Khan does it at Clayton again
Saturday 27-6-09 Clayton West (194 all out) lost to Scholes ((290 for 5) by 96 runs
The Drakes Huddersfield League Premiership reached the halfway point at the weekend with a double header that saw Scholes lose only their second game of the season at Barkisland on Sunday, a disappointment tempered by their still maintaining a seven point lead over nearest rivals Elland. With Delph’s sudden collapse, and the dangerous Honley losing their fifth game of the season, Skelmanthorpe have slipped quietly into third place, and together with the Hullen Edger’s they may pose the biggest threat to James Noble’s men achieving what seemed so highly improbable only a couple of months ago – winning the Byrom Shield for the third time in the club’s history.
Saturday’s visit to Clayton West was the second of the season, following a Heavy Woollen win in May. Iqbal Khan certainly enjoys batting at Back Lane, and he unhurriedly compiled his second century on another fine wicket, as he helped Noble (74) add 162 for the second wicket. Mott (23) and the strapping Shahnawaz (20*) added the required brouhaha late on as Scholes posted 290 for 5. Sharp was the best of the home attack with 3 for 58, and Clayton toiled away manfully in the sad absence of Aussie bowler Chris Thompson, to whom all at Scholes CC send their very best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.
Once the impressive Mott had dismissed the dangerous Stuart Rank and promising Butterfield with only 9 runs on the board, Clayton were always on the backfoot, despite the efforts of Rashid, whose 88 featured six maximums, and who was given plucky support by Firth (23) and all rounder Sharp, who stroked seven 4’s in his 36. The last five wickets fell for 24 as Mott returned to mop up a fragile tail and gain a season’s best analysis of 5 for 20 from his 12.2 overs, and in the absence of Alsop, Shahnawaz stood up to the plate in sending down 17 overs for his 3 for 58 as Clayton were bowled out in the 47th over for 194.
Scholes II’s entertained Marsden at Chapelgate, and had to recover from a gruesome 1 for 2 batting first. New signing from neighbours Holmfirth Birkhead led the way with a belligerent 72, and found gritty support from Richard Wimpenny (31) and Matthew Boorman (39). Their diligence laid the foundations for a brutal late assault from Floyd, who hit three 6’s in his excellent 60, and the in form Marsh (53*), who equalled Steve Booth’s long held club record of reaching his half century in 17 balls, as the Scholes skipper blasted seven maximums to hoist his men up to an intimidating 292 for 7. The visitors were never in the hunt and fell away to 180 all out as Zaffino top scored with 27, and the remarkable Marsh secured his MOM award in taking 5 for 31 in his eight over spell.
