If you are brand new to hockey, you probably have a lot of questions. The first question you need to answer is:
What entry level program is most appropriate for my child???
Below is a short description of both of our entry level programs. If you click on the links below, you can find out more about the programs (registration dates, equipment, practice schedule, etc.)
Learn To Skate for Hockey (LTSH) - click here for more information-This is our entry level skating program, designed to develop a solid foundation of skating ability and basic stickhandling skills in a fun and exciting atmosphere, before proceeding to our Learn to Play Program.. This class is appropriate for:
- Kids age 4 to 6 with no prior skating experience.
- Full hockey equipment is required, however limited quantities of free loaner equipment are available, courtesy of Kemp's Hockey Supply Co. and Schenectady Youth Hockey Association!
Learn To Play Hockey (LTP)- click here for more information - this is our entry level hockey program. The kids generally skate 2 days per week, for one hour each lesson. One lesson will have a "hockey focus" and one has a "skating focus". This class is most appropriate for:
- Kids from 5 to 9 years old interested in hockey. (Younger, if you are from Canada or Minnesota!)
- You should have basic skating skills before you enter the program. You don't need to be a good skater, you just need to be able to stand up, and move around without a bucket. Our LTSH program is a good place to start.
- If you are ages 7 thru 9, you may be able to start without any skating experience, because at that age they generally pick it up pretty quickly. If you are in this situation, please try to attend a LTS session (see below),or as many public-skate sessions as you can, prior to the first practice.
Learn To Skate (LTS) -click here for more information on LTS - open to all ages and levels of interest. Students generally skate 1 hour per week - 1/2 hour formal instruction, 1/2 hour to practice what you learned. This class is most appropriate for:
- If you just want to learn to skate and have no interest in hockey. (They teach both figure and hockey skaters.)
- If you are young (3, 4, 5) and want to get basic skating skills before you start hockey.
