2010-2011 Wrestling Clinics Announced - Registration starts Nov 9th

The Sawyer Youth Wrestling Club will be sponsoring a series of clinics on Tuesday and Thursday nights, starting November 30th  and ending February 24th  in the wrestling room at the rear of the Kiwanis Ice Rink.  The purpose of these clinics is to introduce the sport of wrestling to 4th through 6th grade boys and girls.  The clinics will cover the rules and techniques used in the Saugerties Junior and Senior High School wrestling programs.  This style of wrestling is not the same as the WWE wrestling as seen on TV.  The young wrestlers participating in these clinics will also have the opportunity to compete against wrestlers of the same age and weight class in tournaments held throughout New York State if they so desire.

TIMES:     6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Tuesday and Thursday, 11/30/2010 through 2/24/2011

The cost of the program is $50.00.  Checks should be made payable to the Saugerties Wrestling Club.  The wrestling clinic is limited to the first 30 students that register. Late registrations will not be accepted. Parents/Legal guardians must register their child in person in order to complete and sign the required paperwork.

REGISTRATION:      11/9/2010 & 11/11/2010 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm,      Kiwanis Ice Arena (Please bring a copy of your child's Health Ins. Card)

All participants will receive an AAU Athlete Membership prior to the 1st clinic. More information on this program can be found at www.aauwrestling.net. Everyone MUST have an AAU membership card PRIOR to the first clinic in order to be eligible to participate.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

 FAQs

2010 - 2011

(Frequently Asked Questions)

 Q. Is there a uniform required?

A. There is no uniform required for these clinics.  T-shirt and shorts or sweats is fine.  There are shoes made specifically for wrestling, but you might want to wait until you see if your child likes the sport before you make that purchase. Wrestling shoes can range in price from $35-$100+ new, or cheaper on Ebay.  Wrestlers may participate in socks if they do not have wrestling shoes.  Street shoes are not allowed on the mats.  We've had kids go the whole season in just socks, without a problem.    For tournaments or matches (if they choose later down the road), there are one piece uniforms called 'singlets', and ear protection called 'headgear'.  The singlet will not be necessary unless they decide to compete, and the headgear is optional for the clinics, but required at tournaments.

Q. What does the fee cover?

A. The fee  covers the cost of an AAU Added Benefits Wrestling Membership (www.aauwrestling.net), AAU Club fees, AAU 3rd party insurance underwriting,  a T-Shirt, cleaning / 1st aid supplies, mat tape, supplies, etc.

Q. Can my daughter wrestle or is this club only for boys?

A. The Sawyer Youth Wrestling Club provides equal opportunity to all youth wrestlers interested in the sport, both male and female.

Q. Will my son/daughter wrestle older/bigger kids?

A. Wrestling matches are broken down into weight brackets.  At the upper school levels, it is possible for a senior to wrestle a 7th grader!  However, for our clinics, we will be matching the kids based upon ability, age and weight.   The largest difference in age should only be 2 school years.  Ability will supersede age, and weight will be the final criteria.  We will never match an inexperienced wrestler with an experienced one, except for learning/teaching drills.

Q. My son/daughter loves to watch wrestling on TV.  Will he/she be learning moves like that?

A. Scholastic wrestling, or Folkstyle Wrestling is the style that we teach.  It IS NOT the same as the WWE wrestling as seen on TV for entertainment.  NCAA College wrestling is also Folkstyle.  The Olympics and World competitions utilize Freestyle and Greco Roman styles.  Each has its own specific rules.

Q. Will my son/daughter be able to compete after these clinics?

A. The clinics are primarily for learning techniques. We try to keep it fun while learning.  When we started this program 3 years ago, we intended on teaching the basic fundamentals to introduce the sport and give the advantage of a head start when entering the junior high school level.  We were amazed at how quickly the kids absorbed the knowledge and by the end of the clinic, they were wrestling matches!   This part is 100% voluntary.  If the wrestler does not feel ready, we would never push them into that.  Some wrestlers even went on to compete at various tournaments.  We have had several 1st, 2nd and 3rd place wrestlers at these tournaments.  We will locate tournaments at the end of the clinic and discuss the option if you are interested.

Q. My son/daughter changed their mind. Can I get a refund of my fee?

A. A portion of the fee covers the cost of an AAU Added Benefits Wrestling Membership (www.aauwrestling.net), which is non-refundable ($16.00.) During the first initial week of clinics we would be able to issue you a refund less the $16.00 AAU membership fee. Refunds could take up to 30 days to process. Refunds will not be issued after the first week of clinic, 12/05/2010.

There are some great YouTube videos posted on youth wrestling as well if you are interested.  Don't be intimidated if you come across a video of a full match.  These groups will not be at that level for a while.

Thursday, March 11
Open Mats
"Open Mats" are going on at the Kiwanis Ice Arena.  They are being held by the Modified Coaches, Coach Skalla on Tues 6-7:30, Coach Sasso Wednesday 3:30 - 5, and Coach Skalla again on Thurs 5-6.  These practices are open to all wrestlers of all abilities.  They simply roll out the mats and the kids work on whatever they want to under the guidance of the coaches.  The older kids love to help the younger kids, and the younger kids gain tremendous experience from it.  I recommend attending to keep sharp if anyone plans to attend upcoming tournaments.  These practices will continue through the end of the March 2010.

Thursday, February 25
