Seton Catholic savors first Section 4 boys lacrosse title Washington's 27 saves thwart CVJune 3, 2009 TOWN OF FENTON - With a performance he called "the best game of his life," Seton Catholic Central goalie Mike Washington helped deliver the first Section 4 boys lacrosse title for the Saints. Washington made 27 saves and Jesse Wood led the way offensively with five goals and four assists as Seton CC built a seven-goal first-half lead before holding on late for an 11-9 victory over Chenango Valley in the Section 4 Class C title game Tuesday. Six other players each scored a goal for Seton CC (16-3), which will meet the Section 10 champion in a state Class C first-round game 1 Saturday at SUNY-Potsdam."It's the best feeling," said Seton CC coach Travis Eckler, a member of Union-Endicott's Section 4 Class A title team in 1999. "I won one as a player 10 years ago, but now I can't go out there and shoot. "I can just teach these guys how to play, and to see what they've accomplished, it's great." Seton CC led 9-2 after two quarters and held an 11-5 lead following Wood's fifth goal with 5:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. CV (17-3) responded with a furious rally, scoring the next four goals - three by Kyle Bakker - to draw within 11-9 with 1:03 remaining. The Warriors had a chance to get within a goal in the final minute, but Washington made a nice save on a Devin Ferry shot, and the Saints took possession and ran out the clock."I was feeling nervous when we got up (seven)," Washington said. "It was like 'now, we have to win it.' "It got a little close at the end, but we were able to hold on." The Saints earned their state playoff appearance with a superlative first-half performance that was stunning when considering the two teams split contests by identical 12-11 scores during the regular season. With Washington making several impressive saves early and Wood tallying a pair of goals, Seton CC led 4-1 after the first quarter. Wood added two more goals in a five-goal second quarter capped by Leo Moran's goal with 12.5 seconds remaining that put Seton CC up 9-2. CV scored the first three goals of the third quarter, the third by Mike Korinek with 8:24 left, to get within 9-5, but Washington and the rest of the Seton CC defense buckled down until CV's late-game push. CV coach Pete Weston felt Washington's play as a major difference in the outcome. "Mike had a heck of a day; he turned back a lot of good shots early and that got in our heads," Weston said. "We dug ourselves into a bit of hole, and when you get down that far and that fast, there's not much you can do."Wood's play also was a major factor. He's one of Section 4's top offensive players, and the inability of CV's defense to slow him down, particularly in the first half, was another reason CV's season ended in the Class C final for the second straight year. "Every practice, every game, you never have to motivate Jesse," Eckler said. "He always comes to play, and he did that (Wednesday)." Saturday, April 25 Thrilling OT Win Keeps Saints Boys Lax JVs Unbeaten
The Seton Boy’s JV Lacrosse team (7 – 0) remained unbeaten after a thrilling 10 – 9 overtime win against Maine-Endwell at Seton CCHS’ Field of Dreams. Mark Ziolkowski’s dodge from top-center and shot scored the winner about 1 minute into OT. Seton moved into OT on an outstanding save by Brian Walter with just under 25 seconds left in regulation a scrum ensued just above the ME restraining box. The ball kicked towards the Seton goal and a lone ME player picked it up from about 10 yards out. Walter sprung towards the ME player as he shot. His quick reaction save from about 4 feet away from the ME player saved Seton from the loss. Next up for Seton is a home rematch against Chenango Valley next Monday at 4:30pm at the Field of Dreams. Seton was a 9 – 5 winner earlier. Scoring: Goals – Assists – Ground Balls Kelleher (4,0,3) Burtis (1,1,3) Daly (2,0,5) Ziolkowski (2,0,12) DePersiis (1,3,0) Elsey (0,1,6) Kane (0,0,6) Washington (0,0,4) Hart (0,0,2) I would be remised by not mentioning the Seton D-Poles outstanding effort this season. While Seton’s offense has been averaging 12 goals a game the Seton defense led by their poles have given up an average of 2.3 goals per game. David Hart, Dan McKiernan, Matt Washington, Vinnie Gaynor- LSM, MDD, Jake Daly - LSM Game 1 – Seton 5, UE 3 Game 2 – Seton 9, CV 5 Game 3 – Seton 9, JC 2 Game 4 – Seton 11, Owego 2 Game 5 – Seton 19, Oneonta 0 Game 6 – Seton 14, WP 2 Game 7 – Seton 10, ME 9 in OT
Coach DePersiis Wednesday, April 15 Saints Boys Varsity moves to 4-1 with a convincing victory over Owego From the Press&Sun: SCC 12, Owego 2: Seton Catholic Central rattled off seven consecutive goals after the teams were tied 1-1 to close the first quarter. Jesse Wood had three goals and four assists, and Joe Slavik three goals for the Saints. "Mike Washington was great in the first half, made some great saves in the early going," SCC coach Travis Eckler said of his goaltender. Owego 1 0 0 1 -- 2 Seton 1 3 4 4 -- 12 Seton CC g-a: Joe Slavik 3-0; Jesse Wood 3-4; Mike O'Brien 2-3; Ivan Jones 2-1; Liam Kelleher 1-0; Lucas Hines 1-0. Shots: 27-27. Ground balls: Owego, 24-19. Faceoffs: SCC, 10-6. Man-up: Owego 0-for-3; SCC 4-for-7. Goalie saves: Baileys (O) 11; Mike Washington (SCC) 16, Matt Dittemore (SCC) 1 Sunday, April 12 Saints JV Boys begin the 2009 season strong ! The Seton JV Lax Boy’s team beat Owego 11 – 2 on the ‘Field of Dreams’ field Thursday April 9 to improve their record to 4 – 0. A sluggish Seton team allowed Owego to jump out to a 2 – 0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Saints woke up in the 2nd quarter with two goals and the defense held firm to tie the game at the end of the 1st half 2 – 2. Goalie Mike Navarro came up with 5 big saves in the 2nd quarter to keep Owego at bay. Seton jumped all over Owego in the first 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter with 3 quick goals and finished the quarter with a 8 – 2 lead. The Saints stingy defense (Matt Washington, Dan McKiernan, David Hart, and Pat Clancy) continued their outstanding season play lowering Saint’s opponent’s average goals per game to a miniscule 3 per game. Goalies Mike Navarro (7 saves, 2 goals) and Brian Walter (4 saves, 0 goals) continued their strong tandem play in goal. Offensively Seton’s midfielder’s speed and athleticism continue to give opponents trouble matching up. The Saint’s ‘spread the wealth’ offense approach is reflected in the game box score. Faceoff man Jack Kane won 7 of 9 face-offs (including 6 for 6 in the 2nd half) allowing the Saints to take control the game.
Game Box Score: Connor Shanahan – 1g Cade Kelleher – 3g Jack Burtis – 2g Jake Daly – 1g Bob DePersiis – 1g, 4a Jack Kane – 1g Vinny Gaynor – 1g Scott Elsey – 1g, 1a Thursday, March 26 Saint's begin 2009 strong with a win over UE 11-2 Saint's looked outstanding in the opening game against UE. We saw significant inprovements in ball control during EMO, ground balls, and faceoff's. Defense looked outstanding and Mike Washington provided some huge saves once again. From today's paper: Two from SCC each outscore U-E in opener. The Seton Catholic Central duo of Jesse Wood and Joey Slavic proved too much for host Union-Endicott to handle in the visiting Saints' 11-2 win Wednesday in a non-league meeting of Section 4 Lacrosse Conference squads. Wood had four goals and Slavic added three to go with two assists for Seton CC, which held a 7-2 advantage at halftime of its season opener. "They run their whole offense through (attackman) Wood and (midfielder) Slavic," Tigers coach Jon Stank said. "They're extremely good players, we had a tough time matching up with them man-to-man." Stank added of the Saints, "They're going to give some teams some fits." Jesse Wood (4 goals) Joey Slavic (3 goals/2 assists) Ivan Jones (2 goal/1 assist) Leo Moran (1 goal) Lucas Hines (1 goal) Mike Washington (10saves) Matt Dittemore (2 saves) Saturday, January 31 UPDATE: 2009 Boys V / JV Schedules The JV Schedule has changed. Saint's U-17 Players Win Frostbite Tourney
Congratulations to the Saints Lacrosse U17 Team. This past weekend, the team ventured down to Franklin & Marshall's Frostbite tournament. They played teams from around the Mid Atlantic area and represented themselves very well. After the first four games we were seeded 2nd going into the "semi-finals". Other very talented teams (including Malvern Prep - nationally ranked in 2008) were ousted from the flayoffs due to earlier losses.
Fifth game (semifinals), we won against Abbington and overcame our earlier loss. (That was a great win....)
A special note of thanks to the parents for letting their kids play in this tournament. We really have a great group of young men! Also a note of thanks to Mike O'Brien for all the pictures that he took! Thank you Mike! The pictures can be found on the website listed below.

Our 4 seniors represented (Nick Wan, Mike Axtell, Mike Ziolkowski, and Aiden graven) us well in this final game. Monday, May 19 Seton JV Boys Lacrosse Team Wins Another! The Seton JV Boy’s Lacrosse Team bounced back from a very competitive and hard fought physical game loss to Chenango Valley (9 to 0) with a resounding home win against the Dryden Lions 13 to 5 this past Saturday at the “Field of Dreams” giving them 4 wins in their last 7 games with 3 games remaining. Seton (4 – 10) jumped out early and often with 8 goals in the first period to take an 8 to 1 lead. Jack Burtis (3g – 0a) opened the scoring 1:15 into the game on a nice feed from Connor Shanahan (7 points, 2g – 5a). Dan Farrell (3g – 1a) followed up 46 seconds later with the first of his back-to-back goals off a pretty finesse pass from Tom Torto (1g – 4a). Farrell’s 2nd goal came unassisted off a drive to the Dryden crease forcing Dryden to take an early timeout. Following the timeout, Burtis scored his second goal on a “hidden ball” play with Jack Kane that completely surprised the Dryden team as well as several of Seton’s own teammates. Shortly thereafter Jack Kane scored the first of his 4 goals (first career 4 goal game) on a breakaway howitzer from the right side. The defense led by John Ziolkowski, Gabe Slavik, Andrew Salamida, Dan McKiernan, Abel Tadesse and Jake Daly allowed only 10 Dryden shots and help produce a Seton ground ball advantage of 13 to 8 and forced Dryden into numerous turnovers in their clearing game. Mike Navarro stopped 6 shots one on a point blank crease shot low by Dryden. Mike made several clearing passes to Seton’s Middies that provided several goals and shots in transition. Seton JV Boy’s are next up home against Elmira ND this Tuesday at 4:30pm at the “Field of Dreams”. In their first meeting at Elmira, Elmira ND won 6 to 5 on a goal with 1:21 left to play in the game. Statistics: Jack Burtis (3g - 1a), Dan Farrell (3g – 1a), Jack Kane (4g – 0a), Connor Shanahan (2g – 5a), Tom Torto (1g – 4a) GBs: Seton 13, Dryden 8 Shots: Seton 16, Dryden 10 Penalties: Seton 14, Dryden 7 Face-offs: Seton 9, Dryden 4
Mike Axtell finishes E-ND SETON CC 11, ELMIRA ND 10Mike Axtell scored with 21 seconds remaining with his patented left handed low slapshot to give the Saints a huge victory over visiting Elmira Notre Dame. The victory propelled SCC to a tie for first place in the Division. Strong defense and Goalie play, intensity on ground balls, and exceptional ball movement led to a dominating performance. Goals-Assists: Mike O'Brien 1-0, Jesse Wood 2-2, Leo Moran 1-0, Mike Axtell 2-1, Joe Slavik 4-2, Ivan Jones 1-0, David Hettinger 0-1. Sunday, May 11 Seton JV Boys LAX Team Continues Turnaround! Seton JV Boy’s (3 – 9 overall, 3 – 2 the last 5 games) beat Johnson City this past Friday by the score of 7 to 3. Again a stingy Seton defense led the way giving up just one JC goal over the final 3 periods. Mike Navarro made 5 of 6 saves for the game and the defense held JC to just 14 shots for the game (6 in the 1st period). Seton’s D-Poles lead the way by creating numerous opportunities for ground balls as Seton picked up 47 ground balls to JC’s 29. Seton’s defensive package thwarted JC into going 0 for 5 on man up advantages. Another outstanding and improving phase of Seton’s defensive game was clears. Seton was successful on all 12 of their attempts. Seton’s Dan Farrell open the scoring 2:02 into the game and Jack Burtis (4 goals) followed up 2:24 later on a great feed from Connor Shanahan to make it 2 – 0. After a scoreless 2nd period, Bob DePersiis scored Seton’s 3rd goal on a nice left handed shot to make it 3 – 2. Mike Navarro made a great point-blank save shortly thereafter however JC did score its only goal of the 2nd half just before the end of the period. Jack Burtis put Seton ahead for good on a power move beginning from behind the goal and bulling his way to the front of the crease and scoring on a tricky bounce shot. Bob DePersiis followed up with an insurance goal 1:19 later. Scoring: Dan Farrell 1 – 0, Jack Burtis 4 – 0, Connor Shanahan 0 – 1, Bob DePersiis 2 – 1, Tom Torto 0 – 1 Saves: Mike Navarro 5 GBs: Seton 47, JC 29 Shots: Seton 32, JC 14 Faceoffs: Seton 9 for 13 (Devon Kane 6, Dan Farrell 3) Saturday, May 3 Leo Moran has a break-out performance over Dryden SETON CC 17, DRYDEN 5 Leo Moran had a huge day scoring 5 as the Saints rolled easily over Dryden. Jesse Wood led all Saints with 7 goals and 3 assists (and that was in the first half of the game).
