Saline rallies late to defeat rival Adrian in Double-OT
The rivalry between the Saline Hornets and Adrian Maples high school football teams added another chapter tonight. The visiting Saline Hornets (2-0) defeated the Adrian Maples (1-1) 25-22 in double overtime off the foot of senior kicker Mike Sclater. "I told Sclater that he was going to get another opportunity at half-time after he missed the one in the first," said Saline head coach Mike Glennie. "I probably should have given him the chance on the drive before, but he came through when we asked him to at the end." Senior quarterback Joe Boisture completed a 17 yard pass to wide-out James Gentile that put them near the 50. After a defensive pass interference penalty the ball put the ball into Adrian territory, the Hornets faced a third and six from the Maples nine yard line. Boisture completed a nine yard touchdown pass to Gentile to put them in position to tie the game with 4:13 remaining in regulation. "It was a roll out play," Boisture said. "I rolled out to the right and the end came up and coach tells me to go underneath and that's what I did. It looked like the corner bit up cause he thought I was going to run and that left Gentile open for the touchdown." The Hornets began the game controlling the clock and were able to put drives together, but were only able to manage seven points at the half. "We controlled the clock, but we just weren't able to convert," said Saline head coach Mike Glennie. "We had a great opportunity inside the five yard line that we just couldn't convert." That opportunity came as a result of one of the three errant snaps by Adrian. "We lost the special teams battle tonight," said Adrian head coach Phil Jacobs. "We had a couple of good returns that put us in decent field position, but the bad snaps definitely came back on us." Second half adjustments allowed the Maples to put drives together and early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Drew Collins scored on a draw play up the middle from 19 yards out to give the Maples their first lead of the game, 15-14. The Maples forced the Hornets into a three and out on their next possession and took over on the Saline 36 yard line. After a nine yard run by Collins on the same play that they scored on previously, senior tailback Javon Jenkins scored on a 27 yard draw play to give the Maples a 22-14 lead. Soon thereafter Saline drove down to tie the game late. After the Sclater field goal in the second overtime the Maples attempted a 23 yard field goal to send it into a third overtime, but the snap sailed over the head of the Adrian kicker. The last ditch Hail Mary that ensued ricocheted off of a Saline player and three Adrian players before falling incomplete on the goal line. The Hornets will look to carry this momentum on the road to Pioneer (2-0) next Friday, while the Maples will look to rebound on the road against Dexter (1-1).
