A hard hit grounder was hit up the middle and richocheted off of April Walker's leg and into the hole at Shortstop.  Alaina Glenn had to change direction and made a great effort getting to the ball and throwing to first, however the throw was late and the Panthers pushed the runner from 3rd across, winning the game, 4-3.

The Iowa SWAT 12U ladies took their game to the well known and prestigious North Des Moines Memorial Day Matchup Tournament this past weekend.  The Tournament traditionaly attracts teams from all over the Midwest.  This year was no exception, bringing teams in from Minnesota, Nebraska and Illinois to matchup with teams from different parts of of Iowa and here in the Metro for a big field of fourteen 12U teams.  The tournament used a hybrid of traditional bracketing formats, using round robin criteria coupled with seeding on Sunday for Championship play.

SWAT opened pool play Friday and Saturday with a perfect 5-0 record, defeating teams from Minnesota and Nebraska in their pool.  Entering bracket play on Sunday, SWAT was awarded the No. 1 seed in the "A" Bracket.

On Sunday, SWAT played tough and was paced by strong pitching performances from Bryce Holmgren and Haylee LaMasters with good defense and strong hitting from the entire team.  SWAT completed the Tournament with an impressive 8-1 record and took RUNNER UP! in the "A" Bracket.  The Quad Cities Firebirds 96 took the Championship with a perfect 9-0 record.  All-in-all, SWAT had a great weekend, defeating 3 different teams from Minnesota and 1 from Nebraska and getting a quality win over the always tough Cedar Rapids Blue Devils.  The ladies impressively scored a total of 75! runs while only allowing 12, in the nine games they played over the weekend.  GREAT GREAT JOB by all our players.  With that weekend in the book, SWAT 12U pushes its season record to 38-6!  The ladies seem to get better and better as the weekends come up.

This weekend SWAT 12U lands in Adel for the Adel Summer Classic, May 29th-31st.  Hope to see you all there......

2009 East Des Moines Earlybird "A" Bracket Runner Up!
Monday, May 18

Iowa SWAT 12U entered the EDM Earlybird with an extremely tough draw in pool play, facing two traditional powerhouses in Iowa and an opponent out of Minneapolis, MN.  SWAT faced off with the Burnsville Blaze in the opener.  SWAT took a commanding 5-1 lead in the game before staging off a late rally by the Blaze and winning the game 6-5.  Next up was the Ottumwa Diamond Dawgs, a 12U "A" Team.  SWAT and Ottumwa battled to a 2-2 tie in regulation and were forced to International Rules.  In the top half of their turn, SWAT put up 6 runs on the board to go up 8-2.  Ottumwa could only muster up 2 of their own and the game ended with a SWAT victory 8-4.  In the days final game, SWAT took on the WDM Panthers Black.  In a back and forth, low scoring affair, SWAT took the game 3-2 and rounded out their tough day in pool play at an impressive 3-0.

SWAT entered the Championship Bracket as the 4th seed in the "A" Division.  Their first opponent was the very strong Storm Softball out of Ankeny.  SWAT was looking to avenge an earlier loss to Storm in the I-Club Spring Fling.  The game was tight throughout.  The highlight of the game was an over the fence HOMERUN! hit by Haylee LaMasters.  With tough defense the remainder of the way, SWAT pulled out the big victory 5-3!

SWAT moved to a Semi-Final Game against top seeded Carlisle Gold.  In the contest SWAT got out to a commanding lead in the top of the first, 6-0, as the bats were hot and swinging!  SWAT then continued to play well and defeated Carlisle Gold soundly 11-1, putting them into the Championship against the Muscatine Maniacs.

In the final, Muscatine and SWAT battled with alot of sound defense on both halves.  Both pitchers for each team were strong.  It was one of those games where who ever made the first mistake was going to result in the momentum shift the other needed.  After a very hard fought game, Muscatine defeated SWAT, 2-0, in the 7 inning affair.  SWAT could not get the bats going and Muscatine made no errors in the game which helped seal their victory.

All in all it was a very, very good weekend for the Iowa SWAT 12U team and families.  12U got very nice quality wins over some very good opponents.  3 of the 12U players have little sisters on Iowa SWAT's 10U Team.  The l0's did well also, taking the "B" Bracket Championship and bringing home the big trophy!  Great Job by all the ladies!  We are very, very proud of you.

SWAT 12U now moves on the to the huge! Memorial Day Tournament at North Des Moines where there is a 9 game guarantee.  Hope to see you all there.......

IOWA- "Softball with Attitude!"-MISSOURI
Monday, May 11
Iowa SWAT meets Missouri SWAT at USSSA May Madness in Ankeny IA...........

Iowa SWAT thought they were the only "Softball with Attitude" around.  Guess again.  Missouri SWAT, also "Softball with Attitude", brings a pretty mean and exciting brand of softball to the Diamonds as well.  As the May Madness Tournament in Ankeny progressed, both Iowa, and Missouri, SWAT, began to rack up the runs and victories along the way.  As bracket play began on Sunday, Missouri entered as a #1 seed.  Iowa as a #2.

As Missouri SWAT looked on and waited too learn who their opponent would be in the Championship, Iowa SWAT squeaked out a close, hard fought win, in the semi-final against Johnston Gold, 2-1.  Once Iowa reached the final, the unique matchup some were hoping for became reality......Iowa SWAT vs. Missouri SWAT, for all the marbles.

The game began with both pitchers looking strong.  Missouri went up 1-0 after the first, Iowa came back in the second and tied it, 1-1.  Missouri went up 2-1 in the top of the 3rd, Iowa answered in the bottom half, 2-2.  Neither scored in the 4th inning.  Iowa played great defense and held Missouri in the top of the 5th.  Iowa came up for its last at bat in the bottom of the 5th.  Paige Dickel led off with a walk and stole second.  Bryce Holmgren came to bat. On a 2-1 pitch, Bryce hit a hard drive to the right side at the second baseman, moving Dickel to 3rd.  Haylee LaMasters came to bat.  Haylee hits a line drve at the 2nd Baseman, without hesitation, Missouri's 2nd Baseman stabbed the drive and fired to 3rd, picking off Dickel for a double play.  Inning over, regulation over...onto International rules.

Missouri had first turn.  They moved their runner to third on a bunt resulting in the first out.  Bryce Holmgren then struckout the next batter, making two outs.  Next batter hit a hard grounder to Haylee Lamasters at 3rd, who scooped it and fired to 1st for the out.  Iowa holds.  Paige Dickel now has the chance to redeem herself, starting at 2nd base for Iowa's turn.  Kassidy Spurgin drives a grounder to the right side which moves Dickel to 3rd with one out.  Alaina Glenn steps to the plate.  On a 2-1 count, Glenn hits a deep flyball to right field.  Missouri makes the catch, Dickel tags and races home for the winning run, scoring without a play at the plate.  Great Game......Great Teams.....Great fun.

At the conclusion, in great sportsmanship, Missouri SWAT asked to meet with their opponents and take a group photo of both teams.  We obviously agreed.  All the girls accepted their awards together and posed for the pic while exchanging small talk.  A great scene for sure.

Missouri SWAT hails out of St. Joseph's, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City. They are also setup very similar to the program at Iowa SWAT, not connected to a school program and bringing girls together from different locals around the Kansas City Area who love to play softball at a high, competitive level. Who would have thought.

Great Job Missouri SWAT.  Hopefully we'll see you at the World Series in July in KC......
