Welcome to the Schuyler County Little League Website
For those of you who do not know about it. Little League suffered a great loss this past week in Virginia. A little League player, Chelal Beninu Gross-Matos, was struck by lightning and killed. A second player that was playing Catch with Chelal was also hit, and is currently in critical condition and is fighting for his life. PLEASE, keep these folks in your thoughts. This is a tragedy of the worse kind because it involves a child.

| Two Boys Hit By Lightning; One Dies Lightning Strikes Boys During Little League Game Updated: Wednesday, 03 Jun 2009, 11:01 PM EDT Published : Wednesday, 03 Jun 2009, 8:38 PM EDT By MYFOXDC STAFF/myfoxdc FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Officials in Spotsylvania County say two 12-year-old boys were struck by lightning at a little league baseball field on Wednesday, and one of those boys has died. It happened at a field on 9910 Lee Park Hill Road in Fredericksburg, Virginia just before 6:30 p.m. Spotsylvania County Sherriff's Department spokeswoman Kathy Smith says the two boys were playing in a Parks and Recreation sanctioned game that had been called by the umpire due to weather. But, Smith says, the boys were still playing catch when they were struck. Officials say parents at the field started CPR before deputies arrived. County officials say the two boys were taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where one of the boys—12-year-old Chelal Matos-- died. The other boy is listed in critical condition. FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - A Little League game turned deadly for a Spotsylvania boy Wednesday when lightning struck at a local park. Robert Matos was so proud of his 12-year-old son at the game Wednesday afternoon. "He was the only one who scored. He got up, he got on base, he stole second, he stole third, and he went home." It was the last run 12-year-old Chelal Gross-Matos would score. Frank Albright says his son's team was playing a game at Lee Hill Park. Umpires halted the game and cleared the field when lightning was sighted in the area. "As soon as there was lightning everyone came off the field," said Albright. Liz Scott says 12-year-old Chelal Gross-Matos and an 11-year-old teammate remained and were playing catch under parents' supervision when lightning struck the field. "They just wanted to play. They were about to come off the field. My wife was yelling at them. My dad was about to go get them and then it happened," Matos explained. "It was just an enormous lightning strike. I could see grass in the air," said Albright. Scott says lightning hit Matos and the charge transferred to the other boy. Albright says nurses who were on the scene rushed to the two injured boys and immediately began performing CPR. "As far as I know neither one of them [was] responsive," said Albright Wednesday night. "They were doing CPR on my coach's son in my truck for the longest time before the ambulances got here." Matos says his son loved baseball and played for his father, Robert, on the Spotsylvania County Little League baseball team, the Yankees. "It was the last thing -- the absolute last thing any of us expected," Matos said. "A beautiful life, a good kid, got taken." Authorities say grief counselors will be at Chancellor Middle School in Fredericksburg Thursday morning. Scott says the 11-year-old, who wasn't identified, was in critical condition at a Richmond hospital. "I know Chelal is pulling for him, I know Chelal is telling him to get up. I know he is, because that's Chelal," Chelal's father said. | ||||||||

The Schuyler County Sunshine Fund, and Schuyler County Little League would like to take the time to recognize a young man who was taken from his family way to soon. On behalf of Schuyler County Little League, I would like to to extend our sympathies to the family of Robert McElligott. Please keep them in your thoughts.
Robert David McElligott passed away in his sleep on December 27, 2008 as a result of a seizure. Robert was 14 years old and an 8th grade honor student at the Richard T. Stank Middle School in the Susquehanna Valley School District. Ever since he was a little boy, Robert loved the game of baseball and was a loyal fan of the Yankees. Even though Robert lived in the Binghamton area with his parents, he had strong ties to Schuyler County where he would often visit his grandparents, David and Marsha McElligott, and other family members in Watkins Glen. Along with being a member of his local baseball team, Robert loved to do many other activities, such as fishing, paintball, skateboarding and playing poker with his dad, grandpa and uncles. Robert was a compassionate, helpful young man, who befriended everyone he met and was always willing to help anyone.
