RICK STONE RANKS THE TOP SECTION NINE TEAMS THROUGH WEEK SIX
New Paltz L Gordy Pine
New Paltz two-way lineman Gordy Pine

By RICK STONE

The second straight weekend of blowouts gives us a much clearer view of who’s who in Section Nine. This week we’ve expanded to eight teams in each category. So here goes:

LARGE SCHOOLS (CLASSES AA and A)

1. MONROE-WOODBURY (6-0) - The state’s #1 AA team is averaging over 47 points per game so far this season. This Friday the Cru hosts #2 Warwick in a highly-anticipated non-divisional game that could last close to three hours …

2. WARWICK (6-0) - … That long because the Wildcats are averaging almost 43 ppg. Of course both defenses are used to facing the spread in practice, so I could be off by a half hour or so.

3. NEWBURGH (5-1) - While all this week’s hoopla focuses on Central Valley, the very solid Goldbacks are gearing up for huge back-to-back AA-1 contests against Pine Bush and arch-rival Kingston. With Clark back under center, the NFA backfield has both Surrett and Locklary to take handoffs while Spooner and George look for passes.

4. MINISINK VALLEY (4-2) - RB Andrew Haelen is back at full strength making the Warriors look more like the Warriors. The real game of the week (so far as AA-II is concerned) will be this Friday when MV travels to Valley Central. Next week Minisink gets Warwick.

5. WALLKILL (5-1) - The Panthers boosted their winning streak to five with an easy non-league win over lowly Dover. Now they must buck up for Port Jervis and then Cornwall. The four playoff teams in Class A have already been determined. Now those teams play for pride and, more importantly, for seeding.

6. CORNWALL (3-2) - The blitzing Green Dragon defense shut out Port last week while the offense couldn’t really get it going until later in the second half against a frisky PJ defense. Lawlor, Smallwood and a crew of good receivers can strike quickly, however. Cornwall visits up-and-down Goshen this Saturday.

7. KINGSTON (3-3) - The injury-plagued Tigers got a good performance from backup QB Murphy last week, but its defense couldn‘t stop Minisink. Kingston looks to rebound at Middletown Friday.

8. VALLEY CENTRAL (3-3) - We’ll add the Vikings here. Friday night they battle Minisink in a game that should earn the winner a Class AA playoff berth. You gotta like the sparks that RB Nick Osenni, QB Shane MacNamara, WR Zach Adler and RB-Rec Dairis Simpson can provide.

SMALL SCHOOLS (CLASSES B-C-D)

1. HIGHLAND (5-0) - The best thing about a defense that keeps pitching shutouts is that its offense need score only once to win. That’s what happened last week against New Paltz. The Huskies won the sectional crown in ‘08 via its defense and will do so again this season. But to go further, they’ll need to get their offense healthy again. Highland has already clinched top-seed in the B playoffs. This Saturday the Dogs travel to Burke. Then comes Ellenville in a big non-leaguer.

2. ELLENVILLE (6-0) - The Blue Devils have sewn up the top seed in Class C. Friday night 1-5 Pine Plains gets the pleasure of their company. On October 23 the Devils and the Huskies will meet in the Ulster County small school Super Bowl, a fitting tune-up for their respective playoff runs.

3. ELDRED (6-0) - The Yellowjackets got a forfeit when Hancock said it didn’t have enough players to compete last weekend. Eldred would have preferred an on-the-field victory. A week off before meeting Chester in “The Enchanted Forest” is not what Frank Kean really wanted.

4. SULLIVAN WEST (5-1) - The Bulldogs rolled over hapless Onteora, as expected, last week. Now they face what could be a trap game against Spackenkill, which is fighting for a playoff spot, if the Dawgz don’t come to play. But I think the Westies like scoring touchdowns on both offense and defense too much to get blind-sided.

5. O’NEILL (3-3) - The Raiders’ win over Burke clinched them a playoff berth in Class B along with Highland. O’Neill gets Red Hook next in the jumbled battle for the other two playoff slots and seedings. The Raiders want to be #2 to stay away from Highland, the likely #1, in the first round.

6. NEW PALTZ (2-4) - The Hugies lost to Highland, 7-0, last week so we can’t really drop them far. The two-point win over O’Neill back on September 25 was a biggie, but the September 18 loss to Red Hook was a bummer.

7. MILLBROOK (4-2) - The Blazers were overpowered by Ellenville last week, so it’s back to the drawing board. Millbrook heads back over the river to meet Liberty this Friday in a key Class C game. Coach Keenan’s boys will be favored.

8. CHESTER (4-2) - Ron Stover’s Hambo’s lost to O’Neill by 6 in week one and to Section One perennial power Tuckahoe in week three. In their last three games, however, they have averaged over 51 ppg. The big win was over Class C Spackenkill (56-14) in week five. Now they have their annual regular season duel for top seed in D with Eldred.
