Saturday, November 21 BURNT HILLS NUS-BAUMS CORNWALL IN EASTERN STATE SEMI
KINGSTON - Junior running back Evan Nusbaum rushed for 320 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Section Two’s unbeaten Burnt Hills to a 41-16 victory over Cornwall in the Eastern State Semi-Final at Dietz Stadium Friday night. Overall Burnt Hills rushed for 443 yards on 43 carries to catapult the Spartans to their second straight Class A state championship game. Next Saturday they’ll meet Section Six’s Sweet Home which beat Whitesboro, 36-13, in the Western semi in Rochester. Last year Sweet Home defeated Burnt Hills for the state title. Back at Dietz the defenses dominated early in the game. Then the fifth series saw Burnt Hills’ powerful offense come to life as the Spartans drove 86 yards in only six plays. Tyler Paluba got things started with a 21-yard run and Nusbaum capped the drive with a 28-yard dash down the left sideline at 3:13 of the first quarter. Nusbaum also kicked the conversion (he would be five-or-five on the night). Back-to-back runs of 30 and 21 yards by Tyler Lawlor and Tyree Smallwood then helped set up a 32-yard Ken Kirshner field goal with 20 seconds left in the quarter. But that’s as close as the Green Dragons would get to the Spartans for the rest of the night. After taking the ensuing kickoff, Burnt Hills drove 84 yards in 11 plays. A big 29-yard, third down pass completion to Keaton Flint from QB Phil Neumann put the ball at the Cornwall 49. An eight-yard run by Brandon Beatty and a personal foul against the Dragons moved the pigskin to the 26. Nusbaum’s 16-yard ramble to the four set up Beatty’s two-yard TD run at 6:52 to make it 14-3. The Cornwall offense roared back, thanks to a pair of Lawlor-to-Stephen Natale passes that netted 39 yards. But the drive that had started at the Dragon 20 came to an end at the Spartan 10 when Lawlor was picked by Nusbaum. A penalty moved Burnt Hills back to its five, but the speedy Nusbaum more than compensated for that loss when he bolted through a couple of arm tackles and raced 95 yards for another TD with 51 seconds left in the first half to make the halftime score 21-3. Cornwall didn’t throw in the towel, however. On the first drive of the second half the Green Dragons drove 79 yards in seven plays. Smallwood’s 47-yard run moved the ball to the Spartan two, and Lawlor scored from there on the next play. A bad snap ruined the PAT, so it was 21-9 at 10:56. The Cornwall defense then forced a three-and-out but its offense had to punt after gaining only one first down on its next series. Then the Burnt Hills offense found its rhythm again and chewed time off the clock by driving 92 yards on 11 plays. Beatty’s two-yard TD run made it 28-9 with 1:27 left in the third quarter. Burnt Hills put the game away early in the fourth quarter. The quick drive started near the end of the third quarter when Nusbaum broke off a 73-yard run to the Cornwall 7. Two plays later (on the first play of the fourth quarter) Jack Guba plowed in from the two. The PAT failed thanks to a bad snap but it was now 34-9 at the 11:54 mark. The next time they had the ball, the Spartans went 51 yards in two plays. First Neumann completed a 19-yard pass to Beatty. That was followed by Nusbaum’s third TD of the night which came on a 37-yard run around the left end as once again the Spartan blockers got the better of the Dragon defenders. Nusbaum’s fifth PAT of the night made it 41-9. Cornwall then drove 80 yards in eight plays against the Burnt Hills reserves. Lawlor ran for 26 yards and Smallwood followed with a 16-yard run to bring the ball to the BH 38. A pair of Lawlor-to-Joe White passes and a personal foul against the Spartans put the ball at the one. Lawlor scored his second TD of the night from there at 5:59. While Nusbaum was doing most of the work on the ground for Burnt Hills, Neumann completed six-of-eight passes for 87 yards. Flint caught three aerials for 43 yards. Smallwood was the leading rusher for the Green Dragons (19 carries for 123 yards). Lawlor was 15-for-62. The relentless Burnt Hill defense did a good overall job of containing the Dragon ground game in clutch situations. Still 34 Cornwall runs went for 185 yards. Lawlor also completed 14-of-31 passes for 162 yards but got “Burnt” by two interceptions and dropped passes. Colin Kelly (four-for-51) and Stephen Natale (four-for-49) were the leading receivers. But the big story of the night was the Burnt Hills offense with its quick and skillful running backs (led by Nusbaum) and outstanding blocking. Nusbaum (offense) and Dyland Wydronkowski (defense) were named the Burnt Hills MVPs while Lawler (offense) and Dylan Babcock (defense) were Cornwall’s MVPs. Burnt Hills is now 12-0 as it heads for another showdown with Sweet Home (also 12-0) at the Carrier Dome. Cornwall (8-3) wraps up another successful season and will bring back the 30 underclassmen that suited up against the Spartans. Of course Burnt Hills will bring back 33 next year, so coaches Marcus Hughes and Tom Pinder will have some tweaking to do during the offseason to get their squad up to that next level. --- PHIL DUSENBURY Friday, November 20 ELDRED FALLS SHORT TO MORIAH IN CLASS D STATE SEMIFINAL KINGSTON - Offensive MVP Ron Schofield rushed for 261 yards and two touchdowns with the Moriah defense sacking Eldred QB Bryan Henry four times in the Vikings' 22-13 state semifinal victory at Dietz Stadium Friday afternoon. Number 7 Moriah advances to its second consecutive state final. Last year, they wound up losing to Maple Grove. This year they'll play #2 Randolph, who defeated top-ranked Groton, 14-6, in the other semifinal played in Rochester. The 9-2 Section Seven champs used a 32-yard punt return by Eric Baker to set up a first-and-goal from the Eldred two just over four minutes into the game. On the next hike, junior fullback Nick Gilbo scored the game's first touchdown and his 7th of the year. Ryan Mascarenas converted the extra point for a 7-0 Moriah advantage. Late in the first quarter, a 44-yard Nascarenas punt got the Vikings out of trouble from inside their own five. Eldred got the ball at midfield but a key sack on third down forced the Yellow Jackets to punt. Mascarenas returned the kick but fumbled, allowing Jordan Tice to recover for Eldred at the Moriah 21. On the first play from scrimmage, Ian Halloran broke up the middle and ran all the way in for a score at 10:20 of the second quarter. Gilbo blocked the Bobby Warden PAT to preserve a 7-6 Moriah lead. The Vikings proceeded to march downfield from their own 32 to the Jacket 10, but on 2nd-and-goal, Henry intercepted a Nate Gilbo pass. In the final minutes of the first half, Eldred drove 64 yards to the Moriah 30 when Warden's 47-yard field goal fell just shy of the mark. This sent the teams into the locker rooms with a close 7-6 score. Moriah journeyed on an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended on a Schofield two-yard touchdown at 2:19 of the third. The running back accounted for 45 of the 65 yards on the scoring march. Halloran nearly recovered a fumble on the third play of the series but lost control of the football. The PAT went wide left but Moriah had opened up a 13-6 margin. More excitement then took place during a special teams situation when Eldred punted after its next possession and Matt Balcom recovered a muff at the Moriah 30. The Yellow Jackets decided to try a direct snap out of the wildcat formation but Mike Speshock picked off a Warden pass at his two and made a 26-yard return. Schofield needed just two totes of the football to achieve his desired results. First, he raced out to the 41. Then he got the ball a second time and went the remaining 59 yards to pay turf and his 19th touchdown of the season. A two-point pass try went awry but Moriah had expanded to a 19-6 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Eldred didn't quit. After a kickoff return to the 27, Henry trotted out to hit Balcom on a 72-yard pass-and-run play to get the football all the way down to the Viking one on the final play of the third. Halloran got his second TD of the game on the next carry and 21st of the year. Warden made the kick to cut the Eldred deficit to 19-13. QB Gilbo made his lone completion of the day, 30 yards to Ralph Schofield, on the next Vikings series. But the drive ended in a missed field goal attempt. Moriah's defense held and this time they would get the clincher on offense as they embarked on a 10-play, 69-yard excursion ending up with a 21-yard Mascarenas field goal. Moriah had a 22-13 lead which put the game out of Eldred's reach at 1:56 of the final period. Schofield had all but 22 of the Moriah rushing slate in this game with his 261 yards on 38 carries. Nate Gilbo earned Defensive MVP honors for the Vikings with his two sacks. Wally Edwards had 1.5 sacks for Moriah, with the team total of four sacks costing Eldred QB Henry 30 yards. Halloran proved the workhorse again for the 10-2 Yellow Jackets, going 16-for-117 to earn his team's Offensive MVP. The rest of Eldred's ground attack netted 94 yards. Henry completed 6-of-13 passes for 91 yards. Balcom caught three of those aerials for 80 stripes. Dylan Kulik took home the Eldred Defensive MVP award. This marks the final game in the long and storied coaching career of Eldred's Frank Kean, who has overseen the typical ups-and-downs of a small football program for well over 30 years. Perhaps Eldred saved its best for last in regard to the long-time mentor. The Yellow Jackets have won three Section Nine titles in the past five seasons and came up especially big here in 2009 with the regional championship won against Tuckahoe last week. --- Rich Arnott and Phil Dusenbury Wednesday, November 18 ELDRED'S COACH KEAN HONORED BY THE JETS
The New York Jets announced Wednesday that Frank Kean of Eldred High School has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Kean will receive $1,000 to benefit the school’s football program and will be presented with a certificate from the Jets. This award, in its 14th year, is given to a coach in the tri-state area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes. Kean is in his 36th and final season as the head coach of the Yellowjackets. He has coached Eldred to many divisional and sectional titles, most recently the Division 5, Section 9 regional championship this season. Kean has also won Section 9 titles in baseball and basketball during his time at Eldred. He has taught mathematics for 38 years at Eldred and coincidentally has 38 former students who are now math teachers. -- NY JETS RELEASE Thursday, November 19 CORNWALL READIES FOR STATE-RANKED #2 BURNT HILLS IN CLASS A SEMI-FINAL Wednesday, November 18 UNCHARTED WATERS: ELDRED FACES TOUGH MORIAH IN STATE SEMI-FINAL Tuesday, November 17 A FEW SIGSTATS AND QUOTES FROM THE REGIONAL CONTESTS Tuesday, November 17 THE DIETZ STATMAN LOVES THE SEMI'S Saturday, November 21 THE HUDSON VALLEY REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SCORES Sunday, November 15 NEW ROCHELLE GETS ITS REVENGE AND FINALLY DEFEATS MONROE-WOODBURY Saturday, November 14 SMALLWOOD'S THREE TD AND ROOSEVELT MISTAKES GIVE CORNWALL A REGIONAL TITLE Friday, November 13 ELDRED WINS FIRST CLASS D REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Friday, November 13 BRONXVILLE RUNS OVER ELLENVILLE IN CLASS C REGIONAL Friday, November 13 NANUET SHUTS DOWN O'NEILL IN CLASS B REGIONAL TITLE GAME Thursday, November 12 RICK STONE LOOKS AT THIS WEEKEND'S REGIONAL MATCHUPS Wednesday, November 11 ATHLETES FOOTNOTES: LET'S MEET "DA MAN" and CRUNCH SOME NUMBERS Monday, November 9 FOOTBALL FOOTNOTES: REGIONALS SCHEDULE, SIGSTATS & QUOTES Sunday, November 8 RECORDS FALL WHILE SCALO LEADS HIS CRU TO ANOTHER CLASS AA TITLE Sunday, November 8 BOX SCORE: MONROE-WOODBURY 35, WARWICK 27 Sunday, November 8 PFEIL AND MCKEARN LEAD O'NEILL IN CLASS B UPSET WIN OVER HIGHLAND Saturday, November 7 ELLENVILLE DEFENDS ITS C TITLE WITH 27-0 WIN OVER LIBERTY Saturday, November 7 GREEN DRAGONS WIN THEIR FIFTH STRAIGHT TITLE Saturday, November 7 ELDRED HAS ITS WAY ...
