SATURDAY PLAYOFF ACTION: CLASSES AA AND B
Warwick QB Rian White 09
Ryan White praises his defense

WARWICK’S DEFENSE LEADS THE WAY IN 20-6 WIN OVER NFA

MIDDLETOWN - Something was missing Saturday night here at Faller Field. The Warwick offense. Through almost three and a half quarters a tough Newburgh defense had kept the Wildcat ‘O’ from denting the scoreboard.

Fortunately for Warwick, its defense, like Newburgh's, also showed up - big time. You can add the purple kick return team, too. It had gotten on the board very early when Dan Marggraff took the opening kickoff and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown. The PAT kick failed but the ‘Cats had the very early lead.

Following that, Warwick did have other early scoring opportunities, but nothing bore fruit. First the Wildcats drove to the NFA 19 late in the first quarter, but with a first down and 10 there, QB Rian White was intercepted by Newburgh’s Kadeem Faison.

The ’Cat’s next possession saw them pick up three first downs in moving from their 43 to the NFA 6. But on a third and goal, White’s fumble was recovered by Newburgh lineman John Carey to snuff that threat.

Midway in the second quarter Newburgh put together its lone scoring drive of the night. Tyrel George returned a punt 18 yards to the Newburgh 41. Four plays later Barry Surrett broke off a 32-yard scamper to the Warwick 21. Then on third down Fred Locklary connected with George on a 19-yard pass to the ‘Cat four. Marcus Spearman powered into the end zone from there with 3:03 left in the half. A bad snap from center spoiled the PAT attempt, however.

The 6-all tie lasted through a defense-dominated third quarter that saw no first downs for the Wildcats and only two by the Goldbacks. Kevin Marion’s interception of a long Brandon Clark aerial helped keep the ’Backs out of the Warwick red zone.

Early in the fourth quarter a 37-yard NFA punt pinned Warwick back at its nine. That’s when the Wildcat offense finally came to life.

A 24-yard White to John Babin pass moved the pigskin to the 44. Four plays later White partially compensated for a penalty and a subsequent fumble that had cost the ‘Cats a combined 17 yards when he hit Sam Careccia for a 14-yard gain.

The he found his money-man, Babin, on a wide receiver screen pass. Babin got a block, split the secondary and turned on the jets for a 43-yard catch and run TD with 6:53 left in the fourth quarter. That gave the Wildcats a 12-6 lead.

Locklary’s 30-yard kickoff return put NFA at its 42. The Goldbacks picked up one first down. Then on a third-and-13 at the Warwick 47, DE Brandon O’Rourke swooped in to sack Clark. Newburgh punted.

Then White spun his magic. On first down the senior broke loose and scored on a 72-yard TD run to put the game away at the 2:50 mark. A White-to-Jesse Testa PAT pass made the final score 20-6.

“Our defense played great and kept us in the game,” White said afterwards.

His coach, James Sciarra, agreed: “For the first time this season, we were led by our defense. Our staff put together a great defensive game plan.”

High-powered Newburgh was held in check. It was the first time the Goldbacks had scored less than double digits since their opening night, 6-0 win over Minisink. Barry Surrett rushed for 118 yards, but it took the outstanding RB 23 carries to obtain that. Meanwhile Clark’s passing line was 7-for-23-for-155 yards.

White, named the game’s offensive MVP, connected on 14-of-24 passes for 164 yards, one interception and one TD. Meanwhile his long TD run boosted his ground stats to 17-for-109 yards. Babin had six receptions for 116 yards. Whatever these guys do keeps adding to their SNF record book resumes.

Winning the defensive MVP award was Warwick junior MLB Andrew Treschitta who had 10.5 tackles on the night.

Warwick’s record is now 8-1. The Wildcats will have a rematch with Monroe-Woodbury in next Saturday’s Class AA title game at Faller Field.

Newburgh finishes its fine season with a healthy 7-2 slate.

MONROE-WOODBURY DEFEATS WARRIORS, 35-6

KINGSTON - Monroe-Woodbury is headed back to another Section Nine Class AA title game in hopes of ultimately returning to Syracuse for its fifth consecutive appearance in the state championship. All-State QB Dan Scalo has been there twice before, and he would like to be a part of a state title before he graduates in June.

Saturday night Scalo scored on runs of 5, 2 and 22 yards and tossed a big 91-yard TD pass and run to stellar wide receiver Patrick Laird to lead the Crusaders to a big 35-6 victory over Minsink Valley at Dietz Stadium.

Joe Lafontant also tacked on a 22-yard fourth quarter TD for Monroe-Woodbury. He and sophomore Ryan Spelman had stepped in to replace Trevor Officer who only had one touch on the night before going to the sideline.

After a scoreless first quarter, Scalo scored his first six-pointer on the first play of the second stanza. Laird then kicked the first of five PATs to make him 57 of 59 for the season.

Scalo’s second TD came at the 5:43 mark of the quarter. But with 48 seconds left before halftime, Minsink QB Kevin Freeman tossed a 17-yard TD pass to Jesse Valenti. Kyle Cazzetta’s PAT was blocked, and the score was 14-6 at intermission.

Scalo’s dazzling 91-yard TD hookup with Laird was thrown from the end zone on third down at 6:26 of the third. The QB’s 22-yard score came at 1:43 of the third to make the score 28-6.

Lafontant and Laird finished the scoring with 8:21 left in the game.

Scalo was the obvious choice for the game’s offensive MVP. The southpaw completed just that one pass in six attempts, but on the ground he gained 126 yards on 20 carries. Meanwhile Spelman, who’s slated to be Scalo’s replacement next year, rushed for 93 yards on 11 carries as both a running back and as a quarterback. Lafontant was eight-for-45 yards.

M-W safety Ryan Morgan, credited with nine tackles and two assists, was named the defensive MVP. In addition, DB Jared McFarlin had two interceptions for the Cru while Anthony Cardone picked one.

For the Warriors, Freeman completed seven-of-18 passes for 84 yards and the TD. Kyle Diesel gained 93 yards on 10 carries while Andrew Haelen rushed 13 times for 56. Valenti had three receptions for 41 yards.

Minsink kicker Cazzetta was credited with an on-the-move, 75-yard punt from his own end zone to the MW 25.

The unbeaten state-ranked #1 Crusaders are now 9-0 and will again face Warwick next Saturday at Faller (7 pm), this time for the sectional AA crown. Minsink finishes with a deceptive 5-4 record. The rugged Warriors’ losses were to M-W (twice), Warwick and Newburgh, the three top teams in Section Nine. And all are state-ranked.

BIG SECOND HALF POWERS HIGHLAND IN B SEMI

KINGSTON - Take one part pride, two parts rivalry and a dose of over-confidence and you have a good Highland - Marlboro football game. Highland, the #1 seed, took the Class B section 9 semi-final game from 4th seeded Marlboro 42-12 Saturday afternoon in the rain at Dietz stadium.

But the game started out much closer than it ended.

Highland started out as expected, scoring first on an 18 yard run by Scott Bolstad with 8:01 left in the 1st quarter. Bolstad, the new found Highland halfback, rushed for 103 yards on 8 carrries with two TDs and also went 6 for 6 with the extra point kicking duty.

Not to be outdone, Kairi Alston scored his first touchdown with 5:14 left in the first quarter to give the Huskies the early 14-0 lead.

It appeared the Huskies may have been taking the Dukes a little bit for granted when the Highland offense coughed up a fumble and the Dukes cashed in on the turnover with a drive which ended with a 17 yard Vincent Porcelli to Maxx Faircloth touchdown pass. But more than that, this seemed to energize the Marlboro team.

This showed up later in the quarter when Highland was going for a first down on a 4th and one on Highland’s side of the 50 yard line. The Duke defense held. Marlboro finished off this drive to the end zone on a 22 yard touchdown scamper by Porcelli. Both of the two point extra-try pass plays, were broken up by the Husky defense.

Highland took the 14-12 halftime lead into the locker room along with a lot of anger and some hurt pride.

Highland directed that anger right back at the Dukes in the second half through 28 unanswered points. Kairi Alston, offensive MVP of the game, scored his second touchdown with less than 3 minutes gone in the third quarter. Alston rushed for 148 yards on 24 carries. He also scored a third touchdown later in the 4th quarter.

On the next Highland defensive sequence, Husky corner Mike Forte intercepted Porcelli and returned the pick 20 yards for the score. At the end of the third quarter, Bolstad scored his second touchdown on a 55 yard sweep play.

Matt Relyea, the Husky quarterback was 2 for 2 for 14 yards and no picks.

Porcelli scrambled for 79 yards and tossed the ball 32 times completing 12 for 116 yards. But the Duke QB was also intercepted 4 times. Once by Cody Weaver, twice by Luiz Rivera, and once by Forte for the pick-6.

Highland (8-0) moves on to the Class B Section Nine finals against O'Neill (6-3) who eliminated New Paltz. The finals will be played next Saturday night (7pm) at Dietz.

O'NEILL DEFENSE DOMINATES NEW PALTZ IN CLASS B SEMI

MIDDLETOWN - The first play of the game from scrimmage didn’t exactly set the tone of the Class B semi-final between O’Neill and New Paltz, but it got things going in a hurry.

O’Neill quarterback Aaron Kilner fired a deep pass to receiver Pat Doty who got behind the New Paltz secondary. Doty made the catch and raced into the end zone for a quick 75-yard TD that gave the third-seeded Raiders a lead over the second-seeded Huguenots that  would hold throughout the game. O’Neill won, 13-6, to advance to the sectional title game against defending champ Highland. That game will be played next Saturday night at Dietz (7 pm).

For Kilner it was a special win. He wanted to have his dad in the stands to see his final game. But his father, Peter, is currently on a special military mission in Afghanistan.

“I hope O'Neill wins; otherwise, I'll miss his final high school game,” the elder Kilner, one of this site‘s correspondents when he‘s not out on assignment, emailed us. “Right now I’m in Herat, Afghanistan. On (semi-final game day) I'll be near the Tajikistan border, but I plan to be home for the championship weekend.”

Kilner the younger had a special smile on his face following the victory that followed an intense football game dominated by the O’Neill defense. Happy for the win and happy he’ll be playing in at least one more high school game - one his dad can attend.

Placekicker Matt Clark missed the point after attempt following that first score and then banged a 27-yard field goal attempt off the left upright on O’Neill’s next possession. But New Paltz didn’t get its initial first down until the first play of the second quarter.

O’Neill dented New Paltz territory twice in the second quarter, but saw its drives stall. Then Mitch McKearn sacked Huguenot QB Kyle Januszkiewicz whose resulting fumble was covered by O’Neill’s Chris Outing at the NP 15. Following an incomplete pass, Raider RB Church Pfeil broke two tackles in going around the right end and into the end zone. Clark’s kick made it 13-0 at the 2:25 mark.

After a scoreless third quarter, New Paltz made a big defensive play when Kyle Nagel blocked a Clark punt to give the Huguenots possession at the O’Neill 2. On fourth and inches, Juan Rolon finally punched the ball across the goal line. A pass for two points after failed, and the score stood at 13-6 with 10:35 left in the fourth quarter.

From that point there would be only a single first down. That came on a 42-yard burst by O’Neill’s Darryle Griffin who was finally caught from behind by speeding Jaamal Clark at the Hugie 46.

The Raiders knew that New Paltz would have to go to the air, so they pressured Januszkiewicz relendlessly. The junior was again in the starting lineup in the absence of Jon Diaz who had suffered a concussion a few weeks back.

Januszkiewicz was sacked five times for 29 yards in losses. In passing, he completed just 4-of-16 for 32 yards. He was also intercepted once (by Ziggy Torres).

Fullback Logan Peterson was the Hugies’ leading rusher with 13 carries for only 23 yards. Januszkiewicz had minus 41 yards on the ground while the team netted but 22 yards.

For the O’Neill defense, Outing had two sacks while the unit caused four turnovers. Meanwhile New Paltz LB Tom Covino (nine tackles) was named the game’s defensive MVP. Huguenot DB John Ferrante had two interceptions.

Workhorse RB Pfeil was named the offensive MVP, rushing 20 times for 93 yards. Meanwhile Kilner completed 7-of-16 passes for 159 yards. That gives Kilner, a four-year starter, 4,144 career yards which places him second in the SNF record book for career passing yardage. His favorite target, Doty, made four catches for 105 yards.

After the game Kilner offered his congratulations to New Paltz and then came the smile. Asked what message he’d like to send to his father, who’s also an instructor at West Point, he smiled again and said, “Nothing. He understands.”

O’Neill’s record is now 6-3 while New Paltz finishes at 3-6.
