Sunday, October 28 Seton's title run ends in overtime From the Binghamton Press: Adam Potter scored with 58 seconds left in the second overtime as ninth-seeded Marathon upset no. 1 seed Seton Catholic Central, 3-2, Saturday in a Section 4 Class C boys socer quarterfinal at Green Field in Johnson City. Seton CC (12-6-1) had won the last three Section 4 Class C titles. Marathon (13-5) plays at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in a semifinal at Greene, the fourth seed. "It's hard to stay on top -- everybody wants to beat you," SCCcoach Bob Eckler said. "That's just the way it went [Saturday]. We didn't play poorly. We had some opportunities in the overtimes, but it seemed like you were against the wind the whole game. It was really tough." Potter's game-winning shot was aided by the wind when he scored off a long kick from the middle of the field. Seton CC's Mike Bola snapped a scoreless game with a goal four minutes into the second half. Six minutes later, Pat May scored for a 2-0 lead. Marathon answered with two goals in a six-minute span, including Phillip Reise's goal that tied the game with 13 minutes left in regulation. May's first goal eight minutes into the second half snapped a 1-all tie. He added his second goal six minutes later. "We had a slow start," SCC coach Bob Eckler said. "We had some good chances for a couple of goals early but we couldn't capitalize. They were a fast, physical team." Mark Mata also scored for the top-seeded Saints (12-4-1), who host Marathon (12-5) in a quarterfinal game Saturday. Marathon beat Trumansburg, 5-1. From the Binghamton Press: Chenango Forks erased a two-goal, first-half deficit and played visiting Seton Catholic Central to a scoreless deadlock through two 10-minute overtime periods Tuesday for a 2-2 tie in Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys soccer. Tim Zevotek's goal three minutes into the second half drew the Blue Devils within 2-1, and Mike Doyle converted Andy Evans' crossing pass into the equalizer 31 minutes into the half for the Blue Devils, who were 0-2 a season ago against the Saints. "Our defense was superb. Defense and goalkeeping, that's what saved us today," said Forks coach Don Brozovic, citing the efforts of sweeper Jon Edwards, stopper Ron Sanzo and goalkeeper John Stoeckel. Both teams are 1-0-1. Wednesday, September 19 Second OT loss From the Binghamton Press: ONEONTA 4, SETON CC 3 Dan Colone's deflection of a Pete Gobel shot with 2:45 left in the second overtime gave Oneonta (3-3-1) a victory over Seton Catholic Central (2-3-1) in a STAC showdown. It was the only time the Yellow Jackets led. Oneonta rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, tying the game for the final time at 6:48 of the first overtime period. Matt Shea's 35-yard shot knotted the score at 3 only 36 seconds after Morgan Messina had reclaimed the lead for Seton. "Any time you're down in overtime, you think the other team is going to hold on," Oneonta coach Alex Brannan said. "At that point, it was real crucial for us to score. It definitely lifted our team a little bit, and I think it sort of deflated them."
