NYSPHSAA CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY COURTESY OF SNF STATISTICIAN RICH MICHAELIS

Championships Won Per Section (AA, A, B, C, D - 1993-2016)

Section One has the most titles with 25 (3AA, 4A, 6B, 8C, 4D). Sections Five and Six each have 23 (6, 6, 4, 3, 4 and 6, 5, 3, 2, 7, respectively). Section Four is next with 18 total (0, 4, 5, 7, 2). Section Two won three in 2016 to bring its number up to 13 (2, 4, 3, 2, 2). Section Three follows with 12 (3, 1, 1, 2, 5). Our very own Section Nine has 2 state titles, Rondout Valley in 2000 Class B and Monroe-Woodbury in 2005 Class AA (1, 0, 1, 0, 0). Section Seven has 1 championship (0, 0, 1, 0, 0). Finally, Section Ten has not yet won a NYSPHSAA football title, as Ogdensburg just lost a close 39-34 final to Section Four's Newark Valley (0, 0, 0, 0, 0).

Eastern NY VS. Western NY Comparison

Teams from Western, NY (Sections 3, 4, 5, 6) have won 76 state titles since the beginning of the full tournament in 1993, while Eastern, NY teams (Sections 1, 2, 7, 9, 10) have won 41 times. In a given year, Western teams have the edge 17 times while the Eastern group has had it (including 2016 where the East won 4/5 games) six times. The very first year (1993) saw each part of the state win two games apiece, as Class AA did not exist until 1996. Western teams have swept all five games twice, while the East has taken 4/5 games twice (1996, 2016).
