From the Binghamton Press:
East Division
Chenango Forks
* Coach: Jarod McMullen.
* Last year's record: 12-8-1.
* Season opener: Saturday, vs. Seton Catholic Central.
*
Outlook: After a surprising run to the state Class B semifinals last
season, expectations are high this season for the Blue Devils. The team
must overcome significant graduation losses, in particular high-scoring
midfielders Chris Spear and Tyler Gill that leave some question marks
offensively, but the defense should be solid with the return of goalie
Casey Redfern and defenders Stephen Edwards and Corey Gildea. Other key
returners are midfielder Patrick Creagh and forward Corey Bruet.
Chenango Valley
* Coach: Jim Mercik.
* Last year's record: 10-8-1.
* Season opener: Friday, vs. Windsor at Sidney-MANG Tournament.
*
Outlook: A solid core of returning players should enable CV to make
another run at a winning season, though depth is a major concern.
Goalie Brian Wagstaff, one of the top keepers in STAC, is back, as are
Stephen Yurenda (midfield/forward), A.J. Eaton (midfielder), Edo Spahic
(forward), Erik Krukowski (sweeper) and Kyle Moyer (defense). "I'm very
comfortable with this team," first-year coach Mercik said. "We're
fairly balanced, and I think we're going to give teams some good
competition."
Seton Catholic Central
* Coach: David Kendall.
* Last year's record: 5-10.
* Season opener: Saturday, at Chenango Forks.
*
Outlook: The Saints' troubles last season stemmed greatly from the fact
that the team had trouble scoring goals, something Kendall hopes to
remedy this season. The midfield should be solid with seniors Donald
Castelucci, Dan Farrell and Brendan Foley all back, as well as stopper
Tom Torto and defender Mike O'Brien. Goalie Tyler Kendall returns as
well.
Susquehanna Valley
* Coach: Al Mydlinski.
* Last year's record: 15-5-1.
* Season opener: Sept. 2, at Chenango Forks.
*
Outlook: The Sabers lost some major contributors to graduation,
including first-team Class B all-state forward Steve Rathbun, but
enough talent remains so a successful defense of their East Division
crown remains a possibility. Midfielder Pat McKeage and forward Preston
Patak lead the offense, while defenders Spencer Hogan and James McKeage
anchor the defense. Freshman Mike Rood, a center midfielder, returns
after a very strong debut last year.
Windsor
* Coach: Jeff Nolan.
* Last year's record: 7-12.
* Season opener: Friday, vs. Chenango Valley at Sidney-MANG Tournament.
*
Outlook: Gone is first-team Class B all-state forward Brenton Jones,
but eight starters return for the Black Knights, so a winning record
might be within reach. Evan Lippolis and Chad Gerdus anchor the
defense, while forward Brian Barnes and midfielder Hunter Farr will be
counted for major contributions offensively. Midfielder Ray Peterson,
injured most of last season, should provide a lift.
