Hurlbaat nearly pulls it off
Scholes (161 for 9) beat Broad Oak (151 all out) by 10 runsThe Spring Bank Holiday triple header presented Scholes First XI with a variety of challenges, as a daunting return to Delph to complete their delayed Sykes Cup second round match was sandwiched in between home games against Broad Oak and Elland in the Premiership. The fact that Scholes were forced to bat with only 10 men at Delph due to an aberration in the rules over Joe Lumb availability made their brilliant win against all odds against the high flying Saddleworth outfit all the more meritorious – but more of that famous win in a moment.
Broad Oak didn’t hesitate in bowling first on Saturday after another week of heavy showers, and their formidable large Aussie DeAraugo soon had a hesitant Scholes in some disarray at 33 for 3 with Love, Khan and Noble already departed. At the other Hurlbaat was his usual snarling presence, hurling his appeals at an unmoved umpire at every opportunity, the Zimbabwean the very definition of a combatitive cricketer. Latif clawed his way up to 31 until a beauty from DeAraugo pinned back his off stump, and the joint league leaders found themselves rooted to a fairly parlous 96 for 6. However Scholes’ own Antipodean Shane Mott is no slouch with the bat, and made another crucial contribution to his new team mates cause with a breezy 40, featuring three boundaries and two 6’s. Alsop made a lusty 16, and Shahnawaz hit two maximums in the last two overs to get Scholes up to a semi respectable 161 for 9. Dearaugo’s 4 for 39 off 21 overs before being removed from the attack by Umpire Tindall for running on the wicket was an admirable effort, and Hurlbaat collected 3 for 51 from his 15.
The Oak found batting no easier as they replied, soon slumping to 33 for 4. Alsop had settled in for a marathon spell, and hard as they tried both Rushworth and DeAraugo perished for 16 after getting a start. Shahnawaz was on and found a superb rhythm, and at 83 for 7 the visitors looked beaten. As ever, Hurlbaat had other ideas, and as Alsop tired a little the Oak skipper launched a counter attack. It was squeaky bum time for Scholes supporters in the very healthy crowd as two mighty sixes were launched into the stratosphere, the second of which went into Wadman Road, the biggest hit I have seen at the old ground, but Hurlbaat ran out of partners with the score on 151 as Scholes won by ten runs. Shahnawaz’s exemplary 9 over spell cost 13 runs and secured two important victims, and the superb Alsop’s 6 for 75 after bowling through was the perfect preparation for his engagement party in the clubhouse that began as soon as the match was completed.
