RICK STONE'S RANKINGS THROUGH WEEK TWO
Eldred G-MLB Geno Jones
Eldred G-MLB Geno Jones

By RICK STONE

We’ll expand the rankings this week to 10 large and eight small school teams. But this weekend could bring some big changes, so hang onto what could be a wild ride in some spots.

LARGE SCHOOLS (CLASSES AA and A)

1. MONROE-WOODBURY (2-0) - Old Professor Rich Michaelis tells me that since the Crusaders’ last SNF loss (35-0 to Newburgh in 2003 title game), the Crusaders have now reeled off 23 straight division victories, 43 straight Section Nine triumphs and 45 straight regular season wins. The Section Nine total includes the sectional playoffs and the regular season games plus regular season out of section games. I’ll take his word.

2. WARWICK (2-0) - Last weekend they scored 42 points in a shortened game. Now the ‘Cats should get a test at Kingston.

3. NEWBURGH (2-0) - The Goldbacks found their offense last week as they outgunned Binghamton by three TD.

4. KINGSTON (2-0) - New coach Jeramie Collins is enjoying the high life so far. Now the coach, a defensive specialist like Rex Reed, gets to figure a way to slow down Warwick.

5. MINISINK VALLEY (0-2) - We’ll give the Warriors the benefit of the doubt again this week. They opened against M-W and NFA. Now their offense needs to show a lot of life as 0-2 Washingtonville comes to South Centerville.

6. VALLEY CENTRAL (1-1) - The Vikings played without starting QB Shane MacNamara last week against Kingston. He’ll be back for FDR Friday afternoon, however.

7. WALLKILL (1-1) - The tough Panthers gave Coach Brian Vegliando his first win last week against AA Horseheads. Goshen comes to town Thursday for a Class A opener.

8. CORNWALL (1-1) - The Dragons romped over New Paltz last week. Now they travel to Saugerties for a big Class A showdown. Marcus Hughes’ young team will only get better and better.

9. PINE BUSH (1-1) - The Bushmen shook off the week one “Warwick Effect” and turned Carlos Guzman loose on Washingtonville.

10. SAUGERTIES (2-0) - The Sawyers easily dismissed B Marlboro last week, but now they get defending champ Cornwall.

ON THE CUSP: Port Jervis (1-1) which would rather not be facing a bye week after the big 28-7 win over Middletown.

SMALL SCHOOLS (CLASSES B-C-D)

1. HIGHLAND (2-0) - The Huskies are off to a great start, as expected. In their two opening games, Highland outscored its opponents by the combined score of 82-8. Now it’s O’Neill’s turn for a shot at upending the defending Class B champs. As good as the big dogs are, Highland can’t afford to take its foot off the pedal.

2. SULLIVAN WEST (2-0) - Speaking of Dawgz, this pack is hanging with a rough bunch. The Sully West Bulldogs travel to Millbrook Thursday for what should be a classic early season Class C showdown.

3. ELLENVILLE (2-0) - The defending C champs entertain Spackenkill Thursday, but you can bet that a Blue Devil coach or two will be filming the Sullivan West-Millbrook war.

4. MILLBROOK (2-0) - Millbrook’s power game and Sully West’s spread will provide quite a contrast. Defenses will determine this one.

5. O’NEILL (1-1) - The Raiders handed Pascack Hills three first half scoring situations and paid the price. Now things get real serious as Kilner and the boys head for Highland.

6. BURKE CATHOLIC (1-1) - The Eagles may be ranked a little too high here. We’ll see Friday if they can defeat pumped-up Marlboro on the Dukes’ new carpet and under their new lights in a B showdown.

7. (tie) ELDRED (2-0) - Eldred has a very strong senior-laden squad which is looking to award retiring coach Frank Kean with more than a sectional title. Liberty will provide a nice non-league test Friday.

7. (tie) CHESTER (1-1) - Between Sections Nine and One there are only five Class D teams, and Section Nine is hungry (starved) for a Class D regional title. Chester beat Haldane by 14 last week and it gets Tuckahoe Thursday on the road.

ON THE CUSP: There are still some good teams lurking here. Which one(s) will step up this week? Marlboro? Red Hook? Spackenkill? Liberty?
