Funny how when you are looking for something, you find something you did not know you were looking for.... As always, I was roaming for softball info. I even had Stacy pounding the keys... Stacy found many articles using specific search words I had told her. This article was not what I was initially looking for... Articles like this tend to balance me, and tend to refocus the importance of failure. Failure is vital in any aspect of life.... Without Failure one does not learn.... Players need to push hard at practice to find the edge of failure.. At this point, the player decides to fail or not fail, consequently, to learn or not learn..... At this point the coach has an opportunity to assist in the learning process... Games are not the time to teach and learn... If they have not learned how to keep their head down at practice, they will not learn in 2 minutes while in the batter’s box. One of Stacy's Instructors has a Doctorate in Sports Psychology. I remember her noting instead of saying, "You are pulling your head" say "What I want you to do is keep your head down"..Word choice and tone make a big difference in message sent. Games are stressful enough as a parent/coach; imagine what the player is feeling.. So, coaches are not needed at the games? Yes, coaches are needed. I like to think of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde... One type of coach is needed at practice...Pushing, teaching, pushing, teaching to find the fulcrum of growth.. Another type of Coach is needed at the game.... Cheerleading, Massaging, and Guiding to insure anxiety does not override execution.... This article hit home because I am always evaluating what I have been doing and what I want to do (in everything lol). Why is it in practice, the players are more relaxed and tend to try without worry of failure vs. during game the opposite occurs..? Simple, once you break it down.. During practice we (coaches/Parents) are happy, easy going, and relaxed vs. during games when we are anxious, tense, and sometimes unhappy... I lost an opportunity to Coach my daughter this weekend... Her hitting was off and I was over coaching her... there is a time and place for everything.. My constructive criticism was definitely not the time or the place.... Sometimes we have to give them hug. Sometime focusing on something irrelevant in order to get them refocused helps... Without inner peace, anxiety nurtures frustration which over time will overrule the ability to focus on objectives.. Rationality can not be present when one is angry (very frustrated).
Just my 2 cents.. Hope you get something from the article. Please not 5-1 Magic Ratio. Guys-don’t you hate it when our wives say this is something you might want to read?? Hint. Hint. Nudge. Nudge. thanks girlfriend, I will try harder this weekend
