Friday, November 6 COACH BIANCO LAYS OUT A BASIC PLAN FOR THE WILDCATS
THE KEYS TO A WARWICK VICTORY OVER M-W 1. Neutralize Monroe's Special Teams Often overlooked by the common fan, special teams are a critical factor when two quality opponents play each other. Statistics have proven that field position plays a huge role on the rate a team scores the football. Obviously, the further a team has to move the ball the harder it is for them to score. Conversely, the less a team has to move the ball the easier it is for them to score. This is where Monroe usually gets the upper hand. Their kicker, Patrick Laird, usually kicks the ball into the end zone, forcing opponents to move the ball 80 yards on most possessions against their attacking defense. On the flip side their return game is sound with playmakers all over the place. They usually set up Dan Scalo and the Monroe offense with a short field to score on. To stay in the game, Warwick is going to have to be creative in the kicking game to ensure that Monroe doesn't win the field position battle. I do not feel the Warwick kicker can consistently kick the ball in the end zone, so the cover guys for Warwick are going to have to swarm as a unit and tackle well in space. Look for Warwick to also use a variety of kicks to keep the Monroe return game guessing. Special Teams and neutralizing the field position battle is the 1st key to Victory for Warwick.2. Play great Run Defense on 1st and 2nd down It's not a mystery that when Monroe Woodbury is rolling they are running the football with Scalo and Officer and passing off their run game. They do a great job of staying on schedule on first and second down which sets them up with makeable 3rd downs. This puts a tremendous strain on a defense because of the uncertainty of both the pass and the run. The question that keeps defensive coordinators up all night is, “Do I load up to stop Scalo and Officer or do I sit back to stop Laird and McFarlin?” Teams often gamble to try and stop one or the other and often big plays result. To have a chance, Warwick will have to play great run defense on early downs. If they can do that, MW will have 3rd and longs where Warwick can disguise and mix up their defensive looks to keep MW off guard and guessing. Obviously, this is easier said than done, but if the Warwick defense can play run defense like they did against us last week, they may have enough to get a few crucial stops. 3. Get the Ball to your playmakers in SpaceWarwick’s got plenty of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball who score quickly. You’ve got to wonder if Warwick wants to score quickly or if they want to keep Scalo off the field. If the plan is to keep Scalo on the sideline, then Babin, White, Testa and Careccia will all have to be ready. The Wildcats will have to be creative if MW tries to take away Babin or White, but they should have enough fire power to adjust if that is indeed the Crusaders’ game plan. Also Warwick will have to have a solid pass protection scheme to slow down Ryan Morgan and the rest of the MW Defense. If they can protect White, he can get the ball to the playmakers If not it's going to be a long night.4. Stay together and be ready to battle for 48 minutes The champs aren't going to roll over for anyone. They’re going to make some plays, so Warwick must be ready to fight back and battle the entire length of a football game.I would like to thank Mr. Dusenbury for allowing me to offer my insight into this exciting match up and wish the best of luck to Coach D’Aliso and Coach Sciarra as their teams contend to represent Section Nine football on the road to the dome. -- BILL BIANCO, Newburgh Head Coach |
