include goalie Josh Manning, defenders Mike Santacrose and Dave Galkowski, and midfielders Kyle Stepanovsky and Kevin Anglin. "This is a blue-collar team," U-E coach Rick Materese said. "We don't have the names we've had in the past, but they've been working real hard." * Vestal lost quite a few seniors from last year's team. Midfielders Josh Gelser and Pete Walsh and defenders Dan Cirillo, Andy Clark and Chris Borne are among the returnees with varsity experience. The Golden Bears also have several players up from its JV team that went 18-0 last year, including sophomore Joey Hogan and freshman Nate Sanzo, who were the top scorers. Kyle Bigney, a junior up from the JV, will be the starting goalie. "We have a good mix of guys coming back and some good kids from the JV," Vestal coach Jim Murphy said. "I think we're looking stronger than we were last year at this time." * Binghamton has sweeper Jake Binkiewicz and goalie Tyler Pelella back. The midfield looks good with all the starters back, including Chris Tifft. * Ithaca returns midfielder Alex Botwinick, who scored more than 20 goals last year, as well as junior Nick True-Palmer (midfielder) and senior Oliver Harwood (forward). Jon Lynch will key the Little Red's defense, and senior Michael Farthing-Kohl will move around the lineup quite a bit. CENTRAL Johnson City could have its best chance at the Central Division title in several years. The Wildcats (7-6-4 in 2002) return many key players, including forwards Sean Pipkin (11 goals), Steve DePersis (10 goals) and Scott DePersis (7 goals) as well as sweeper Matt Palmer, midfielder Joe McAfee, and defender Joe Bailey. Goalie Justin Carpenter returns in net, and sophomores Mike Tesar and Rocky Vitale -- both up from the JV -- bring extra offense. "We're going to be balanced," JC Bill Arno said. "We could be on top. I think anyone that's watched us the last couple of years can see that we improved quite a bit." * Maine-Endwell lost three of its top players to graduation, Geoff Sanford, Dan Magill and goalie Drew Disbrow. But the Spartans return virtually everyone else. Among the top guys back are senior defender Rick Dunn and junior Jason Nachman. Colin Valenta, Jarrett Newby and Kyle Cummings all are returning starters on defense. * Susquehanna Valley, the East Division champion last year, switches divisions with Oneonta. The Sabers have plenty of firepower back offensively with junior forward Scott Hartley, who scored more than 20 goals last year, and junior midfielder Mike Morris. Juniors Matt Zynda, Andy Thompson also return, but there is plenty of inexperience on defense that will have to be overcome. EAST DIVISION Seton Catholic Central had a solid season last year, going 12-8 and finishing second behind SV. This year, the Saints are in position to do much better. With 18 players who will seek playing time, among them 10 returning starters, SCC has one of its deepest teams in years. Morgan Messina (12 goals) and Mike Aingworth (7 goals) are the top returning scorers, and Mike Bolan, Zach Boyko, and Sean Fitzpatrick are all in at least their third year on the varsity, with Bolan in his fourth year. * Oneonta has low numbers with only 13 varsity players. The Yellowjackets do return goalie Ken Luettger and defender Tasi Karabinis. They will be joined by defender Greg Mattice, and midfielders Aaron Payne and Jared Shue, all in their first full year on the varsity. * Chenango Valley returns senior midfielders Chris Tiffany and Jon Fenson. Other key players include twins Justin and Jason Stenta, who will play defense and goalie, respectively. * Chenango Forks returns 13 players , so improvement is likely. Stopper Jon Collins, center midfielder Jon Edwards and forward Justin Crea are the top returning players. On defense, junior Greg Abbe will start in goal. Brian Evans is the top defender. * Whitney Point has Corey Peterson and Matt Jerauld to lead the defense. Brothers Colin and Nolan Tripp will lead the offense. Windsor's hopes for improvement hinge on returners Steve Kuzma (goalie), Justin Bronson (midfielder), Bob Evans (midfielder) and Ryan Brown (defense). © 2003 Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin Saturday, August 30 Seton 10, Windsor 0 See attached video of Seton's first goal of the year: Ryan Kopyar, assist Zach Boyko. After a pass from Dillon Tiddick to Fairlie on the left corner, Fairlie got by a defender and ripped the ball into the far corner for a 6-5 lead. In the next three minutes after Fairlie's goal, Steve Blackwell and Mike Soltis added goals to cap the scoring. "(Ian's) was a pretty goal, and that just lit everybody's fire," Owego coach Bob Devan said. "He just got everybody energized. Press & Sun-Bulletin VESTAL -- After a five-year absence, the Vestal boys soccer team is back in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference title match. Jeff Warfle broke a scoreless tie late in the first half, and Joe Hogan and Chris Bomysoad added second-half goals as the Golden Bears defeated Seton Catholic Central, 3-0, in a STAC semifinal Thursday. Vestal -- which last appeared in the STAC finals in 1998, a 2-1 loss to Union-Endicott -- will host Horseheads, a 2-1 winner Thursday over two-time defending STAC champion Owego, for the championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Owego. With the match scoreless 33 minutes into play, Vestal (15-2) finally broke through for its first goal against SCC (14-3). Peter Walsh took a free kick from just outside the box and chipped it toward the right side of the Saints' net. Warfle worked his way through traffic, took control of the ball and booted about a 6-yard shot past SCC keeper Christian Valenti near the right post, giving Vestal a 1-0 lead with 6:39 remaining in the first half. "It was a perfect chip, and I managed to race in there and curved it into the corner," Warfle said. "It wasn't until the last second until I realized it wasn't shot (from Walsh)." Vestal had the wind at its back in the first half, but the Golden Bears actually were more dominant in the second half going into the wind, putting the match away with goals by Hogan and Bomysoad. Hogan scored his team-leading 23rd goal of the season with 24:31 remaining after Valenti gave up a rebound on a long shot from Chad Kies and Hogan picked up the loose ball and fired in a shot from just inside the box. Bomysoad scored with 11:54 remaining, off an assist from Walsh, to increase the lead to 3-0 and remove any doubt. "This team has more ingredients for a championship team than the ones I've had the last several years," Vestal coach Jim Murphy said. "We might have had the defense, or the goalkeeping in the past, but this year's team has everything. We have no weak positions in our starting team." Seton CC 0 0 -- 0 Vestal 1 2 -- 3 Vestal goals-assists: Jeff Warfle 1-0, Walsh 0-2, Hogan 1-0, Kies 0-1, Bomysoad 1-0. Goalie saves: Christian Valenti (SCC), 8; Kyle Bigney (V), 6. Sunday, November 2 Seton Upset in Section 4 Finals From the Binghamton Press: Southern Cayuga 2, SCC 1 Despite its domination, Seton Catholic Central's season ended when Josh Mitchell scored with 8:22 remaining to give Southern Cayuga a 2-1 victory in the Section 4 Class C championship match. SCC outshot Southern Cayuga, 11-3, and spent virtually all of the second half in the Chiefs' half of the field. But Ben Jackson sent a long ball from the Southern Cayuga defensive zone toward Mitchell, who outraced two Saints defenders before receiving the ball just inside the right side of the box. He then fired a low shot to the left of the goal that beat keeper Christian Valenti for the winning goal. "I was just running as hard as I could, I had to get to the ball," Mitchell said. "I was very surprised, I was looking more for a foul than to get a shot off." Jackson scored with 23:03 left to give Southern Cayuga a 1-0 lead, but SCC (16-4) tied it with just under a minute left on Mike Aingworth's goal. It appeared SCC would have no trouble getting the go-ahead goal, but the Chiefs' defense would not break. "They certainly packed it in on defense which made it difficult," SCC coach Bob Eckler said. "Their plan was to send long balls, and their concept worked for them and didn't for us." Southern Cayuga 1 1 -- 2 Seton CC 0 1 -- 1 Southern Cayuga goals-assists: Ben Jackson 1-1, Josh Mitchell 1-0, Jon Hughes 0-1. Seton Catholic Central g-a: Mike Aingworth 1-0, Pat McGrath 0-1. Goalie saves: Tim Chase (S.Cayuga), 5; Christian Valenti (SCC), 1. Shots-corners: Seton CC 11-11; S. Cayuga 3-2. Thursday, November 6 Seton Boys Soccer Banquet Sunday, Nov 16th!
