ANOTHER COACHING NOTE: Sullivan West’s Ron Bauer has tied former Middletown coach Dick Wolslayer with 142 coaching wins. That’s good for fourth place on our winningest coaches list. HURTIN’ TWO-WAY TERRORS: Highland’s Josh Duggan (leg) leads the Huskies in both tackles and touchdowns. Teammate Cody Weaver (broken hand) intercepted a New Paltz pass. QUOTES OF THE WEEK: “That’s 19 quarters in a row without giving up a point. As long as you do that, it’s tough to lose games.” -- Carl Relyea, the head coach of unbeaten Highland … “we started out as a running team this year, but we’ve been banged up and only have three or four running backs left. But we did enough to win.” -- Matt Relyea, the coach’s son and quarterback … “We talked about not coming out flat (off the bye week), but we did … Offensively, we got off to a very slow start. I felt like I wanted to go out there and push our guys… On defense (MLB Joe) Terribile did a great job of shutting down (PJ‘s) Tim Crown (who netted minus-1 yard on 10 carries).” -- Cornwall coach Marcus Hughes ... “As usual, Brandon Tompkins was the heart of our defense.” -- Liberty coach John Wilhelm whose team stayed alive in the quest for a Class C playoff spot … “I’m glad it’s over so we can get back to football.” -- Monroe-Woodbury coach Pat D’Aliso after becoming the winningest football coach in Section Nine. On M-W’s being named the first New York team to be ranked in the Rivals High Top 100 nationally, D’Alsio said, “It’s an honor. If it is out there and it is good, we embrace it.” … “One thing I learned from coach (D‘Aliso) is that you cannot get to where you want to go without working hard for it.” -- Dan Scalo, M-W’s record-setting, two-time all-state QB… “When I started coaching, we came out in a spread. It didn’t do that much for us, so I tried to balance it more between running and passing. Keeping it simple became our philosophy. This way coaches don’t make mistakes. If mistakes are made, they are made on the field by the players. I learned that from (former Marlboro coach) Dennis Burkett.” -- Coach Tony Borriello of unbeaten Ellenville … “Ellenville handed us our (butt) again today. They physically dominated us all day. Coach B. has his team playing real hard and with class. He is a good guy. We have a big problem playing real physical teams.” -- Millbrook coach Sean Keenan. EXTRA POINTS: NFA’s Barry Surrett sat out Saturday’s game at Washingtonville, so with QB Brandon Clark (shoulder) now pronounced healthy, Fred Locklary moved back to RB … With all the banged-up players in the section, Cornwall was fortunate to get some good news. DB/RB Justin Van Wygerden is expected to return to the Green Dragon lineup after missing most of last year and the first six games of this season. “He’s probably our best player,” Coach Hughes says, “and he’s anxious to get back into action. He’s been smacking everybody in practice.” … SOME FEARLESS GAME COMMENTARY: Port Jervis had its chances Friday against Cornwall. Three times in the first half the Raider offense visited the Dragon Red Zone, but a near-miss on a 37-yard field goal attempt, an interception by Colin Kelly and Tom Pinder’s blitzing 4-3 defense shut the Raiders out. Meanwhile a 52-yard Tyler Lawlor - to - Kelly TD pass with 2:36 left in the second quarter and a Ken Kirshner PAT was all the scoring in a first half dominated by the defensive play of Cornwall’s Tom Terribile (who shadowed Tim Crown all night) and Port’s Joey Maillet (who kept Tyree Smallwood in check until Maillet was forced to the sideline in the second half). Nobody in red and black was spying on Lawlor, however, who scooted through some gaping holes provided by his o-line. In the second half Port drove to the Dragon 30 where the defending champs’ defense again stiffened. A subsequent bad center snap screwed up a Port punt effort and a chance to put Cornwall deep in its own territory. Soon after that miscue, the veteran Kirshner booted his field goal. Then early in the fourth quarter, QB Chris Stawski drove PJ to the Dragon 10. But Terribile stuffed Crown, James Gragnano picked Stawski, and that was all she wrote. Lawlor’s 66-yard run then set up his subsequent 15-yard TD jaunt. Later PJ failed on a fourth and five at its own 25. Smallwood went to work from there for the final TD. Coach Mark Trotta knows well that Port’s offensive line play is the key to its success or lack of such this year. Invisible against physical Saugerties, it failed; against Goshen it looked as if it had come of age. Cornwall’s stubborn 7-on-6 approach set the Raiders back a notch. |
